Manchester United 4:0 Everton

Post-match discussion

Sun, 17 September 2017

I was very disappointed with a lot of the game, we looked like the ones who had been playing on Thursday. Rashford looked hungover, Lukaku looked nervous against his former team. But I thought Lingard did well when he came on and offered more defensive support, Fellaini pressed well and look ok in the midfield but simply doesn't offer what Pogba does. I think we also kept the ball better but just looked slow in our passing. After the 80th minute though Lukaku seemed to come to life and what was a poor game for him now looks pretty decent grabbing a goal and an assist.

And what a fecking goal from Valenica, that will take some beating for our goal of the year.

Why all the Lingard hate? He missed a half chance in the box, won free kicks, def flick for Rom's goal, great movement and link up before Martial's PK, should have been awarded a PK himself when Williams came across his body in the box.

Lingard was everywhere today when Rashford wasn't. Let's just be honest.

Jammy performance and Everton made the game ugly with 5 across the back. United left us wanting for much more throughout the match but then came up aces when Everton tried to really make it a match finally going forward. United have a great counter attack to the side now. Good subs by Jose.

I know the chances are so slim it's not even worth considering, but what if 2 sides finished the season with identical records, points, wins goals? Is there a rule or nah?

It would probably go down to head to heads. Whichever team took the most points off the other would win it. If both matches were drawn 0-0 then feck knows :D

Totally undeserved scoreline. We were terrible in attack.
Sorry but what's wrong with you? We won against Everton - just celebrate.

Who cares if it is undeserved? Have we got three points everytime we deserved it last season?

Don't think we played badly, we just seemed to really not want to try that second half for whatever reason. Nice to see that we've developed a taste for blood when we smell it though

Madness.

I stand by my opinion that some of our attackers are lacking guile in the final third, but we are more ruthless than last season in putting away our chances and punishing mistakes. I'll take that, because it could be very important in winning games against teams where we are second best. But we do need some upgrades in attack next summer.

Weird game. Anyway, big feck you to Koeman for mouthing off in the past. Love that we gave them a bigger thrashing than Chelsea, Spurs and Atalanta.

Upgrade on an attack that has delivered 19 goals in 6 matches this season?

That will be incredible. :)

That second half was shocking but these were the games we would have conceded last season and instead we weathered it and then scored the second that killed them.

Matic was outstanding again.

In fairness we seen these under SAF. We aren't far but you can see the lack of creativity without Pogs. Also I'm still not convinced by the defence partnership, there is no football brain in there and I felt we needed a experienced 34/35 CB to help. We have lots of much of a muchness at CB.

The only dire performance was from some of our fans moaning in the match day forum.

The players managed the game well and never really to up gear, Jose made good subs and we got the 3 pts and goals for the GD. Good day all round

Miki was being Miki today, Mata again like he should be playing Under 5's, Rashford rubbish.... and thats pretty much our attack done.

If we wanted to change the game earlier we should have made the Martial, Lingard, Hererra subs instead of letting the game drift along and invite pressure.

Agreed.

If terrible performances start to turn into 4-0 wins, I'm not sure anyone can stop United. City Shmity, United will walk the league.

Also, I am really surprised by the extreme criticism on this thread. We finished 6th last season and won against a team that have troubled us in the past. Why can't be celebrate on the post match thread?

Some people will moan even if we won 6-0.

Somehow I feel that anything beyond a total domination performance will illicit this sort of a response from this place. As for me, I am enjoying this season and am extremely happy.

Even if we dominate the opponent, the moaners will complain that our opponents didn't play well. They'll moan, no matter what.

I too am enjoying this season, especially as we are hammering teams.

One of these days a team is going to get seriously spanked. Maybe 7-8 goals.

Give over! We were hanging by our bollocks in the second half. Any moaning was more than justified today!

Great win but today shows why we cant rely on Fellaini from the off. Herrera has to be a starter with Pogba.

You saw how we started to get some control back after Herrera came on. A must going forward.

I honestly can't figure out what Fellaini did wrong today. He broke up Everton's game countless times (including the one that led to the second goal), his passing was almost flawless and pushed forward at the right time.

Good result. Most important thing right now is to build momentum and gather confidence. Thought Everton played well and gave us a good match. Matic outstanding, Valencia, Young very good

We started and ended the game really really well. But it was a dire performance, all things considered. Fellaini was disappointing today.
Very impressive performance from Matic though, pretty much a one man midfield the whole game.

7 in 7 for Lukaku now. If Mikhi, Mata and Martial create chances for him, he'll be scoring bucket loads of goals.

Also that thunderstrike from Valencia !

Have no idea how we won that 4-0 but will take it all day long. Players looked jaded and the CC game in midweek has come at a great time to rest a few players.

