Watford 3:1 Manchester United

Post-match discussion

That's because our manager doesn't have a specific approach. He is reactive and sets his team to adapt to the situation instead of building a team that plays with a clear style like Klopp, Wenger, Pochettino, Pep or even LvG. So there was never going to be any detectable stamp stylistically at least. I did think however that we'd be more competitive considering his CV and ability to motivate and read the game.
Koeman is another one, he gets his team very well coached in record time. Everton look like a serious outfit now. Jose of old could do this, gets a system sorted and the team wins from day 1, we may not have player calibre of his real madrid side but we have players above and beyond everton and the like

If someone has the nads to drop Rooney it's this manager. Wayne's looking like a pub player now.

I'm confidently predicting he's benched for Leicester.

Slightly worrying that we're crying out for an ageing Carrick.

Question. If things go epically wrong (think worse than Moyes), where do we go if Mourinho got canned?

There is nowhere to go.
Most of us were crying out for a Galactico class manager who knew how to win at the highest level.
Moyes did not have this. And failed.
LVG had this, albeit 15-20 years ago.
Jose has it and won the league 18 months ago.

We need to stick with Jose as there is nowhere else to go.

This is why I hate an international break just THREE weeks into a new season. Kills all momentum within a team.

Referee was poor again, but Utd were playing like a team who didn't know each other.

The only thing I can think of is Rooney must have it in his contract that he starts when fit. It has to be, LVG and Mourinho cannot be this dumb, Mourinho has dropped plenty of better players than Rooney for feck all yet he won't drop him. Has to be a deeper reason.

There needs to be an investigation.
Where is that thread with all the email addresses for United's directors? Think the fans need to start asking questions because it's crazy now. Moyes gave him the go ahead - but LVG and Mourinho are not known for putting up with mediocrity like this - therefore I can only conclude that it is beyond their control.

Need to play full strength side on Wednesday night and make sure they get a win. Very poor mentally today.

Horror show today. The line up looked a mess and it turned out to be.

Sadly i do think rooney needs dropping, but not with 6 other changes.

To get the best out of pogba, well.... i have no idea how we'll do that. Maybe by playing 433 but we don't have the players for that. No quality CM who can cover and control a game.

Martial doesn't look up for it at all and getting battered like he was today isn't going to help him.

The ref was awful for their first goal but we didn't deserve anything but a defeat today.

Seriously when Miki is back, please drop Rooney. We need Herrara or Carrick in midfield to control it. Pogba needs more discipline, I think he is offering nothing much. He can't attack and defend. I hope we start winning soon. This is dire football now.

Pogba and Fellaini aren't playing their positions properly. The loss was as simple as that today.

People who thought this team was gonna compete for the title just like that may get an eye opener. The club has a disease, it has nothing to do with throwing money at it nor changing managers. Something is truly wrong at Man Utd and I have no idea what it is. Maybe this is karma for all those years of success under SAF.....
seems that way don't it....

I agreed with most of the point here but no use.....it's the same every time.Mouhinho do not have the balls to drop Rooney.

Almost scoring goals doesn't win you anything.

Zlatan has already done more than Rooney has done in the last 2 seasons. I have no complaints with Zlatan at all. Rooney is the problem we have.

Even if we agree he's past it in the general gameplay, what about his set piece delivery? We had tonnes of corner kicks today and Rooney kept overhitting it. What exactly does Rooney add to this team?

There are better players in the squad.

It will be Giggs IMO. No other options unless we can get Tuchel which is unlikely.
Maybe Simeone? There's been talk he's looking elsewhere...

Another waste of 45 minutes before we get going. We are giving teams a head start every match.

So, you wanted more time added on?
If Watford had had another 3 minutes, they'd have got 4.
I am thankful the game ended when it did.

If you're asking me personally I want 30 min halves with a stopped clock when the ball goes out of play. In every game. Always.

Football as a spectacle loses so much to gamesmanship. I don't want the right amount of time added on so that we can win a game a football.

I want it to discourage time wasting across the board. It's not linked to the result.

Anyone who thinks Zlatan is a problem is deluded.
I said that he has been missing far to many chances in the last two games not that he is a problem.
Anyone who thinks that his missed chances in the last two games hasn't cost us is deluded.

