BBC Sport: La Liga asks Uefa to investigate Man City's financial fair play

Why do they care?

Sour grapes IMO.

I'm no fan of City's but I don't see the point in moaning about their financial muscle. Money has always been a big part of football. All the petroclubs have done is take it to the next level. Doesn't matter to me, just makes beating them feel even better.

Spanish institutions think they are the Gods of Football.

Why do they care?

It didn't matter too much all along until it started to affect poor Barca and Real....waaaa we can't compete with the sugar daddy oil clubs who are now taking our players and stealing our transfer targets so please do something UEFA.

Thought this would happen to be honest.

The Spanish clubs, and their league, are all about financial fair play now that the oil clubs are hurting them. RM and Barca can no longer cherry-pick the best players and they're having to pay their own players huge amounts to keep them (Messi wouldn't be earning £400k a week if the Qatari and UAE royal families weren't around).

Now that the Spanish giants are on board, there's more chance of something being done IMO. RM and Barca are Champions League royalty and Uefa will want to keep them on-side.

Long term, however, I still reckon we'll end up with a breakaway Super League of the 'traditional' clubs.

Don't know why they've randomly picked City and not PSG... but yeah sounds like they're just having a strop about not having it their own way any more!

They've already went hell bent trying to get UEFA after PSG. It's just City are on the same boat so it makes it look less personal calling a second club out on their state back power too.

More specifically than the Primera, it is Javier Tebas who has called for it - an unabashed RM supporter

The only good thing to come out of the oil money to City and PSG is getting to see RM and Barca throw their toys out the pram for not having it all their own way anymore.

Your dead right, now that Real and Barca are on board they might actually do something although I think it will still come to nothing but for now its a win win, either City and PSG will end up in trouble and can't blow everyone else out of the water for transfers OR nothing happens but it further unsettles La Liga and the spanish giants in particular meaning they are brought down a peg or two globally and they lose out on more players in the future, further reducing their standing and leading also to some of their current players heads being turned to move elsewhere in the process.

Either way it should help us in terms of player acquisition going forward.

Ah that makes sense... they're still just having a hissy fit :D

City will come for Messi and this happens.
I do think it should be done, No club can compete vs a country. It has to happen and financial doping clubs need to be brought under check.

It would be in our best interests if madrid and barca win this battle and ffp is tightened up as a consequence. I have no love for either of the spanish clubs but would like seeing citys spending reined in.

It might be sour grapes from La Liga but something does need to be done. Saudi Princes with trillions of oil dollars can't be allowed to run riot.

It is understandable to be fair. The money is not really revenue and such. A way around the FFP is for the owners to sponsor the club with self created investments/companies.

When the likes of PSG are getting massive sponsorships by a Qatar group that is clearly to do with the owners. Surely that shouldn't be allowed? The sponsorships don't correspond with their success and history. How can clubs that before they got bought out less than 10 years ago, who were last successful in the 60's, be able to match the finances of the big clubs that have been successful for a long long time. Loopholes around FFP need to be tackled.

inevitable i think... I also expect some of the games to take place in the middle east (Qatar will have a lot of stadiums sitting there for example) - wouldnt be surprised to see games in USA and Far east as well - the money will be just too good to turn down.

Could actually see it as a midweek league thats clubs take part in outside of the CL - no pesky UEFA FFP rules and no need to leave their traditional leagues (games outside europe in the winter break etc)

Id be shocked if we didn't see it in the next 10 years.

Barca throwing their toys out of their pram? Good. :D

City and PSG possibly being reined in a bit? Also good. :D

Exactly, imagine if Bill Gates decided to take an interest in football and bought a club. And just pumped all his money into football because he wanted a way to spend all his money. It isn't fair that super rich people who think of it as more of a hobby, just spend hundreds of millions when true clubs have to earn to spend.

Yeah dock them 200 points and send them down to the conference please.

