Watford 3:1 Manchester United

Post-match discussion

Sun, 18 September 2016

I was never excited by the news Jose will be our manager. Simply because I know what happens wherever he has been before.
Look at the pre-match interviews vs City. Mourinho says "hopefuly" we could do so and so, whereas Guardiola says "this is us, that's who we are, that's how we set up". The confidence and belief is on another level.
The only satisfaction that I find in Mourinho's appointment is that he signed Pogba and Bailly.
I trully believe he'll lose the dressing room in the next 12-18 months. Who will replace him? In the perfect world Giggs will take over and do a "Guardiola"/"Enrique"/"Simeone"

This is Dortmund from Yesterday. Can anyone imagine any of our players threading a ball like that? They knew what to do and did it patiently from the moment Kagawa released the ball. It's just so effective and well-executed.

There is no Kagawa. It was Ginter,Raphael,Dembele,Schmelzer,(Rapha+a Darmstadtplayer), Pulisic.

I find it hard to absolve Mourinho of blame. He's decided to go into the season with Fellaini as his main CM. He's decided to stick with Wayne Rooney as world's most rubbish main man. And he decided to add two players to a bang average attack and seemingly proceeded to so far get nothing out of one of them. He also didn't sign a right back when it's been an area of weakness.

It's time to batten down the hatches and start grinding out some 1-nil's. No more of this monkey business.
no thank you!
i want to watch good football, the idea that the only way we can win games with the incredible squad we have is to "batten down the hatches' is mental!

It is possible to play a holding midfielder, a balanced team and play attacking football..... a good manager should easily be able to do that with this squad.

Mourinho seems to be picking very attacking line ups.

Maybe he is trying to prove he can play the "united way" but I'd rather see the team setup in a balanced way first! (especially away from Old Trafford) then worry about flair and attacking later.

What I take from this match is:

- Rooney can no longer play at the required level (this has been apparent for a couple of seasons, and really emphasized again today)
- Fellaini and Pogba as a 2 can only work in the easier home games. Mourinho has to show adaptability and switch to a 4-3-3.
- Our players are much better than the level they have shown in the last 3 games. Mourinho has to get them disciplined and fired up.

Never saw that result coming - believed we would hammer watford. Again the referee/linesman at fault for the first goal. Then we draw level and somehow watford score to take the lead.

Thought we could draw then go onto win.

Still believe we going to have a damn good season, the players need to be stand up and be counted. Thought fellaini and pogba we good in midfield.

Sub par performance hangover from the feyenoord game

They're not imbalanced line ups than attacking ones. He needs to play both Pogba and Rooney so we end up with barely any quality in deeper areas. Then for some reason he puts martial on the right where he's never ever played well for us.

That was truly awful. No cohesion and seemingly no plan going forward, struggling to create chances against a Watford side we really should be beating. They deserved to win today, our players didn't look arsed apart from Rashford, Rooney was atrocious and needs to be kicked to the kerb. Though it won't happen. Why do we consistently start games so sluggishly? As long as this problem persists I feel we will struggle. Jose needs to sort it out.

My early season optimism has completely evaporated, and it's looking grim at the moment for sure.

Massive improvement and/or changes required because this, 3 consecutive defeats early in the season, is not fecking good enough.

At 1-1 with a lot of time left I thought we'd dominate and get the 3 pts. But we didn't take over the game at all and after their 2nd we looked fecked.
Crap performance overall. So disappointed!

I feel Herrera is kept out because Mou is aware how many goals we conceded from set pieces last year - Fellaini is tall, that s about it

But we have Ibra, Bailly, Smalling, Pogba and Martial who are not short in any way. Why do we also need Fellaini? Isn't that quite stupid.

The simple analysis is United were playing as individuals with a team.

When I really thought that we needed to win big. We came up with an abject performance. It's still only 5 games into the season, but my excitement for the months ahead already seems to be wavering. We are in for a tough month!

I think he made the changes midweek, Ander got his chance because of that 2nd half performance against City and didn't do much wrong in the EL game either. However he was always going to change it back again. If we had won he might have had 2nd thoughts, but we didn't. So back came Rooney and Fellaini. Morgan and Rojo got dumped altogether. Darmian has disappeared. After todays result god only knows what he will be thinking. Rooney has let him down big time. Fellaini was involved in two of their goals. Smalling and Bailly were not great. He is now lauding Ashley Young.:wenger: I have no idea what he will do next. I hope he knows.

Rooney, Fellaini, Valencia, Young need to go.

We play without a no 6 - the only one we have is Schneiderlin who seems to be out of his depth at a big club.

We play without a genuine right back who hasn't even got one trick any more.

We don't have a world class CB.

We have no really creative quick thinking players, except Pogba, but he's has to play with the useless Fellaini as the two anchor men in midfield. Mata is too slow and then we have two aging forwards.

