I've no idea where people get this idea from. We've spent big several windows in a row. Sure, we won't be paying 200M+ release clauses, but that's just mental.
For every player people don't understand why we don't go for him there's a far more reasonable explanation down the "does Mourinho want him?" path. E.g. being outbid by Spurs for Aurier, there's a million reasons for that more reasonable than financial restraint.
Really a replacement? Among the 150 players Chelsea has under contract there is not one.

Not too sure, they're both right footed and crossing is neither's main strength. Rashford perhaps could make the transition, doubt it though, and as for Martial I don't see that at all as he's at his most effective coming in onto his right from wide areas.
A voice of reason, finally. I just can't understand the criticism of our spending. We have been heavy spenders for a while now. As you say there might be many reasons why we are not active in the market now.
My speculation is that we have our targets for the summer of 2018, and that Mourinho has a clear vision of what he wants. One of those players might be Griezmann. And that he is patient when it comes to the wide player that he wants. Mourinhos track record in the market as our manager has been magnificent, and I have total faith in his decisions. People need to accept that while we are rich, we are not backed by a state flush with oil money. We have a budget and need to pick our targets with a lot of consideration.
Less Aurier more Perisic, he wanted the move, we were given a price and Ed and the Glazers wouldnt budge on it so we didnt pay it and he's staying. Sounds like a financial retsraint to me.
Aurier was also needed for Valencia cover/roatation as we are now aware that Valencia has been playing with an injury and his price tag was miniscule compared to other full back prices this summer. But we've passed up the opportunity and now he will go to spurs, frustrating.
Something isn't right, it has to be for financial reasons though, maybe the Galzers want value in the market with our next few windows after splashing lavishly on players. who knows.

You can be free of strict budgets but still refuse to pay an obscene price. If we wanted to we could have easily paid the price for Perisic, but sanity prevailed.

You've spent a shit load of money and whilst you haven't won the things you want, you've still won trophies. Even with all your financial prowess there's got to be a limit to how much you can do. You aren't backed by a country like PSG. You get somewhat close to 200 mill every summer post Fergie, I'm desperate for us to do that this summer cause we've saved up for it and it's the next stop. Insinuating the board are ripping you off is just going to create a needlessly toxic atmosphere. Your owners aren't withholding money.

Forgetting the 3 years prior to Pogba where we spent huge sums on the likes of AdM, Martial, Mata, Herrera, even Fellaini.
Also love how spending £150 million in one summer is now considered financial restraint.
When we sent TFM out on loan, it was reported that Jose wanted to keep him last season so he was comfortable with the size of the club and when he returns he wouldn't be in awe of it and would be taking over from Valencia.

Hmm I haven't looked at the figures was a ball park guess but I imagine your outlay is up there, without wanting to sound condescending you have the most expensively assembled squad in world football and there's nothing wrong with that. You don't get any trophies for spending nothing and finishing second. I just find it daft to read in to it and slight the owners. Some owners truly are cnuts and invest minimally in the playing squad, yours aren't one of them lately. The players you bought may be questionable but the backing is there.
ADM: Sold him next year for a 15m loss.
Martial: Bought him in a summer we had a net spend of 33m.
Mata: 38m after many years of no spending. Ok, fair enough.
Herrera: 28m and value for money, but not exactly huge.
Fellaini: Yeah, after months and months of chasing other targets, we finally relented on the last day of the window and spent 28m on Fellaini.
Inter's valuation of Perisic was crazy, we just didn't feel he was worth it and it was a right decision IMO.

We've spent big money in the last 3/4 years, but I feel like with the Perisic transfer, there seems to be a slight shift in our negotiation position. A few summers ago, we'd have likely paid what Inter were asking and got it done, but this summer we not only didn't get that deal done, but also haven't got any alternative options (which Mourinho must have given Woodward before the start of the window). Mourinho has commented about the 4 players he wanted many times this window and it looks like we're only getting 3.
My main point is that, yes, we have spent money but we're also the richest team in the league so obviously we're going to have an expensive team. While we've just started spending according to our revenue since 2014, we're still a few players short. I would argue now that Man City and PSG have the world's most expensive squads after this window.
And between 2009 and 2014, the owners used United to take out 1.2b from the club and invested minimally in the team, essentially being a factor behind the Moyes chaos season. They're okay owners in that they seemingly don't interfere in the team, but they'e hardly among the best.
In fairness that was for a free flowing Arsenal. Wonder how many he would have scored with our stodgy attack from last year. We play a lot different to them, even this year when we are are a lot better offensive. I agree he is the sort of hardworking player that Mourinho likes, ignoring Sunday's performance, but don't think he is a marquee player & any better than what we have.
That is also known as setting a budget, which lets face it, any well run business or sports team should do.
I really don't think there was an alternative for Perisic. We knew at least one alternative name for the other targets (Keane, Dier) but not for Perisic.

You've spent more than £140M this summer alone, and that's net of sales. Over the last 4 summers(14-15-16-17) you've considerably outspent PSG...and THAT is why they could sign Neymar and you couldn't
Fair point, but if the difference is between spending an extra 30m now or losing out on the Premier League, it doesn't seem to make sense from a business point of view.
The original post was saying we had spent 200m in EACH summer since Fergie left. I was just saying we haven't spent that in ANY individual one of them. Also, of course it's net of sales. We haven't sold anyone.
