Truth like rain don't give a feck who it falls on.

Interesting, will no doubt pave the way for future human clinical trials. Messing with genes is some next level stuff, science can be scary!

This is the process they used. Copying and pasting healthy DNA to try and eliminate disease.

Who knows, one day in the future someone will make a thread in the general and we'll reply 'AIDS, get well soon' instead of RIP.

Announcing this publicly is only going to lead to a decrease in the use of mice condoms.

This is the most important part.

News articles on scientific breakthroughs tend to be overly optimistic, but eliminating AIDS from a living mammal without killing it is a huge step.

Sure they're all into curing these fancy diseases like HIV and Cancer, but what about male pattern baldness huh? Where's the cure for that?

The CRISPR technology is mind blowing. I think it was @Pogue Mahone who started a thread on it a while back.

As obviously good as this kind of thing is on the face of it, I do worry about what it means for the future in terms of population growth.

Don't worry about that. Its just a matter of time before the next big pandemic wipe out half of the population. Nature's reset button.

Finally my shares in gay mice nightclubs is going to pay dividends!

The Cas9 protein finds you the target, the repairing part use the other DNA strand as a template to repair the cut out one. Doesn't help that much if your genetics decide you're gonna be bald

CRISPR could probably be of use there as well. As of now, the possibilities seem endless.

Positive news but HIV/AIDS shouldnt lead to RIP in the western world at least. Modern medicine renders it more a lifelong condition than the death sentence it was in the 80s

HIV isn't really a big deal in developed countries now right? It's completely manageable without too much of a hassle. Pretty sure Magic Johnson's had it 25 years.

I'm not even offended i just find it weird how "gay" being used in a derogatory way is acceptable - see the signature scent thread also.

If people started using derogatory phrases regarding race, it'd get pulled up quicker. Where is the distinction?

No paedophile or rape jokes before anyone thinks of posting any. Should go without saying but I know what some of you are like.

With modern HAART therapy it's not the death sentence that it used to be, however it's still something of a miserable existence unless you strictly adhere to your therapy, which is an issue for some people in terms of availability. You're still gonna get recurrent infections and stuff, still more predisposed to exotic infections and certain cancers etc but for the most part HIV can be considered more of a chronic disease these days than a death sentence, once you can access treatment and stick to it.
