If we win the Europa league

If given a choice between choosing CL or EL it's obvious which one to go for, no arguments there; but prioritizing a cup run (however prestigious the competition) over an actual trophy? I would want us to be in CL IFF we have a squad that atleast can give a fair fight to the RMs, Bayerns and Barcas (as of now we don't).
What??? that is some small time mentality. We might as well be Feyenord. I would much rather us be in the CL. We played in it all the time when we got nowhere near winning it but I would never have thought, "gee I hope we come 8th so we can give the Europa a good go. champions league is too tough"
Do you think that Monaco and Juve thought they had squads that could rival Real's at the start? Juve have sold 3 of their best players recently. Monaco were an unknown. If everyone had you attitude, we may as well just do a 4 team play off with Real, Barca, Bayern and Juve/Atletico or something

I will remember losing to Bayern more than any of our matches in the EL this season.

ditto. my colleague is a Liverpool fan and he sees United winning the Europa as a pain in the backside for us, more as a means to an ends kind of a "arrrrgh I guess we have to if we want to be where we need to be next season." They just aren't memorable nights. I will forget the Anderlecht, Celta, Ettienne ties in a jiffy

The Europa League is mickey mouse, where as the FA cup isnt when you play non-league opposition in the FA cup...brilliant reasoning there (perhaps some english bias there as well). The EL is a good stepping stone towards the CL, if you win it you can probably make it into the knockout stages of the CL as a 2nd seed.

As far as level of opposition is concerned it goes CL, League=EL, FA cup, League cup. The FA cup and League cup are virtually mickey mouse now since most top teams rest their players until they reach the latter stages. The mighty Tottenham who are 'the best footballing side' in the league got knocked out of the Europa League.

By that definition, so are most of United's achievements. Weren't happy in 91, or not born?
It was slightly tongue in cheek but beating Cruyff's Barcelona in the CWC final is worth more than beating Ajax in the EL final would be.

Yes, ladbrokes, unibet, names like that. It's mainly a British pass time and in lots of European countries it isn't even legal. The odds are dominated by what the British think.
Actually that's not true at all. The betting turnover is dominated by what the Asian think. The likes of SBObet take much much more than any UK bookmarker.

I can't argue with that because it was a monumental night, but, still, beating Ajax (if we get there) would be pretty good, right?

Winning the Europa league should be a bare minimum for United now. Anderlecht and Celta Vigo. Seriously, that's a cake walk. You've done well to avoid the likes of Schalke, Ajax and Lyon.

I fancy you to beat a very youthful but talented Ajax side in the final. The game will probably be similar to the league cup final. One team doing all the playing while the other just barely stays in the game and then individual brilliance and experience decides it for the other team.

And I would be more excited by the Europa League if we had major scalps along the way. But, we have faced mediocre competition at every step and we have not even destroyed the subpar competition we have been up against.

It really would be HUGE for you.

Also this^
The effects of you winning it would be equivalent to the Rafa Chelsea
you think winning this might get them to kick on to the next level?

Winning any trophy is important, winning 2 will give them a taste of the success, could be good for us.

Celta were being hyped here as strong opposition until we played against them. Now apparently Schalke who are midtable in the Bundesliga was one of the teams to fear, while Celta who are midtable in La Liga are a cake walk.

Sounds like you brought up the league cup final just to have a random dig at United. If not, feel free to explain how half the possession and 10 shots on target (and 3 goals) qualifies as barely staying in the game.

It has been pretty clear since the round of 16 that there was no one left in the tournament that should really challenge us.

You beat what's in front of you. Very excited at the prospect of playing in a European final. I hope OT is buzzing this evening.

If United win the Europa League...

United will be the reigning FA Cup*, League Cup and Europa League Champions!

*For a few days

Firstly we need to focus on the job in hand - getting to the final. Beat Celta first and then concentrate on beating Ajax. But if we do go on and win it it'll be a defining moment I think - not just because its silverware in the cupboard, but hopefully a catalyst for better things - a sort of Mark Robins, City Ground, Nottingham, 1990 sort of moment if you will.

Only United could be just about to play the second leg of European semi-final and have fans falling over themselves to paint it as nothing to get excited about. Do you guys have any joy in your lives?
Given how excited you are about the Europa League are you on any level hoping that we don't win it so that we get to play in it again next season?

I saw my first game in 1964 and of course we won the league in '65 and again in '67 and topped it off with the European Cup in '68. This winning stuff was easy. Then we didn't win the League again for 26 fecking years. In the meantime every Cup win, even every finals appearance was like an oasis in the desert. Every time we won at Wembley was a celebration, every loss was a catastrophe. I want to win the Europa League this year. If we happen to be in it next year I want to win it as well. I want to win every competition we enter. 26 fecking years - it scars your soul.

The 26 years were without a League title - it doesn't sound like those other trophies we won in that period were really giving you too much comfort.

By that logic, we shouldn't have lost points against lowly opposition in PL but look where we stand in the table right now. Like someone pointed out, being consistent with victories looks far more easier on the paper than it actually turna out to be.

Every little helps man. Every little helps. Football wise those trophies kept me sane. :wenger:

That's some top notch inference right there. Instead, we should be sad about being in Europa and lose as early as possible so we are out of that damned tournament. Heck, I suggest United sqaud doesn't show up and we get disqualified automatically or something. Maybe we should try dropping out of top 7 standings too in PL so we don't play in this abomination of a tournament again.

Anyone who is excited by the prospect of us doing well in a tournament we have been previously humiliated in under both Sir Alex and LvG, a trophy we have never been before should go consult a doctor. We are Man Utd and we have automatic rights to be in CL and win PL.

Even though all our rivals saying its micky mouse trophy and its better to lose in CL than winning EL deep inside they are hoping for our loss as we will have another trophy and in the CL group stages for next season which will help us to attract bigger names.

There were certainly a lot of people suggesting that earlier this season.

He wants us to win it (which gets us into the CL) - if we end up in it again (due to failing in the CL) he'd want us to win it again. Why is this so hard for people to understand?

Wanting to win the europa league does not = I dont want to be in the CL.

Yeah. The same people who don't want anyone to be excited about the prospects of winning it now. At the end of the day, this tournament might well save our season, get us playing in CL next season, get us top quality players who are only winning to switch to CL sides and as a result get us back to the big boys league again after slumming it four years now.

Because if they made it sound complex enough, they think they look like proper football critics and the people who "actually get football and United"
