You don't think averaging around £50m a full back is insane? When our record is £28m for one?

They're paying around that for a reserve right back
It's their money, it's their problem. I thought £89m for Pogba was insane last season, it isn't when you consider this season. They are overpaying because they have money but we can't deny that they aren't building something there. They are also buying players that have at least 5-6 years in them and if it brings in trophies and titles in that season, the owners will say it's money well spent. Let's not forget that City were relatively nobodies 15 years ago, and the only way they can rival the big boys is to spend stupidly. It doesn't always work ala Notts County and I'm sure it's the route of City that Wolverhampton Wanderers want to take to make them the dominant club in the West Midlands. As long as no rules are broken, the game is the game.
All we have to be concerned is making sure that we are better than them, which is something Fergus did regardless of what they spent. What they are spending is not my concern is what they are building.

It's clear since Pellegrini last season that those positions (both wings) were upgradeable. Perhaps Pep thinks his philosophy can do miracle & prolong these outgoing fullbacks playing them as some weird narrow midfielder or as central defenders at one point or another during the past season?

Signing one or 2 back last summer would mean they can both get better value & in better negotiating position come this summer. Remember Dani Alves did move last summer with Pep was announced way before the transfer market window open.

I don't know. We could also ask why Fergie didn't buy a CM when it looked the weakest area. It's obviously better to things earlier or pay the price literally

Dier the new smokescreen for Matic? We surely know Levy won't sell us Dier even for 40/50 million but might be doing it to play Chelsea for the second time this window....

Until JM or EW come out and say our transfers are complete for the summer then there's deals still being worked on.
There is over a month of the window so cannot see them saying it's done. In fact if they did that with all this time left people would go nuts. So here's hoping for news.

The idea that we would bid £40 odd million as a smokescreen to buy somebody else is just laughable. If we have put a bid in for Dier then we want him, pure and simple.

That Dier bid was a while back according to the guardian, and rejected off hand. Levy wouldn't sell us their third choice U18 left back so don't see us getting Dier.

I think Dier is our first choice for DMF. Matic is the plan b if it failed. The problem will be in how to secure Dier from Spurs.

I'm pretty sure David Gill or Fergie used come out and say the transfer business was done mid summer as we would acquire our targets quite early in the summer.

Why's he so adamant on leaving? Has something gone wrong between him and people within the club?
AC Milan are an exciting project, historically huge plus he'll be paid more.

What do Dortmund have to offer? 2nd/3rd in the league every season and a good atmosphere? Bundesliga is trash.

60 mill ought to do it.

I think I'll have no problem if we paid this for him tbh. If full backs are sold in this market for +50m, then midfielders will be worth more anyway.

Dier is young and still have room for development. The price may very well be seen as a bargain some years later.

You took my post wrongly. The difference on SAF dealing is his team is good enough to challenge & win the league without upgrading the CM position. Then we had a monster midfielder in Pogba in our academy (Raiola played a blinder on it with SAF being stubborn), so there were some planning on long term. Herrera was tracked under SAF too which his signing was club signing as both Moyes & LVG didn't really know him that well. SAF proved his decision is right. Thing is people are talking about where SAF left (still a very healthy situation for a competent manager to take over) without acknowledging his genius & what he would have done in those situation. They applied their own thinking into the situation & brought out generic narrative from ANBU about SAF would have struggled in same situation if he had continued. It has been proven again & again that SAF keeps improving himself & eventually overcome obstacles & new challenges. ABU has been long for the day where SAF wouldn't respond their wrong accusation, that is when he retired & has no team to manage. :smirk:

Here the City situation is they didn't upgrade last season, leaving themselves tackling all the expected problem now. Pep didn't disprove nothing from the doubt people have about his philosophy (having better players than his rivals & false development vs fine tuning). Of course nothing wrong about fixing the problem by forking out inflated market price. Just saying it's not some sort of genius doing so.

Carrick & Berbatov were obvious exceptions? Levy will sell any unhappy player, but he'll rightly extract top dollar for them.

So frustrated...Milan signing a whole new team, City picking off players they want left and right and yet we struggle.....how in the feck were we not able to get a decent fecking DM or winger by now?? Surely Mourinho has to be asking questions about Verratti since PSG want Neymar so bad. Prices are so out of control now...Ive always preferred a good younger player as so that we can build a dominate team for years to come.....offer 85m for Keita....go all in and offer 100m for Verratti....do something Woody!!!! Matic would be fine but hes 29 and we will be looking for another DM in a couple of seasons and thats IF Matic does the job.....

Moyes is the biggest effing culprit of that problem.

Mourinho wants Matic or Dier. However underwhelming they might seem, they're the manager's choice. Woodward isn't going to go for players the manager doesn't want, hence why we've not been linked with Keita or Verratti. Even if we did want Verratti, PSG have made it clear he isn't available.
