Michael Carrick as a first-choice player

Why buy Schneiderlin?

Because Fellaini wasn't seen as a defensive midfielder under LVG and Carrick could barely stay fit, leaving us with only one established defensive midfielder, who was also needed to cover at CB/LB if required (low and behold, he was).

Its like saying Conte bought Kante because he doesn't rate Matic.

Are you implying Schneiderlin was brought in to replace Blind? Obviously not the case given LVG rated Blind highly failure to capture Ramos & Jones' early injury in the season forced him to settle at CB.

LVG plays with two holding midfielders, and that's why we bought Schneiderlin. We were very bleak in midfield (only 2 midfielders that can stay fit) and that's why we recruited further.

Carrick, and the team, will only benefit from not being first team regular. Still top class at his best but he is not capable of playing 2-3 times a week regardless of the opponent. Jose will know how to utilize hime in the best way

Care to explain what qualities blind has compared to Carrick?
It seems peoples opinions are jaded due to a DM playing at CB possessing good ball control, touch and basic passing ability from the back as a top class Midfielder. Blind is shite at DM, always has been for us and always will be just as he is for his national team. He's in no way, shape or form of the same calibre or cut from the same cloth. Good solid squad player. Nothing more.
And there's where we can confirm you have no idea what you're talking about.

Replace him as a DM yes, not from the squad as blind a versatile player. The 2 holding midfielders theory didn't come to fruition between the pair, I don't think they ever played together.

As a midfield player who playing at CB his passing is BASIC. Ever remember Carricks passing when he played CB? Do you remember Rio passing during his early days as CB? Too many of you overrate blinds passing like Pirlo he's or something. He's a neat passer of the ball and thats it, fecking hell people act as if he's creating chances every time he plays the ball out the back.

Unfecking beleiveable, are you mistaking Blind for someone else? I'm absolutely baffled how utterly wrong you are, how you could be THAT wrong, what are you watching?

The 2 holding midfielders came into fruition all season - Blind just couldn't be a part of it as he was covering the CB spot.

Fecking hell

He's 1 of the best passers out of defence that I've seen for a long time. You might not rate him as a defender but he consistently passes forward accurately, with good weight and no bobble. He makes it very easy for the forwards to control.

If we put him up for sale I guarantee Barca would have been straight in with a bid, he's that good at it IMO.

Pep would love Blind too. He's no meathead but his eye for a pass, composure, ability to read play gives him massive potential. I have little doubt we can use him ourselves to control the tempo of the game should he be given that screener role that Carrick had for us.

Blind is a lot better as passing than just 'neat'. And he's miles better than Carrick nowadays. Last season he created more chances per game than him even though Blind was a centre back and Carrick a midfielder.

Yeah, if Mourinho decides Smalls and Bailly are his favourite pairing, then having a 433 with Blind at the CDM spot will work nicely.

He's made 16 long passes in the first two matches this season completing only 7 of them. That's less than 50%. Compare that to Bailly who's made 11 long passes and completed 9 of them.

Ah yes long passes, the be all and end all for judging how good a players passing game is :wenger:

Bailly often punts forward. Too much infact (I think its one of the few things he should work on) and he's fortunate to have Ibra's height advantage.

Blind doesn't normally pass long unless its a killer pass through the midfield and behind the opposition's defence. Obviously the conversion rate would be lower in such circumstances.

I also think he'll be good for Barca as a CB, in a possession based system, I'm not doubting that, but I for one do not rate his passing skills as a CB good enough to go into midfield and be able to replace Carrick. That's what I'm saying.

And what is that based from, exactly? He was no worse than any other of our midfielders in his passing game.

This is complete bollocks, he hoofs balls forward giving the ball back to the opposition or even end up nowhere, it's very annoying. Even makes Smalling long balls look good at times. The odd occasion it came off last year was good but still he over does it.

I hope we get to see blind for 1 game in midfield this season just to shut you deluded fan boys up.

Do you enjoy being different or is your judgement that poor?

Stats without corners?

If you're so hamstrung on stats, why don't you compare them to Blinds good luck with that.

You can't can you, it's just one of them things that you say to justify.
It's a joke, we've seen blind at DM/holding and he didn't dictate play, control tempo or cut open defences. Back then we couldn't wait for Carrick to come back and replace him. Now that he's been playing at CB all of sudden his passing abilities have improved and hes now capable of doing all of them things and replacing Carrick and I'm the 1 who deluded.

I agree with much of what you've said. In LvG's first season Blind played more in midfield and he was average at best. He's no where near the ability of Carrick, even in his twilight years, as a CM. I dont think people realise how difficult Carricks role is and what an important player he has been for us over the years, Blind has a long way to go to get to that level.

No, he actually doesn't. Blind hardly ever hoofs the ball - he's the definition of a ball playing CB.

Are you sure you're not talking about Rojo when you describe Blind? Blind is the one with longer hair and Rojo is the one with the combover..

Are you seriously comparing Blinds passing ability to Carricks?

I was actually comparing Blinds to Bailly's. But Carrick is as fair a comparison.

Simply not true. Go back and look at the Bournemouth game - it was almost like having Evans back - 13 up field punts with 5 of them lucky to be tracked down by a United
player. Bailly at least always seems to have a target for his long balls - and 82% completion for long passes is extremely good.

Only caught highlights of the MOTD but if true its uncharacteristic of Blind. He was certainly not playing that way when we played Southampton too.

You can't take one game and claim Blind is a hoofer of a CB.

The hoof talk is ridiculous. Daley Blind is the best passer of the ball in our squad, with Carrick probably second. I have no issue when either plays... people need to actually watch and see the effect they have on the team.

I don't know if Blind is a better passer than Carrick or not. I think that is very objective. But I do know that, when Pogba is playing, Carrick or Blind's passing ability is not that important. Pogba will always be the person to bring the ball up to the opponent half, to start the attack, the engine. It is only when Pogba is not playing, then Carrick or Blind's passing will be crucial to start the offense. It is because there is not other player in the squad who can bring the ball up to the opponent half, no ball carrier. It has to be by Carrick or Blind's passing, or by going to either flanks.

You mean subjective I guess? And yeah it is ultimately. But Blind's weight of pass, vision and technique are what sets him apart for me (and that's not to do Carrick a disservice, I rate him highly too).

He is United's only ball playing CB , and I think you underestimate his passing, both long and short. It's up there with Carrick.

Who else hasn't played yet? Because they must be brilliant as well.
