I don't think it's all the success that's went to his head. He was always just very stubborn in his ways and in his ethos of how one should approach a game of football. He's definitely a great manager but his ability to adapt is a major major flaw.

Pep needs at least two new fullbacks in the summer. Considering how he likes to use them he must be banging his head against the wall at the poor quality options he has.

I think Conte would be fine. Didn't Ancelotti win the double with Chelsea when we still had SAF? Although he would only last a season or two. Mourinho is the only manager who could stand toe to toe with SAF.

In any case if his interviews were played on radio without introduction I wouldn't know it's him. That's how under the radar he's been and I think that has helped him ease into English football.

It would be funny if they end up finishing 5th and get knocked out of the FA Cup by Arsenal, so technically they have performed worse than last season.

Managers can't do the thinking for the players out on the pitch. Of course they can influence and prepare the mindsets before but beyond the white line it's down to the players. Those two have won more away KO games in their last 6/7 than Pep has in his last 12. It's not an arbitrary stat IMO, it shows his tactical naivety away from home in the CL.
Ferguson's on record (somewhere?) as saying retaining titles was his hardest task as a manager, as there's naturally a dip in drive and motivation after the first, that needs to be aggressively re-instilled. It's certainly no fluke that him and Jose are the only ones to pull it off in the PL era, and it remains one of the biggest black marks against Wenger as a truly great manager.
That Fergie did it with three different teams is even more impressive, but also partly why he endured. He famously sold three of the biggest stars of his first side in order to bring through the hungrier fledglings of his second, after all. And his third only took shape after he'd kicked out two of the biggest icons of the previous era (Becks and RVN)
As you say, ruthlessness is the key. It's like boxing. You can't impose yourself as a serious force simply just by winning titles. You have to defend them too. City have been 8 & 11pts off the pace in both their seasons as defending champions.

Pep is stubborn. At least not too stubborn to have kept with Bravo and putting in Willy. But Willy strangely enough who most opposition fans wanted to see in the team ahead of Joe Hart cos Hart was better.

The one question about pep, who is meant to be the world class manager, but who has he actually improved? I dont think Stones, who is his signing, has improved under him. But forgetting new signings, who from the previous regime has improved under his management? Sterling maybe?

GK, LB, RB, CB (maybe2), CM, and probably a striker. So thats about 7 signings with probably 5 being for the first team. Thats mad.

Champions league knockout, away second leg with a two goal advantage and the best manager in the world (my arse) comes out with a midfield consisting of one holder and two playmakers that couldn't defend a CAF all star Sunday league team. All hail Pep the genius
Despite millions spent (no one in the media seems to mention just how much they spent this summer, strange that) they are no better than last season with the ultra super dopper manager Pep. He's unwillingness to seemingly adapt his playing mentality on a game to game basis, something Jose does very well, is what will continue to cost City.
Also, it may be just me, but Peps football doesn't seem to be much different to Pellegrini's at least atheistically speaking.
Special mention to Owen Hagreaves' comment when he first saw City drew Monaco.

Putting red tinted glasses aside and can be said about José. Both have spent a ton of money and have underperformed so far however you want to look at it. If José needs time, so does Pep. It looks like we are making progress but we are not out of the woods yet. If we flop tomorrow, we are done for. On the other hand, they are still in the FA cup and are almost guaranteed 4th. Glasses house and what not
This is a thread about Pep and Man City though, I totally agree that we have our own problems so aren't really in any position to poke fun at others. That said I think if it were us going in to tonight's game with a two goal lead away from home, I'd be fairly confident of coming away with the result we need under Jose as compared to Pep whose unwillingness to change his attacking mentality.
I actually think some of their performances, especially in Europe last season were better under Pellegrini. Pep has a lot to live up to what with the rep he comes to this league with and thus far all in honesty, he is failing to live up to such hype whether City fans will agree or not.

For sure, Pep has flattered to deceive thus far. I watch City quite often, but in all honesty, I think they've regressed from last season. I know Pellegrini had to go, as it was more less the end of the road for him but City coveted Pep for best part of 3 years. They were building a team for him by appointing Txiki Begiristain, but so far it hasn't worked out at all and I don't really see what will change.