Rashford is the only light at the moment.

I mean specifically Fellaini as they play in the same position. I agree, we have enough strong aerial players but I think Mou is over cautious in that regard.

Regardless, point still stands.

That's what happens when you have an organizational philosophy and appropriate oversight at the management level to make sure you select the right players for your system regardless of who the coach happens to be.

It's not really a fair comparison just because of how United operate as a club compared to those types of teams.

Yeah because playing open, expansive football has worked wonders for United this season. You gotta get results and pick up points to get some confidence back and not take yourself out of the title race before Halloween. Wake up.

At 1-1, we had a big chance. But we blew it and it shows once more that we're far away. Where was the pressing? The pushing on? Why did we not start dominating midfield with another player? It would have been key once more! If we do not get a working system soon, the title race will be over soon for us

We have a big big problem. Whatever we do it isn't working.
Jose should have the balls to drop Rooney at least.
It's not the only but it's the biggest problem.

I've lost all optimism. It looks grim.

It looked like LVG time. We equalized and then instead of winning we threw it away.
But everything was fine a couple of days ago and you were making sarcastic hardcore red jokes whenever people uttered the same in the matchday threads?

The players on the pitch at that time were not the pressing sort. Most are either too old or too slow or too lazy.

Title race? What title race?

I'm not 1 to overreact at results this early in the season, but this loss has broke and killed all of my faith/optimism for this season.

After 2 straight losses and some self doubt creeping in, the club wilted yet again. It's happened so many times since Fergie left, that it's become contagious. When we equalized, I said if we win, it'd be a huge boost. To come back after trailing 1-0 away from home and win after 2 straight losses would have showed great resilience and character. Instead, we went on and lost the game in similar fashion like under Moyes and LVG. I don't even know anymore.

I look at the team and though there's definitely faults and weaknesses, I just wonder how they can't play better. It makes you think if we even do any training on attacking. The players look utterly clueless when we attack. Just a terrible loss.

we weren't playing expansive football today, we didnt play it against city.... what we did was put out unbalanced sides with loads of players that don compliment each other.

you can play good attacking football and not leave a big gaping hole in front of the defence, its about picking a team that works, not about battening down the hatches.

what kind of attitude is that for a team that wants to compete for the league.....

We got robbed against City, after that players probably lost confidence. Since we can't offload our team and manager every few weeks, maybe this would be a good moment to evaluate everyone else involved. At the very least, sack everyone who favored giving Rooney that ridiculous contract.

What the hell are you on about?

Oh I'll tell you what &I'm on about. Just a couple of your sarcastic "rocking on my fugly toy horse looking down on you fair weather fan posts from my huge fat nose" quotes in the feyenoord matchday thread:

So much moaning:lol:

We are the worst team in the world right now. Anyone agrees with me?

Jose will be under pressure in no time from ex players, pundits and the media if he isn't getting results, because the ugly football is nkt helping.

Your cool and collected dwarf knight on fat pony response then:
Yes this has been going for too long now.

Come on guys, it's a process. :D:wenger:

After the feyenoord game in the Rooney thread:
Well well. Turns out he isn't the problem.

Some more rooney sarcasm in the matchday thread:

Rooney is killing our play!!

Oh wait.

Three days later:

Get Herrera in instead of Rooney.

Elephant in the room is still Rooney and the fact Jose doesn't want to get him off.

Sure it isn't the only problem but it's a big one.

Best part is we had our chances but are completely clueless in front of goal.
What's happening with our confidece.

Problem is I don't see Jose making a sub until 70th or so minute.

Rooney looks like he just started playing football.

Simple pass, he can't make a fu.king simple pass!!!!

Even I can make those and I'm horrible at football!!!!

Same.

I'm fully expecting a season similar to the last 3 , losing every 2 or 3 games. Battling for top 4.

This.

He needs to grow up and focus more on his game rather than his persona. We spent a lot of money on him and he needs to fecking deliver.

Tbf wat happened was you gave a lot of money to Juventus Turin, and they delivered. What you make out of that is your own thing.

Wow. I really have touched a nerve with one my response to your cool and great post the other day.
I promise I won't reply you anymore, it seems it really bothers you.
If anything you wont use that fat dwarf thing. Its really cringeworthy. And shite.

I still think it's too early to judge Mourinho, one post was a joke and Rooney is the problem, thought that in midweek too, it's just that it's obvious he isn't the only problem.
But who are you for me to justify to you.

This was just my nice way of saying to get off my case or piss of to be exact.

It must be time for Carrick to come back into the team. At least he will play forward passes. Hopefully to Pogba who'd be further up the pitch were he should be. Maybe Blind could do it but I'd rather see Carrick there with his composure and ability to control a game from deep. Also Blind and Smalling is a better CB partnership than Smaling/Bailly or Bailly/Blind.