Matic was outstanding again. Of course Pogba is a massive miss, but I feel a lot less nervous knowing he is in front of the back 4. Our play in the final 3rd was wasteful up to the last 10 minutes. Rashford left Young exposed too often and Everton targetted him all day and but for DDG amd woeful Everton finishing we could easily have been in trouble.

All said and done, top (joint) of the league, and winning games that we would've drawn last season

Papering over the cracks. Terrible performance. Why Jose doesn't bring on Martial earlier is mind-boggling.

We won 4-0...so Jose was right.
Most managers would kill to be scoring 3 or 4 goals every league game.

What lunacy allows Lingard to come on before Martial? For the moment, I thought Martial was injured. I don't understand what Lingard brings to the team.

Mourinho should stop fecking around and close the game quickly.

You don't understand much about football tactics if you didn't see the impact Lingard brought today. I'm sorry, that's just fact. Martial wouldn't have had the impact without Lingard. Period.

Matic my MoM, good and solid from start to finish, not great but consistently good. That run from Martial when he won the penalty and Valencia's wonder goal were the highlights for me. More than happy with the win

Very frustrating game to watch, but when we were up against tired defenders we put them to the sword.
I do love it when Martial comes on against tired defenders. They basically crap themselves.

On a separate note, Everton's GK is perhaps the worst GK I have seen play at OT in the last few years.
Normally I see GKs put in MOTM performances against us, but this guy looked like he was new to goal keeping.
He conceded 4 goals today. 3 goals against Atalanta. That's 7 goals conceded in 3 days. And I'm willing to bet he'd conceded plenty before then. EDIT: Yes, he conceded 3 goals in the match before Atalanta. That's 10 goals conceded in 1 week.
If Koeman values his job, he'll bench him, otherwise he may be the next to get chop.
Didn't think it was Pickford in goal for Everton in the EL.

Hanging by our bollocks because our opponent had a few chances god forbid

Oh for the glory days where our opponents didnt have a shot and we scored from every opportunity eh

Oh and by the way what is with Lukaku taking free kicks. That's even worse than Jones taking corners.

Well...first win for Jose over Koeman....

TBH, I don't care how we do it. If Lukaku had stuck that chance in I think the whole match would have been different. He didn't, all great players miss chances which is fair enough, but we kept plugging away. Mourinho will know we weren't great but surely will be pleased with the attitude. We would never have won this last season.

Rashford had a bad day at the office, but he's young. Matic is probably going to be one of Jose's most important signings.

Matic again MOM. What a colossal signing. Jose played Fellaini as the second DM in a 4231, which is not his best position. Should have allowed him to play more forward, ala how Pogba plays in a 2 with Matic, which is Fellaini's strength. He didn't offer any threat in the opposing box at all, which was a disappointment.

Thought Lukaku was poor today, did get a slop goal at the end, but wasn't impressed with him overall, just didn't offer much and missed a sitter in the first half.

Good result though, and the 3 goals at the end obviously great for GD. The 4-0 scoreline flatters United quite a bit though. Everton was in this game right up unitl the 84th minute.

I only was able to start watching it for the last 10 min or so...and boy was it nice. You can thank me.

The last 10 minutes were highly enjoyable.
I didn't want the match to end. Another 10 minutes and we'd probably have scored another 2.

Average performance. Great result. Matic and De Gea were our best players today. De Gea had a pretty much perfect game. Martial with a brilliant sub appearance as well.

I honestly can't figure out what Fellaini did wrong today. He broke up Everton's game countless times (including the one that led to the second goal), his passing was almost flawless and pushed forward at the right time.
He lacks the ability to control games, its not a bad thing because he offers something different. But you saw in the second half how he couldnt get hold of the ball and most of the good things he did were tackles and interceptions. Herrera shows for the ball and trys to bring people into play which is what we need.

With Pogbas injury i think we need to stick with a 3. That said i get the feeling Jose told the team to sit back because Everton were playing 5 at the back

Exactly. After three very frustrating seasons and a cautiously promising one, we have finally started one so strongly and look very good. From here, I would say that we are nailed on to challenge from the title.

Moaning on this thread really sucks the joy out of an amazing win.

Scoreline is great. Our performance was not. If we play like this going forward we won't be close to challenging for the league.

Play like what, winning 4-0. We'll definitely be in with a chance of the league. League winning performances often revolve around tumescent last minute 1-0 wins. Ours was anything but that. Yes we got lucky with a worldly from Valencia, but part of us controlling after that was to open up the eventual space that led to the avalanche.

Don't get me wrong I do see some of your points, but so far this season United have been vintage. Only blip is a game we should have won against Stoke and was still a draw.

You literally can't ask for better than this. The transition from the crap served up by LVG is massive
