Top 4 race 2016/17

United need a City/Pool draw today. That would really cause a log jam in the top four race imo - even more so if Spurs manage to draw today.

I'd prefer City to win and we concentrate on getting ahead of Liverpool. Can't see City slipping up enough in the run in.

I'd prefer a draw, as City have a murderous schedule ahead and its best for us if each of our rivals are weakened to the greatest extent possible. If they draw today, its bad for both them and Pool and then City have to deal with the following immediately after.

Man City:
Arsenal (A)
Chelsea (A)
Hull City
Southampton (A)
Middlesbrough (A)

That's some sort of heavy schedule!

With Pool we have no H2H left, while we probably need to beat City to make top 4 so that's one slip up right there.

First option for me is a Draw, then a City win.

Part of me thinks we should just be looking at one team at a time, Arsenal overtaken and then look at Liverpool etc but in the long run, the draw would be beneficial.

Agree with the first bit . A draw, or a City win would be the 2nd option.

As for overtaking individual teams, I see it the opposite way. The more rivals drop points the better imo. I'd like to see us finish 3rd or better, and Liverpool/City/Arse are there for the taking.

I think we are really finishing 7th. No joke.
A run in the EL could do you a lot of good, you still get the European nights and as long as you win it or get top 4 it could help restore some of your credibility across Europe.
I'm honestly enjoying our EL run this year, as long as it's one year.

We're finishing 3rd, so that leaves Man City and Liverpool - take your pick

You'll finish 5th imo. That of course depends on whether or not Wenger will be able to keep it all together with the players, dressing room etc.
Yeah, tough task ahead for Wenger to finish 5th. Christ! We have become a laughing stock :nervous:

Next 5 fixtures: (not counting today)

Man United:
West Brom
Everton
Sunderland (A)
Chelsea
Burnley (A)

Liverpool:
Everton
Bournemouth
Stoke (A)
West Brom (A)
Crystal Palace

Arsenal:
Man City
West Ham
Crystal Palace (A)
Middlesbrough (A)
Tottenham (A)

Tottenham:
Burnley (A)
Swansea City (A)
Watford
Bournemouth
Arsenal

Man City:
Arsenal (A)
Chelsea (A)
Hull City
Southampton (A)
Middlesbrough (A)

Chelsea:
Crystal Palace
Manchester City
Bournemouth (A)
Manchester United (A)
Everton (A)

Realistically and given City's fixture list, we should be well entrenched in 4th or 3rd by the end of the next 5

Everton and Chelsea will be no easy task for us though.

Very optimistic imo. I can't see us finishing ahead of either Spurs or City. Both those clubs know how to put teams away.

Spurs will be without Kane and will drop points and City have a difficult schedule ahead. I'm confident we will finish somewhere between 4th and 2nd.

I remember people shooting down anyone who didn't have Arsenal down to finish in the top 4 simply because "they're Arsenal, they always finish 4th".

Arsenal got their work cut out this year.

The issue is the frequency and volume of games after the international break. 4 games every 10/11 days til the end of the season.

Lets assume we pick up normal share of injuries and suspensions during that period - not sure we have the quality in depth.

Same with Burnley who have an excellent home record:

9 wins (Liverpool, Watford, Everton, Crystal Palace, Bournemouth, Middlesbrough, Sunderland, Southampton, Leicester City)
2 draws (Hull City, Chelsea)
3 defeats (Swansea, Arsenal, Man City)

Last time they lost a game at home was November.

Arsenal are in their 'dip', ie: they cant get much worse. I expect them to pick up quite soon.

We went on a good run in Dec/Jan - mostly wins, few draws. We just need to do the same in the coming months.
It's possible. If we put together another 6 game winning run we'd be well cemented in the top 4 I reckon. Pool and Arsenal will drop loads of points.

Agreed. I also like the fact that Zlatan is getting a bit of a rest as it will refresh him for the final two months. Once Pogba comes back we will be at full strength for the congested April fixtures.

What happens if we finish 4th and win the europa league. Does 5th place get a champions league spot? Imagine the smugness of knowing that Liverpool needed us to win the europa league to get them a champions league place.

No

Draw is a decent result for us. Ball is in United's court to see if they can overtake us with those two games in hand, but our fixture list looks kinder, and if we stay focused, I can see us keeping our spot.

No, we just get automatic qualification as opposed to having to go through qualifiers.

If Arsenal takes the Europa League seriously, I have no doubt that they will win it. All those teams are comfortably a tier below them and these are the teams Arsenal are good at beating.

Good weekend for us, Ars/Pool/City all dropping points.

The Bournemouth and Hull games ffs!

Pretty much as perfect a weekend as it gets.

Next round - City are away to Arse and Pool play Everton. If we take care of business v West Brom we will be in good shape going into the Everton fixture.
