Champions League QFs (11th - 19th April)

Bayern genuinely can't create chances from open play against Madrid anymore. They scored one header from a corner today but were otherwise mostly neutralized. In 2014 they created nothing in 120 minutes.

Also - Robben, Ribery, Lahm and Alonso will all be gone very soon and replacing them will be very difficult. Bayern, like us, will need to rebuild their team soon.
Bayern are very very predictable with their play and 4231 does not offer much creativity as well. When I can tell on the TV screen before it happens that what will be their next pass . No unpredictability.

You think Reals' midfielders aren't as technical as Bayerns'? Really?

Modric and Kroos are probably the 2 most technically gifted midfielders on the planet. The only midfielder for Bayern that would come close is Thiago. I love Vidal, but when it comes to on the ball technical quality, I don't think he comes close to Modric or Kroos, closer to Casemiero.

Casemiro knocks down Real a bit.

I think Vidal-Alonso-Thiago as a group are more technically gifted than Modric-Kroos-Casmeiro.

I mean it's pretty close either way.

What awesome football machines are Bayern and Real Madrid. Im in awe after that game...

Then i think of us, with the likes of jesse lingard and fellaini... Bayern and Real wouldnt stand a chance in the europa league

Amazing from Ronaldo, but more so from Neuer, he had 10 saves tonight, truly up there with Casillas and Buffon as the greatest keepers of the modern era.

Asensio is just sublime, will be a true Real Madrid great one day, brilliant attitude unlike some of our other players.

I think we should of had more goals, but had you told me we would win 1-2 at the start of the night, I would of taken it.

Going to be incredibly intense affair back in Madrid, a true UCL juggernaut match-up between the world's best. By no means is this tie over.

He does his job and he does it well, maybe better than anyone else in Europe.

Some of his numbers tonight:
Duels won - 9/13
Dispossessed - 1
Tackles won - 7/9
Passes - 56/64 88%

Not bad considering he was up against one of the very best midfields in the world.

Nice QF draw and big couple of nights, my sympathy to Dortmund, hard done by UEFA and their impossibility to stop the show, all the best to Bartra. No tie done and dusted imho, Barca moved boundaries last time so anything can happen: small margins, deflections, own goals, individual brilliance, collective effort, penalties, cards.

If I ask my magic 8 ball, I can see:
Leicester taking the lead at home against Atletico in the first half and then who knows;
Monaco and a reinvigorated Dortmund exchanging blows freely, table football style;
Bayern asserting themselves in Madrid and maybe tiring later in the game;
Barca scoring early and then going for set pieces and cards like a matador.

Who is going through then? I honestly can't say, as for Juve I would be genuinely shocked to crash out from a 3-0 lead but again, anything is possible at this level.

Yes 32 not bad, by the way that last minute he was looking a little bit injured, everything ok with him, and when will Pepe recover?
Pepe is out for the season, fractured ribs

Reports from Spain (and these are just preliminary) is that both Bale and Ronaldo had muscle soreness and will be evaluated back in Madrid.

Without Pepe for the Confederations is bad enough, even if looking at Ronaldo maybe it would be better for him to rest, but he always wants to play, so I expect him to be there in Russia in 2 months.

Pretty shoddy referee's decisions tonight. 3 pens awarded for a shoulder, a foul outside the box and a non-foul, and then an offside goal by Mbappe. Quarter finals no less.

Well, the club'll make sure that the transition will be smooth.
You are right though: Alaba, Kimmich, Coman, Sanches & Bernat are below the age of 26 - lot of players in their late 20s/early 30s.

The core with Neuer, Martinez/Hummels/Boateng, Vidal, Thiago, Lewandowski is still class + they have already wrapped up three signings for 17/18.

Was hoping Atletico would put Leicester to the sword tbh. I cannot wait for Leicester to feck off back to irrelevancy, the way people absolutely fawn over them is nauseating af.

I had forgotten about that damm Cup, is the first time Portugal playing in it so I'm sure Ronaldo would want to give his all for his country yet again. My only concern is that he has been playing an awful lot of games since the last year with Real Madrid and Portugal reaching the final instances of every tournament. I would be surprised if any other player had more minutes on his legs than Ronaldo since 2016, that's a lot of stress for his body so we better win the league and UCL because next season his going to need to rest and yet again prepare for world cup lol

Great game from Real, they were throughout the better team and played excellent in control. Apart from Ronaldos goals especially their fullbacks and Kroos (in the second half) were impressive I thought. Müller and Robben on the other hand had a night mare, horrible game from them.
Everything still can happen in the second leg but Real should go through - even if they struggle I expect a Ramos header to sort them out.
Oh and it was nice to see arrogant Bayern fans being shut up, they had become quite smug since Christmas. Maybe @fcbforever and the likes will refrain from boasting too much before the match.

