Castles: Man Utd reeling as key defender Eric Bailly is set to be out injured for more than a month

Thanks, Howard Dunc.

Seasons over ladies and gentlemen. In all seriousness Bailly has been brilliant so far to already have a lot of us (myself included) flapping at the idea of him being out for an extended period.

He will be a big big miss, the only upside might possibly be (for us) is that he won't go to the AFCON.

Why always us? :(

we have the English Baresi and the new Duncan Edwards

Could have been worse but it is badly timed given how our other defenders have shown they cant be trusted.

is 6 weeks really all there is to it.. that would be brilliant if true.

Judging from some of the responses on the other thread, I was thinking he needed a below-waist amputation. People were writing his career off and everything.

If it's as really as short as suggested here this is actually okay news. I was expecting much worse damage and a much longer lay-off, with him potentially coming back not the same player.

I love Bailly and he's our best defender this season, but we should be able to get by a month or so with last season's defence.

FFS, I went to bed in tears yesterday over the other thread that was made

6 months, career over, never be the same again.

More likely to be 6 weeks.

Puh. I feared the worst.

6 weeks:

City (H)
Burnley (H)
Fener (A)
Swansea (A)
Arsenal (H)
Feyenoord (H)
West Ham (H)

Realistic target date December 4th, which is Everton (A).

We really should be fine over that fixture set.

He's also going to the Copa Africa in January which means that we should already have a back up plan ready. Anyway, if Smalling can't be trusted to lead the defense after 7 years at the club and we have to cross fingers so that a young CB in his first season in England doesn't get injured throughout the season, then we more fecked than we think. It's all nice and well when we laugh at the latest brainfart from Stones but we should also keep the "best defender in the league" tag for someone who actually deserves it.

When you say "we should be fine" , you don't really think that do you? :wenger:

We should be fine, but the reality is likely to be different. At present, no game is a given.

We've lost to Watford and drawn at home to Stoke.

Losing our most consistent defender at this moment in time, is not helpful.

Put him on a diet of jollof rice, fufu with chicken soup, yams & spinach stew, banku with grilled tilapia & pepper and he'll be back within a month.

We should've signed another centre half in the summer, Smalling's form has been very patchy, Blind bottles it in the big games and Rojo looks more of a left back (even though he's useless there too)

Have faith! We'll win our next 4 PL fixtures!

Yes agreed with this, this is relatively good news given its an ACL injury. Not sure what the negativity is all about in here!

I will take 6 weeks after the experts all over social media told us yesterday that it can be anywhere between 6 months to career-end.

If it's 6 weeks then that's better than I thought last night. Just four league games due to another wearisome International break.

Great news, considering 6 months was mooted last night.

Massive miss, Smalling is a clown but I'd rather him than Jones or Rojo partner Blind.

After watching our defence without Bailly yesterday i'd rather play any 2 of TFM, Axel or RoShaun at CB.

If he comes back by the New Year then I'll be hugely relieved to be honest. So if its a month or 2, then its great news.

"Though Mourinho asked his new employers to sign both an experienced central defender and an additional full back in the summer window – with Southampton's Jose Fonte and AS Monaco's versatile Brazil international targets – United's failure to shift surplus personnel prevented either move from going through."
Think this is true? Castles was sure we were going to sign these two and his last article slyly suggested he hadn't been backed on some transfers and been told to use kids instead. So maybe he didn't get Fonte due to having Tuanzebe and being unable to offload Rojo and Darmian? Either way our CB pair is a concern as it lacks a leader and consistency, as well as depth. Our full back options don't look great either. I dread to think what position we will end up if we have our usual injury crisis.

Better than we feared. I must say, I did worry that he might pick up an injury given how he plays, raw and fearless. Vida was fearless but he chose the right moments. This is also the case with Jones, but Bailly has more power and pace so it's not unlikely that he'll suffer impact injuries in his career. Upside for him is that he's extremely physically strong so he may recover quicker from injuries than, say, Jones.

This really isn't confirmed yet? Duncan eight ball knows nothing. Initial report and full examinations are very different things. Has anybody seen anything else confirming his injury timescale?
