Victor Lindelöf | Officially signs

Delighted to see a new signing confirmed so soon and that Jose is going for another young defender to build a team with.

Very insightful article. Makes one think that the only thing missing in that pair, apart from not having the ideal left-sided centre back in either of them (Rojo), is for Bailly to really develop his aerial prowess and his heading technique.

Never seen or heard of him before.

Can't see any similarities, tbh.

Ah yeah he does a bit. Never seen him before though so it can't be who I was thinking of.

Lol, I meant Magnus Betnér.

When veteran Luisão retuned to the line-up last season, Lindelöf moved over to left centre-back to accommodate the Brazilian. Although the 22-year-old performed well in the role, many of his best performances have come from the right side of central defence.

From there, the right-footed Swede was able to link incredibly effectively with adventurous right-back Nélson Semedo, a reported Barcelona transfer target. Bailly also tends to start at right-centre-back, so that could be a problem for Mourinho to solve should Lindelöf arrive at Old Trafford, where he would surely relish the prospect of picking out the forward runs of Antonio Valencia with his trademark vertical passes.

Hmm.

I meant at the highest level. No wonder we're struggling to offload players when we pay them so much.
100k really isn't that much for a player of his caliber joining us for over 30mil.

Don't worry, they won't start that many games together.
I'd have assumed the intention was to have Lindelof and Bailly as our starting partnership for the foreseeable future.

Two inexperienced center-backs, really? Bailly is great, I'll grant you that, but he's a bit on the crazy side and also irregular. Lindelöf might be out of his depth here. Don't think Mourinho will risk it, honestly. And there's no rush, is there? Jones or Blind can perfectly stand for Rojo while he's injured, at least in harder games.

I really think we need to fire one of those guys. They're team mates in hospital more than they are on the pitch.
i would get shut of both and promote tuanzebe to regular duties. We may still buy another CB

That's the thing, we don't quite know his caliber yet do we?
Well we are paying over 30mil for him, so I'd hope the club would have a fair idea. You're not going to pay 50/60k to a player with a price tag that high.

He looks like someone but I can't think who.

I'm super happy with this signing; he is going to be a beast!

I first came across him about seven years ago while researching Scandinavian youth players for a management game. I can't remember who they were playing but it was while he was at Västerås S. He was extremely raw but very quick and very aggressive. He didn't look like a potential world beater but looked much better than his age. I've only seen about ten full Benfica games in the past couple of years but he has stood out each time except one.

For those not familiar with him, he is not world class (yet) but has the potential to be. He is a tough bastard, taller than he looks and has that Vidic fear factor about him; I can see him getting a lot of cards in the PL. He is a strong tackler and good in the air (finally someone who could be useful in the box for corners!) His passing skills are pretty good but not excellent and in my opinion his positioning can be a little suspect at times.

I'm curious to see how he settles with Bailly as they both seem pretty similiar. Maybe Mourinho is going to turn one of them into a Rio.

One of the main concern is what happens when or if rojo, jones and smalling are back fully fit. Then you will have five central defenders vying for two positions. I dont know if he is going to sell one defender or is assuming that they will be injured next season as well and thus and needs a cover.

Welcome Victor! Looking forward to a back 3 of Rojo Bailly and Victor

4 CBs is normal and jones is always injured so doesn't matter

But Rojo plays as a lb in argentina, and with world cup looming he could get minutes as a lb this season.
Says who?
No way, all three of Darmian, Blind and Shaw are much better at LB than Rojo.

 No harm in dreaming I suppose!

Seriously though, I think Jones will be pushed out either this summer or winter (probably winter due to Mojo Rojo's injury. Jones is decent when he's fit but he can barely manage 15 games a season without injuring himself or somebody else. There's just no point in keeping him.

Bailly / Lindelof / Rojo / Smalling
Looks promising to me.

Good luck. Very sad that him and Ederson only lasted 18 months in our team. 31M£ is also very little. It will be the cheapest buy, I'm certain.

Watch out for his aerials duals, his weakness.

I think that's Mourinho's idea. Like i said he needs to work on his aerial game, in both ends. Needs to be a bigger threat in offensive set pieces. Other than that, i think he's a good signing. Sensible start to the transfer market. I like the look of United's defense. Bailly, Rojo, Lindelof, Smalling, Blind, Phil Jones, that's impressive. Now seriously focus on a decent striker and a couple of quality wingers.

It's a worry if he's not strong aerially in the Portuguese league.

I watched him against France and he struggled a bit physically against Giroud. If he is generally not great in the air it's hard to see him being paired with Bailly until they both improve that area of their game.

It suggests to me that short term at least, Smalling will still start a lot of games and if any defender leaves the club this summer it will be Jones.

Well that's exactly what we need, isn't it? Rashford said it in an interview a few days ago.
5 guys, with specific talents, all young or relatively young, going into their late 20s (arguably footballers' best years) fighting to prove one of the best managers around that they have what it takes to play for one of the best teams around. If that doesn't bring the best out of them and benefit the team, then what will?

The crazy amount of money that they already earn?

I think he looks like Toni Kroos.

She takes the news quite well, to be fair. 'Omg, okay' as soon as he posts the fixtures.
