It was before the City game.
Jose seemed to pick his starting 11 for the season against Everton which Mhiki never featured. He only got 2 minutes coming on for Mata at the Charity Shield. If we wanted to introduce him to the league then two friendlies against premiership opposition was the perfect time. Numerous reports came out about how Jose had been impressed with Lingard, which is fair enough. But even when Jesse got injured in the Community Shield, we replaced him with a different type of player in Mata.
It’s a strange one as on paper (I haven’t seen hardly anything of him) he’s a perfect Jose player. Also, when Jose knew he had the job he was seen at numerous Dortmund games. Clearly scouting the lad live and no doubt knew all about him.
I have read numerous accounts (not sure how accurate they are) that Mhiki is a sensitive soul and a bit of an introvert. I think this might be Jose’s issue with him. Jose seems to like the brash, confident, big personality who’d speak up. Zlatan and Pogba certainly fit that bill, as it appears so does Bailly. He had a squad full of these players at Inter with Zlatan, Etoo, Snjeider, Lucio, Samual, Anautovic, Ballotelli. His Chelsea squad with Terry, Drogba, Robben, Cole etc where all big personalities and obviously the Madrid squad was full of them.
I think Jose gets the best out of his players by having the whole squad constantly on competitive edge, which is why it can go wrong for him by pushing these types of players to their limits. Clearly some thrive off it. If a player is of a more timid nature I can see how Jose’s forthrightness might send him deeper into his shell.
The size of United wont help. Berbatov, another supremely talented footballer but a bit of a sensitive lad never really got to terms which the size and expectation at United.
Just an alternative take on the matter……….