Being a United fan, I don't give a crap about city but why the feck are these spanish club so agitated. All they have been doing for years is buying players through corrupt money. Real.madrid's a** were saved in early 2000 by the government, barca have been doing some shady deals for many years. I am happy other clubs have now started to stand tall and refuse to let them have the players they want.

Yeah the timing of this is strangely coinciding with City's rumoured interest in Barcelona's best player. Still, they are within their rights to file a complain and get governing bodies to intervene or at least hold an investigation.

City will have the money in their books to cover for their expenditures though. They are generating more and more revenue and have some lucrative sponsorship deals signed.

Yeah but both have recently been handed transfer band for their transfer activities which stepped out of the line and usually when they bought big, they had to repay with their earned money.

Even if their reasoning is petty, they're right. These are state-back clubs with unlimited wealth. For all people can complain about Madrid and Barca hoarding the best players, they didn't acquire them through brute financial force. They spent a lot but not to the point where other clubs were priced out. I'm not sure how the spending of City and PSG will play out in the long term, but after City spent half a billion in two years, PSG spent near that in two players, and they could both easily double that spending without second thought. Yeah it's "funny" that clubs are getting one over Barcelona for once, and it'll be funny when City pay Messi a million pounds a week to play for them next season. But the long term implications of this cannot be good for the sport.

These are UEFA's rules. Petty or not, La Liga shouldn't have to ask UEFA to enforce them, as they should be doing so automatically. Either that or get rid of the rule.

City were caught out by FFP two years ago and both years since have spent significantly more...so either they have, for no apparent reason, massively increased their income in a very short space of time, or they are deliberately breaking the rules in the knowledge UEFA are allowing them too...This is called corruption and very much should be made an issue of, regardless of whether La Liga are only doing it out of self interest.

Other teams are having to balance books despite having every opportunity to use invested money. You can't have one or two outside of that just doing what they want. Otherwise you might as well start allowing certain teams to field 13 players or make their goal smaller than the opposition's

The lask of self-awareness from Tebas is astonishing mate. A Real Madrid fan complaining about state aid is laughably ironic, and even more so when RM have received money from none other than Abu Dhabi to redevelop their stadium:lol:

The assumption amongst some City fans is that Barca are getting a little jumpy about Messi's contract situation and perhaps are worried that City might come in for him?

The sense of entitlement of these La Liga cnuts is ridiculous.

Good. People may say it's sour grapes, but so what. Real Madrid didn't moan when we outbid them for Pogba and paid a record fee.

Fact is these state owned football clubs need reigning in.

Yes they received those ban, even Chelsea received and it was more to do with poaching young talents illegally.

My point is barca and real have been acting like babies because they couldn't get their toys. Perez refusing to sell us morata because they didn't get de gea was unprofessional. Morata is a gentleman who didn't make fuss of it , any other player could have just torn apart real and perez with that kind of behaviour. Barca is same, all these years rhey have been tapping players but now suddenly when one of their players is tapped they feel threatened.

Like I said I am no city or psg lover , and ffp should be made stronger but I can't blindly back these spanish clubs when all these years they have done some shady deals and just because now they could not dominate the transfer market they are crying. Feck them I say.

Former school-yard bully upset because new, bigger bully is being mean. Waaaa.

Unless UEFA is going to grow a pair and introduce a wage cap, this whole thing is pointless. UEFA likes money, so it's never going to say no to anyone.

No way UEFA would kick them out of the CL I don't think. Maybe a caution of some sort about future similar breaches in FFP. Like it or not, PSG are a massive spectacle in CL now. Whether that results in winning it, I don't know, but with their front line they're sure to get plenty of viewers eager to watch them. City maybe not as much, but if they don't do PSG they can't do City.

Yeah I also find it a bit amusing that Real and Barcelona feel like they can lecture other clubs how to conduct your business in the transfer market ethically but they might still be correct in this particular case.