Marcelo MotM in my books. What a player.
Also Kroos has been the best midfielder on the pitch by quite a margin.
Bayern were lucky that Neuer has been worldclass. Otherwise it would have been 1-5.
Overall very impressive performance by Real. They started to completely outplay Bayern before the harsh red card which was just a reaction to this fact.

It's high time football started using video replays.

Why they didn't just take those useless linemen behind the goal give 'em a couple tvs and a room in each stadium and told them to watch the replays of critical situations and tell the referee on the field what was actually going on I'll never know.

It's a travesty that every drunken tv commentator is able to judge difficult situations better than experienced referees, because they get to actually use technology that has been available for over a deacade and the referees don't.
But hey "It would take away from the suspense of the game" and stop the game for too long. As if the endless theatrics and discussions with players after each breath of wind wouldn't take away 15 minutes plus from some games.

But ... at least the Bundesliga wants to try out video replays starting next season. So maybe in 3 years or so the CL will finally be professional as well.

There was nothing harsh about the red. Two very clear yellows imo. Madrid is the best team in the world this season so far. No other team is capable of dominating Bayern on Allianz like that.

He's immense. The kind of quality full back you need in a top team, especially when you don't play traditional wingers. I've been banging on about our full backs not being good enough for a few months now. We need ours to step up or we need new signings there.

Both Marcelo and Carvajal are insane, definitely the best fullback in the world right now

I swear people see what they want to see, how were Madrid better than Bayern before the red card? They barely created anything and whenever they were on the counter bayern had more than enough men behind the ball. Bayern themselves didn't create all that much, it was a really balanced affair.

this is nothing new in europe, ties are often decided by refereeing decisions in the KO stages just as much as anything else.

Yeah, we've been shit yesterday. As soon as we get under pressure we lose the ability to play the simplest of passes and random opposite players suddenly turn into messi and walk through 3 or 4 of our defenders without a problem. Morata says hello. Also that defending of the first goal... Everybody looks at the ball, not one of the three defenders around looks at Ronaldo.
We made the Real Madrid defence look like fecking Atletico, we didn't have a real threatening attack the whole evening. The best chance would have been the wrong offside call on Müller where he would have been through on goal but referees are complete garbage nowadays. First that shit show at Dortmund - Monaco, then two huge feck ups in the Bayern - Madrid game.
Javi (until his stupid first yellow), Vidal and Neuer were the best Bayern players, the rest was quite useless.

Carvajal is such a quality RB. Also the way he plays, with 100% intensity and desire. Since he's their RB Madrid have won 2 CL's in 3 years.

God when you say it like that.....it's depressing :(:(
we had the misfortune of running into perhaps the best club team of all time in 2 finals. Madrid seem to get the rub of the green in CL ties always whereas the reverse seems to be the case for us.

The season Bayern won the Champions League a few years ago, they had regular starters of the same format like those two. You don't need eleven "magic-tootsies" in football.

Yeah Marcelo has been a beast for Real for years now. Absolute cracker of a player and great to watch as well. Love Ramos as well. Both are so aggressive in their style of play but they can afford that due to their pace.

Real Madrid are the club that I and every football fan who isn't a Real supporter should hate purely due to their success, and somewhat dodgy antics, but I fecking love watching them. Don't get me wrong, I loved getting one over them with Pogba and seeing them get beat by under dogs in the league and such but I've always been Real > Barcelona. Never was a huge fan of Barca's tiki-taka style of play; it can be very laborious to watch when it's not in full flow, unfortunately we were the victims of itwhen it was at it's peak.

I agree with this. Real Madrid were a bit scary tbh, without being at their best, they still looked like a threat in each attack. They clearly scared Bayern

Dante. That's it.

Dante. That's it.

I don't think Dante was mediocre that season and in any case it's a lot easier to carry a mediocre CB than it is on crucial attacking positions. So that comparison is completely pointless.

He wasn't mediocre but he was the weak link in the team.

The counter pressing from the forwards protected him a lot but whenever he was isolated one vs one he was very prone to big errors and should have been sent off in the champions league final.

In the semi finals against Barcelona he was rarely isolated as Bayern where compact both horizontally and vertically and to paraphrase Lord Cruijff, give me a small space to defend and I'm the best defender in the world.

van Buyten: 23 games, Luis Gustavo: 36 games, Tymo: 24 games, Shaqiri: 39 games

Lingard: 31 games, Fellaini: 39 games
And? Still squad players. None of them were starters. Lingard and Fellaini aren't starters either