Get over yourself you blaming Jose for this? Players need to shoulder all this.
Disagree, this is Jose's fault. Absolutely no game plan. We are playing the game in a reactionary manner.Absolutely no initiative, sickening to see us scramble the ball away like so relegation fodder teams. Players were terrible, the loss was their fault. But the way we played, it's down to the manager.

That's because we didn't. People were just imagining things and applying mental gymnastics to make themselves feel better after the disappointments of the past 3 years. Against Bournemouth, we needed a clanger from their captain to open the scoring and vs Southampton, we were sitting off them defending deep with less possession at bloody Old Trafford yet people somehow thought that was indicative of quality.

We looked like we were going to win though. It was like a different mentality. We weren't great against Hull but I knew we'd get that winner, it was like the Fergie days, we were banging on the door and was only a matter of time before we got through. Today felt hopeless though.

We played far better with LVG as manager. Had better understanding of the opposition too and more consistency. I have no idea what it is we are trying to do other than lump and hope. Aweful stuff, embarrassing.

Don't even go there, brutha.
We all know how LVG played and it was terrible. LVG sucked the life out of any joy I had from football. Even winning the FA Cup could not save him - he was that bad.

We need a DM big time.

I'd stick TFM in there and hope for the best. Fellaini was defensively naive today. Also another man hindering our chances is Rooney. I've tried to be patient but he is utterly inept.

The amount of times we gave the ball away easily in midfield was criminal. We looked scattered all over the place in the build up. I never see that kind of display from other top teams. Started looking good and more composed once Mata came in but then the individual brainfart killed us.

Maureen is past his expiry date. Either there was no game plan for the past 3 matches or Jose has been found out.

Yeah, a manager who was a league champion just a year ago is past it... Go back to sleep you babbling feckwit!

I thought the ref had a shocker and we were shit all over the park but for me the problem is Rooney, really poor again today, and until he's gone we won't move on.

Rooney is part of the problem but getting rid of him won't solve anything. It's like we are still playing LVG ball but without the possession. We just look so labored going forward. It shouldn't be like this with Martial and Rashford on the wings. There something with the mentality of this team. Watford, especially Deeny and Ingalo kicked our CBs assess all over the place today with their physical play. Our mids were played off the park. Honestly there is a problem and it's not just other teams being better.

To be honest, Mourinho does have his own approach and adjusts it according to the opposition (like any other manager would). However, compared to the others, he's willing to sacrifice his approach and play a different style if he feels that his approach can't win him the match (see Real Madrid's La-Liga-winning campaign and their victories over Barcelona).

His style involves overloads and combination plays the in wide areas with two quick, tricky dribblers in the wing positions, a target man up front, and a hardworking midfield. His teams often look to punish the opposition by giving them a false sense of security and by keeping his team organised defensively. So far, we've seen the defensive organisation (bar the last few matches), but the rest of Mourinho's approach has been absent ever since he came here. It's as if we're still playing van Gaal football going forward whilst playing Mourinho football defensively. No wonder Mourinho started with Mata: he allows us to overload the wide areas and perform the combination plays that can get our dangerous players into attacking spaces.

Something really is wrong when, going forward, we look really disjointed. This reminds of Chelsea last season who were performing similarly at this stage of the season: sloppy and disjointed going forward but still able to keep the shape at the back (bar some moments when they would concede stupid goals).

I said that he has been missing far to many chances in the last two games not that he is a problem.
Anyone who thinks that his missed chances in the last two games hasn't cost us is deluded.

He's obviously not the problem so give it a rest.

We need a new manager. Who has a plan on what he is doing - who buys players to fit a system. Mourinho has to go - and I know we can't sack a manager after 5 matches in the League - but it would probably be better if we did.

Exactly. The issues were evident from Game 1 but we were winning, so it was alright. Anyone who didn't go with a narrative was killing the buzz with his negativity.

Deserved to lose again. Piss poor performance and seemingly nothing learned from previous failings. Too many square pegs still, too many instances of players not appearing to know what they are doing, and too much casual sloppiness.

We have our record signing Pogba who can't control midfield at all and he must have another world class midfielder alongside him.
He doesn't need a 'world class' midfielder alongside him. He just needs the right type. Someone who can control the team around from a deeper position. Hell, someone like Henderson would be enough. Carrick would be perfect, except we don't know if he has the legs these days (only one way to find out).

Pretty bad interview. He moaned about the officials for the most part. Its like he's learned nothing.
