Same here - the spin-off core concept in itself is quite repetitious, but the visuals are always exciting!

It's just so bloody slow. I watched 80+ episodes before giving up on that.
Ow, you were just about to reach Logue Town, and the starting point of the Alabasta Saga - which is where things kicks up a notch. Plus, two critical characters of the One Piece story-line will assume prominent roles in the following arcs:

They made the right choice. Manga > Anime (when it comes to adaptations).

Dunno, One Piece anime has its ups and downs, but is hardly post-Sasuke Recovery Mission Naruto where the difference is like night and day. Yes, you spend 5 mins per chapter vs 20 per episode so it's more immediately gratifying, and the art is better and more gritty in the manga version with fewer needlessly stretched out fights. But the anime is really good through Drum Island, Alabasta, Skypeia, Water 7, G-8, Enies Lobby - and then Summit War with Sabaody, Amazon Lilly, Impel Down - right up to Marineford - beyond which it hits glacial speed on an annoyingly frequent basis in Fishman Island and Punk Hazard. The manga is undoubtedly better in that it follows canon per Oda and is more condensed, but the non-filler parts of the anime version where the pacing's more consistent is great for binge watching, IMO.

Little Witch Academia Season 1 is on netflix, animated by the great Yoh Yoshinari. If you like beautiful animations and magic, this is a fun watch.

I guess the problem is if you have already read the manga, the fillers and battle screen with 4/5 cutscenes, flashbacks etc are super annoying, which kills the experience.

Anime when done right with an original script is as good as any form of entertainment on offer. AOTT, CG, Clannad etc...

I'm still fairly pro anime when it comes to One Piece, at least pre-timeskip. I even found most of the filler material enjoyable.

Er not sure I'd agree with that, though I suspect it's more of a subjective thing. The entirety of One Piece anime isn't littered with copious amounts of unnecessary cut-scenes and flashbacks, and even though I'd read a fair bit of the manga before watching the anime more than a decade ago, it was still an overwhelmingly positive experience because of the characters, the voice acting, the world-building, the funny bits, the music - and much, much more.

Some bits are definitely blown out of proportion out of necessity to dramatize things and fill out the airtime, and pacing issues and fillers are inevitable in a shōnen anime that's close to 800 episodes long with a source material spanning 850+ manga chapters across 2 decades without any significant 'breaks' or reboots (eg. HunterxHunter caught up with the source and had to go on a hiatus) because of how the media is licensed in batches - it's impossible to maintain production quality or consistency or a uniform pace à la Clannad or Code Geass which are cookie cutter ~20 episodes per season + OVA anime.

As an aside, if anyone is interested in streamlined One Piece, there's a fan made version called One Pace (sans non-can filler and extended DBZ-esque back-and-forth scenes): http://onepace.net/watch/. Found it handy for Punk Hazard and Dressrosa in particular.

For those who have read or are interested in Junji Ito's manga (inspiration for movies like Uzumaki, and the Tomie series):

Blame (Netflix standalone)

Very interesting premise. Nicely done too. Plot kinda picks up in the middle and drops off in the middle without a satisfying conclusion. But not that long a show, show still worth a watch.

6/10

Now to watch Attack on Titan and Berserk

I need to watch steins gate when I get home from the Netherlands. Too many people liking it to not give it a try.

I watched the first 6/7 eps of Steins;Gate, and it was good. But I just didn't continue with it.

UK TV channel VICELAND is now airing anime. I've only noticed it on in the middle of the night the past month or so and so far I've seen Cowboy Bebop and Tokyo Ghoul listed. There's 3 Tokyo Ghoul's on tonight starting from the 1st episode at 3:10am.

Rewatching Hellsing Ultimate and it's better than I remembered, back when Ultimate only had 3 episodes. Highly recommended if you like some action, gore, vampires and very long European style names.

Lads, which website allows for the download of whole anime series? I need to report such scum to the authorities. PM appreciated!

I really love dark, psychological anime. Some of my favorites:

1) Shiki - all time favorite. In a struggle between humans and the undead, the anime explores the possibility that maybe humanity is darker and more depraved than the undead could ever be. Soulful music too.

2) Madoka Magica - This is a grim genre deconstruction of the magic girls trope, creating a terribly morbid tale of Nietzschean proportions. Urobutcher's best work and Yuki Kajiura's music is sublime.

3) Elfen Lied - Tragic, brutal and dark. A serial killer with a split personality, but much more than that.

4) Deadman Wonderland - The anime wasn't completed but I had to read the manga to finish the story. Again, it is quite a grim tale with a heavy dollop of violence.

Plenty more, but these are my absolute favorites. I always like the morbid stuff.

@Kapardin, you should definitely watch Serial Experiments Lain, if you haven't already.

Would also rec. Psycho-Pass, Aku no Hana, Ergo Proxy and Mousou Dairinin from the dark, psychological genre, as well as Monster (@Yagami can couch for this, too, hehe).

I have watched Lain, Psychopass and Monster as well. Of these, I really liked Psychopass season 1 (season 2 was by a different writer and it sucked). Lain was ok, Monster was average as well -- I felt the writers didn't know how to stretch it to 74 episodes and it was sort of meandering.

Will give the rest a try. Been meaning to see Ergo Proxy too.
