Serious Thread: The Liverpool Situation

That's the worst line-up you've put out in the league this year from what I've seen.

pretty much. Johnson on the left too.

Let's tack it to a 'giving everyone a fair crack of the whip (except konchesky)' signal from the new manager and hope to never see Jovanic and Poulsen in the starting lineup again.

Haha, what are the odds on Konchesky leaving in Jan?!

Moreover, their current squad lack pace, players that can ake on players and goalscorers.

How many players with genuine pace? Johnson, Torres, Babel, Ngog?

Who can take players on? Torres, Babel, Cole and Gerrard?

And who can you expect goals from? Gerrard and Torres?

Which makes me wonder why people always forget Benayoun leaving. He is no Pele, but he was incredibly effective for them.

He wanted to leave for a start but he was fairly inconsistent for the most part with the exception of a 3-4 month spell at the of the 08/09 season when he was consistently very good for us.

Of course tactics have been a problem. That's why we just sacked the manager.

Really hope Kenny comes up with something better than a midfield pack of Meireless, Poulsen and Lucas with donkeys like Jovanovic and Kuyt supporting Torres on the wing for Everton. Don't know what the feck he was thinking with that lineup.

I remember the last lineup he ever put out when he was manager first time round, he had something like 7 defenders in the team, with some of them out of position. Its why i'd be wary of thinking KD is going to be the saviour if i was a Liverpool fan. He may steady the ship (thats debatable too imho, as much about the squad as him though) but there is no magic wand.

if your turd is stale, its stale. The only thing you can do is eat nicer fresh ingredients and do a fresh turd

he's like Park, you dont know what you're missing till its gone

Not sure Benayoun of all people is the missing ingredient. Cole can do something similar. I'm happy enough with him over Benayoun.

As I say about Yossi; good player on his day just a mite inconsistent.

the first thing Liverpool need to do it sort out their youth system

gerrard, carragher, kelly and spearing are the only home grown players who get a game? (correct me if i'm wrong)

at united.....rafael, fabio, o shea, evans, brown, neville, scholes, giggs, gibson, fletcher, cleverly, welbeck, macheda (with some other promising youngsters on the fringes)

when you are able to bring players in when they are young and develop them the way you want you only need to have the odd splurge for top talent

Liverpool's squad does need a lot of development but that should happen primarlily from within

Benitez overhauled the academy and he left it in good shape. Especially given the shambles he inherited from Houllier.

Fabio and Rafael homegrown? That's pushing the definition, buckoo!

Constructive!

I'm guessing you don't agree. TR?

You think Benitez left the academy in a worse state than he found it?

I'm guessing you know very little about Liverpool's academy!

Yeh I dont know the intradicate details of exactly what what he has done with your academy.

I guess time will tell on what work he has done with the academy, but not much has happened in the last few years has it?

The Academy was/is run separately to Melwood to the point there was friction between them. Benitez, being a control freak, wanted control so sacked Steve Heighway among others and brought in his own people. The guy Borrell who oversaw Barcelona's academy for a few years is now in charge and recruitment is now a lot better. As is coaching staff. As is the communication between the Academy and Melwood.

It bears no comparison to what he found. There are plenty of reasons for you lot to criticise Benitez over but what he did to the Academy isn't one of them.

I take my :wenger: back then!

Should never have sacked him by the sounds of it ;)

I dunno about that. When there is someone like Hodgson ready to take over, Benitez never stood a chance...

Hiring the right people - aside of the manager obviously - is a big part of running a successful operation. I imagine Utd get that right time after time.

Liverpool, however..

Didn't Liverpool win the FA Youth Cup in Benitez' first 2 seasons at Anfield?

The Academy can't have been in too bad a shape then?????

Won it in '06 and '07.

But Benitez has said it was in bad shape, and what Benitez says is gospel for the red side at Merseyside.

the current U-18 is supposed to be the best we've had in donkey years.

We'll see how it turns out.

I think an academy is judged by what it produces not what it wins. That's my view anyway.

So given that the current academy hasn't really produced anything yet why would you boldly claim that its significantly stronger?

how long will Gerrard, Torres and Reina continue to stay with this shower of shite.

The problem with Gerrard and Torres is that apart from City, I can't see any other clubs paying what Liverpool would want for them, due to Gerrard's age and the fact that Torres is made of glass.

Just telling you how it is.

Trust me, it's in far better shape. Or don't trust me.

I am not bothered either way.

Benitez bought about 10-15 young players didnt he - none of them have made an impact have they???

Fabio and rafael have been at united since they were 15/16 - they were and are far from the finished article so i would consider them homegrown

Fabio and Rafael came to United when they were 18.

I really want to trust you Sam.

But you're wrong so often I'm really not sure what to think ;)

was Kelly an academy player Sam?

thought he was good against us.

He has come through the system and been at the club for years. Think he'll be an excellent player. Maybe in the centre of defence which is where he has played most of his football till now.

Is he still dizzy from having Giggs running rings round him?

He's just taken Giggs out of his pocket and dropped him off at Carrington.

he was not That good Sam....;)

Giggs was amazing that day.....

always good to invest in youth.

In the end though it is always....the manager.

...That is my Only fear for us. When the great man waves goodbye...

I don't care if we do end up getting Maurinho.....

Old Trafford will shake when Ferguson leaves...

The manager and some £££ of course!

Definitely agree re youth. Our youth development over the past 10 years has been abysmal.

I think last summer and this January have really spelt out how bleak a situation at Liverpool.

They are a massive club and have a very good manager in place now...but I just can't see them sitting at the top table in English football for a long, long time. They are probably further away from winning a league title now than any time in my life. The problem doesn't lie with teh club mentality or anything like that, it's just very simple; they don't have the money.

Last summer and January prove this. While City, United, Chelsea can go and splunk 100million every summer and offer the 200a-week+ wages, Liverpool simply can not. The money coming into the game via Roman and the Sheik have hurt Liverpool more than any club. It puts them from being an unlucky club in an unfortunate position having not won a title in years to a club who are now really out of the running over the next few years at least, probably more. They needed to put a good squad together in the summer, couldn't afford it. Clearly needed additions this January, couldn't splash out.

Massive problem for them. With the new 'stand' built at Anfield, it seems as if FSG are reluctant to go into their pockets. I genuinely see bleak times ahead for them. I think December just gone will be their highest point for quite possibly the next decade. I say that without any boas against them...they are clearly a great club with rich history, unfortunately for their fans, they don't have a rich owner and their future looks very mid-table-ish to me..
