Southampton 2:3 Manchester United

Post-match discussion

How come on our own fan board when we just scored 3 goals against a team, we got lucky, got outplayed etc. and yet had we conceded 3, regardless of the performance, the fans would've torn into the team? Some of you guys are weirdos.

As shitty as we were it was a great game to watch, very entertaining. Cup Finals can be crap but that was a good advert for English football, credit to Southampton.

He has the 1,000 yard stare going. He's relieved, but he expected to win at any cost. The comment of "I put so much pressure on myself..." shows that he's still hurt from his Chelsea fallout and wants to win the League and eventually Champions League with Manchester United. He understands the club now and the expectation or standard set before him. He's one of us now. He knows the shortcomings of the squad, it played out before him a bit today. His mind is churning and he's trying to keep himself emotionally and mentally in check. Something is driving him deep inside and it's fascinating.

I think he saw alright how we were letting them rip through us in MF in the first half. Moved Pogba into the ten then.

Congratulations Utd fans. Hope you're all a little more tired for it. :P

Whow. A win and thats all that will count as far as the record books will show. But what a fortunate win. The best team on the day lost. A reverse of the 2005 cup final when we were beaten by Arsenal having played them off the park. Mind you thats football.

No one said life was fair.

Yep, bump the Everton / West Ham / Stoke etc match threads and see the double standards.
It's unbelievable. We've just won a cup against a side who had two weeks preperation and were expected to outrun us today.
Sometimes every United game isn't all about us. Not every point is a negative or positive in our logbook.
Well done Southampton.

I love that Wazza got trolled like that and Southampton too.

How and why are people using this as an opportunity to bash Rooney?

Anyway, get the feck in. Southampton made it a great final. We weren't at our best but it's nice to know we can afford to be off the pace and still come out on top again. Important win.

GET IN THERE. Massive relief, Southampton were the much better team for 90mins and it should've gone into extra-time. I felt a bit bad for them, but sod it - the most important thing is another trophy even when we're supposedly in the wilderness, a huge confidence boost for the rest of the season.

Zlatan, words don't do him justice. Two screamers when we needed him the most, a true game-changer.

We showed some fight when it mattered, but now to the griping...

1) Our back 4 were effing abysmal and should be ashamed of themselves. Bailly could well be dropped for a bit, terrible. Rojo, possibly worse, he cannot play LB for us ever again.

2) We looked 10yrds slower than them, to a man, it was like they were playing with 12-13 outfield players. Our inability to keep the ball was surreal.

But, awful performance aside, 3 awesome goals and a trophy, and at least a display of guts and resilience against a really 'up for it' and brave underdog.

Final note - Gabbiadini is well worth a look for any big side seeking a 'fox in the box' type striker.

Redmond and Bertrand were impressive and you can see what two weeks can do for you with respect to preparation and studying your opponent. Carrick occupied their most forward central mid player, similar to how Carrick was subbed against Liverpool because Lallana I believe rendered Carrick irrelevant.

Pogba and Herrera had to equally press the ball and/or stay behind one another. Their partnership was too narrow because they were already a man short in the midfield and then when Soton's striker made runs, Redmond was positioned in the left channel with space to run into. Valencia was pinned back for most of the match. Bertrand was so high up the pitch at times.

Zlatan, you hero!

We were really lucky to win that, Southampton were fantastic but he was the difference in the end.

Finals are all about getting over the line and now we've got that first taste of silverware under Jose, there will hopefully be more to come!

We scored 3 goals with that performance. Amazing!!
Only if we had just a bit this luck in all those 20-30 attempts and 0 goals games.

But yay, trophy nonetheless.

Fantastic win in what was a poor overall performance, especially in the first half. However, we have played well in most games this season but haven't got the results so it's good to see our fortunes change. Definitely looked tired most of the game so relieved the game didn't go to extra time as we probably would have lost. This team has great character which is a true reflection on the manager and the personnel he bought over the summer. Zlatan: superb. Think Bailly and Rojo had very poor games. We need more composure when clearing the ball when under pressure. With a weeks rest I hope the players recharge because there's plenty more to come from this season. :)

Was it out of anger?

He was nowhere near that bad. He actually made a lot of important interceptions and clearances that went unnoticed apparently

Although I agree he had some very bad moments
Besides a goal assist, mind you.

Lots of bones to pick over. Another day. Today, we won the first silverware of the season and in cup finals, it's getting over the line that counts. I don't give a flying feck if Southampton were the better side today. I doubt their fans care that we were the better team on 1 May 1976. We won a final against a team fully rested and prepared. Good enough.

I'll never forget this final for a few reasons.

Zlatans performance
Zlatans late winner
Scaring my 3 year old daughter to death after the Zlatan goal then her joining in with the celebration and running around the room with me despite not having a scooby about what was going.

For all the Oppo fans and others who have snide digs at this Trophy you need to realise that it's not the trophy it's the mentality.

Think about it for a second... 2 of the biggest winners in the History of world football continually and in somewhat of an annoyed tone mention the Charity shield by way of correction each time the press ask them about their first trophy potentially being the league cup. The charity shield ffs!!

This is the difference between the all time greats and the winners and between the winners and the losers

Finals are meant to be won and we did. It's even important that we struggled, it could strengthen the mental of the younger players.

He isn't world class, but he's a player that you need to win titles and trophies. Tactically, he's very flexible and he's put in a lot of minutes. The balance isn't quite right when it's him and Pogba and leaves the team a bit open, however they can camp inside together like they did against Leicester I believe, but doing that restricts them going forward.

It'll be interesting to see how the midfield evolves.
Feel we are singing of the same hymn sheet ha
Just a little disappointed in his performance today I guess, definitely could do with a another body because the drop in quality from those two down to fellaini is worrying

Did anyone else notice Zlatan was completely goosed after the match, looked like people where holding him up

Delighted with the win and, not for the first time recently, the level of fight the players show when required.

I expected a hard game given the difference in time off for the 2 teams recently. But we held our nerve well under a load of pressure.

Loving Zlatan!

Ive been saying all season that we had yet to win a game we didn't deserve to. Today was the day!

In a season when we have been so wasteful, what a day to pick to be clinical.

I thought Herrera was exceptional today.

Yep, I was cursing him for kicking the ball long and conceding possession just before the Saints grabbed one back.

But to his credit, he setup the winner and did well to maintain his discipline having picked up an early yellow.

I thought Herrera was exceptional today.

Valencia should learn from him that one does not need to wait & run the ball to the byeline before making a cross. If that was Valencia, he would have waited till he's closed down before whacking the cross on the marker's shin to win a corner kick. The amount of times we have had the ball in that position and did nothing with it all season is laughable.

It's always sweeter when you win a final in the dying minutes of the game. The good thing about today is that we can chalk this one off and focus on our other targets now. If Jose had adopted the mentality of some of the numpties on here worrying about that fecking 4th spot and questioning why players are being played etc., we would never have got this moment today.

I just think it's great that he approaches each competition with the same importance, not like fecking Liverpool, City, Leeds etc., who could well end up with nothing to show for their season. How anyone can not appreciate that it's the trophies that matter and that's what breeds confidence and makes our club's history is baffling. Once again Jose's written himself in the record books already. That should shut a few haters up today.

We looked dead and buried at times but managed to pull it out the bag, reminiscent of the '99 season. I'm so happy, it's untrue! :D
