Champions League Round of 16 (14th Feb - 15th Mar)

I woke up in the morning and checked the score it showed Bayern won 5-1 and Real Madrid won 3-1. I was wondering for a moment why Google is showing me last matchday results.

To be fair, Arsenal delivered a solid performance in the first half and with a bit of luck they could have at least end the game with a draw. However, I also think that Bayern did no more than what is absolutely necessary and getting humiliated AGAIN and falling completely apart is just embarrassing. 10-2 on aggregate..

Arsenal being their usual mentally fragile losers in the CL aside, watching that Bayern team made me realize once more how far the English clubs are from what it takes to be truly competitive in Europe. Can't think of one PL club that would be able to create problems for the Germans.

Will UEFA take action against Wenger for his comments on the referee?

Goodness me! Now that you mentioned this, I just realized this was the exact same set of results from the first leg.

Cheers for posting these :)

How can people claim that this is a penalty but then complain about the red for Koscielny? Wenger's post match comments about the ref are pure denial of the real problems in my opinion.

Barca - PSG should be a good game even though PSG lead by 4-0. If there is one team that can overturn the deficit it's Barca. Hopefully it's either a close game or one more embarrassment to Barca. No more just 1-0 or 2-0 home wins.

A few years ago maybe Barca could have done it but I'd be surprised now, I doubt they'll keep a clean sheet.

No, if there is one team that can overturn big deficits is real madrid. Barca were never known for big comebacks

I meant with the attacking power they have.

Any recent examples of Madrid overturning big deficits? Don't ask me the same question, I meant with the attacking players they have and not by history.

Unless Barca signed a midfielder since the first leg then there's no way Barca come close. They won't even win outright tonight.
PSG have no reason not to target their midfield or change their approach at all.
This could be an end of an era match, a game that people look back on and say that's when the elite Barca run came to an end

As @Donaldo said, there were signs as early as the AC Milan game in 11/12(?) that Ox could become a top CM. He's looked brilliant there every game this year.
Top bins, this man, for remembering my insightful comments. A sliver of light in a dark dark season.

Or when PSG start their European dominance. I agree though, I think Barca will go through the motions a little after the first half hour. PSG will most likely score and the game will become a non event.

Would not surprise me if they score 3 or 4 but I doubt they can keep a clean sheet.

of course he is in denial. Wenger often blames the ref for his own shortcomings. What I find remarkable is the media reaction to Wenger. We hear the same criticism now regarding tactics, mentality and transfers every year, yet they treat him like of demi-god. Even pundits like Rio are scared to call him out. How can anyone think that Wenger will turn it around, when he is repeating the same mistakes for the last 10 years?
I am baffled by the patience of many Arsenal fans. Fan of almost every other club would run riot. Wenger would deserve to get booed at for 90 minutes each game until he changes or leaves.

It was a joke, and it's got to do with the clubs history. Geez

City could. Chelsea will.

what's the difference between 'fam' and 'blood'? why would you use both if they mean the same thing, as the way he speaks it sounds like they mean the same thing.

I just remembered PSG won 4-0 in the first leg. Let's see what Barcelona does.

Just seen the highlights, feel for Arsenal - Lewandowski looks offside, not to mention the fact that it also looked a proper dive as well. Moreover, the red rather than yellow was ridiculous - effectively killing the match/tie

Walcott had a better shout for a penalty in the 1st half, IMHO, from Alonso

The funny thing is that over the course of the tie Arsenal have had moments where they have looked the better side. I was impressed with their first half display yesterday and also in Munich where they played well for almost an hour. With 11 men they may well have gotten a face saving moral win like they often do in the CL.

Denying a clear goal scoring chance without making an attempt to win the ball - that's a textbook red.
Alonso on the other hand played the ball.

Without the ref, they might have gotten a moral victory that nobody should care about. They got destroyed when it mattered and Bayern was a bit too relaxed in the second leg (who could blame them with a 4 goal lead?). Wenger just tries to deflect blame.

Learn the rules

Seen loads of debate on this this season. I thought that the new ruling was that it shouldn't be a penalty and a red at the same time, even if it's denying a clear goalscoring opportunity. Only circumstance is if it's violent conduct in the area. Hence why the incident in question should have been a yellow. Anyone clear on this?

Barca are dead but zombies are stuff for exciting nights so we will see what happens... as for Dortmund-Benfica the former can surely win any football game by 2 goals margin on their nights but Benfica are no mugs.

People said this after the Bayern tie from from 2012-13 and 2 years later Barca made another treble. Certainly not the end of an elite Barca side considering that even this season they can win 2/3 of the big titles they are fighting for.

Wrong.

"Denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity in the penalty area is no longer a straight red card - unless the offence is holding, pulling or pushing; there's no attempt to play or no possibility of making a challenge; or it's an offence which is punishable by a red card, no matter where on the pitch it happens - violent conduct, for example."

Fair play. I haven't seen the exact "letter of the law" ruling. I guess in this case it's deemed a push and therefore a red.

but they were able to sqeeze Xavi / Iniesta / Alves for one last run, they're either gone or fell off and their replacements are levels below what they were.
They're in the same boat as the rest of us over the last 10 years... How do we get players of that quality?

They don't have to be of the same quality, because you don't compete with that team, but with teams from the present. You don't have Xavi and Alves anymore, but neither do the other teams.
