Hindsight: How are the Players that 'almost' joined United this Summer faring? Any regrets?

Sorry, I don't get this?

He's referring to Koeman's post match press conference yesterday, where he stated something along the lines of not being impressed by United's 4-0 win. Then he went on some tyrade about how spending £140m on 8 new players shouldn't come with any expectations and people should be more realistic about Everton's league chances.

At one point or another during the just closed transfer window, there were reports linking some players to United during the summer. The ones that really stood out and could have been legitimate reports included:

  • Griezmann
  • Morata
  • Dier
  • Rose
  • Perisic
  • James Rodriguez
  • Renato Sanchez
  • Fabinho
  • Semido
  • Aurier
  • Michael Keane

How are these players faring now? Is there anyone we goofed by not buying? Is there anyone that represents a dodged bullet?
None really. We need a RW and a LB. Griezmann would be brilliant but it would still leave our RW position weak. Ideally, Mendy and Dembele would have made our squad complete. Next season, we need to just strengthen these two positions and we'll be set.

enough non EU players in our team. I rather have an English player to replace Carrick.
I'd rather we select them on ability. There aren't any English midfielders good enough to replace Carrick.

I'd have loved Rose and Aurier, to strong attacking fullbacks.
Nobody tell Glaston though...:annoyed:

Only one we seemed to be regretting and that too considering his form is Perisic so far which is highly amusing considering the reaction on here by people who didn't saw him play and didn't wanted him just because of his age. Aurier is far too early to count but Valencia has been great.
We generally got lucky on Keane and Dier.

Perisic's early form is of a 45-50m player tbf

Wait till the end of season, martial and rashford have been good for us.

Semedo and Rose for me are the big misses.

Nice thread @GM K

personally I wish we had gotten Fabinho. Very capable CM and I think Matic Fabinho Pogba is about a complimentary midfield 3 as we could get. Plus, he can easily cover right back where we are a little light.

I'm happy we didn't get Perisic in the end up because I think both martial and Rashford would have suffered, and both have looked amazing at times this season. The system we are playing is working (regardless of what others would have you believe) and perisic would have changed that. With Perisic in the squad I think we win those 3 games 1 or 2-0 instead of 4.

Griezmann will likely be here in 2018 so it's not really a loss right now.

I had no idea we were linked with semedo but from what I've seen at Barca he would have been great here. Looks like he'll turn into Kyle walker but with actual footballing ability.

Thanks @Arbitrium :)

  • Griezmann - Would have been a dream signing.
  • Morata - Good but I'd take Lukaku over him any day. We made the right choice.
  • Dier - Decent but Matic is so much better. Again, right choice.
  • Rose - He would have absolutely improved us but I think the real Miss at LB was Benjamin Mendy.
  • Perisic - A pacey old fashioned winger that can cross. We should have gone all out to get him once we knew Griezmann wasn't happening. Still gutted this didn't happen.
  • James Rodriguez - He's good but not sure if he's what we need.
  • Renato Sanchez - Would have been an interesting signing for the future but not as a loan deal.
  • Fabinho - Would have had him as a RB but as a CDM I think Matic was who we needed.
  • Semido - We needed a RB but my first choice was Aurier.
  • Aurier - This was a big miss IMO. If we signed Aurier and Mendy for the fullback spots, we would be unstoppable this season.
  • Michael Keane - Dont rate him. A decent English player for a midtable club. Not United standard. Lindelof has more potential.

I guess it should be compared to what we'll get next summer. If we've saved the money for Perisic now (Who is doing great), but will get Griezmann or a huge player next summer then yeah that's fine.

Semedo/Perisic the only ones I've seen perform this year so far

Maybe we can splurge on Dier or that Chelsea lad? Hijack Chelsea again. Andreas Pereira is enough for me as he is a home grown player.

To be honest i'm surprised at the number of people who are giving flat out No's to Semedo. I honestly think he could go on to be world class in the future.

I dunno about this summer, but it looks like we dodged a bullet with Renato Sanchez from two summers ago.

Plenty of full backs we missed out on, Mendy, Semedo, Aurier, even Kolasinac on a free. Not too bothered about the likes of Perisic and especially Keane who is just another average English centre back.

The Keane lad just made a step up from Burnley, he deserves more time before we can decide him as average.

No excuse one mentioned Ronaldo? He is the most almost to join us. I meant his decision was irreversible :wenger:

Tnx, didn't know that, Im out of my country so except the games, I can't dedicate my attention to anything else from the football world.

  • Griezmann- Would have been a great signing, always next season
  • Morata - Lukaku is better
  • Dier - Matic has been traffic so no regrets
  • Rose - Not played in 8 months? Let's see how he is when he returns
  • Perisic - Started the s a son like a house on fire, but Martial and Rashford have rotated nicely on the left
  • James Rodriguez - Luxury player
  • Renato Sanchez - Would have been a decent loan buy, now more so with Pogba's injury
  • Fabinho - Same as Dier
  • Semedo - We could have done with an attacking RB to compete with Valencia
  • Aurier - Same as semedo
  • Michael Keane - He's ok, Lindelof I expect will turn out to be better

So what price was perisic worth in this market? Why should we bid more?

Not more than 35 m tops. Doesnt mean we are taking advantage to their situation, We are bidding for the player we need and is a fair price.
In the crazy market prices I think 48 mill would have been a fair price. We bid 30 because thats what they needed to beat ffp and we thought we could have gotten him on the cheap.

48 m for a 28 year old touchline hugger winger with workrate and few good crosses but without creaativity, who'll be a rotation and bench option? Not at all.

City signed bernardo silva for 43 m and he's 22 and was very important player for monaco in their ucl campaign and title run last year , liverpool got sadio mane for 34 m last year who's 24 and a better effective player. Even juventus got a younger fernando berardeshi for 40 m euros which is a whole lot less than quoted for perisic.

What would justify 48 m pounds for perisic? Nothing, it was a price for the club to keep him. If any other club would be intrested in perisic the price would have been less.

That last bit doesn't make sense. They wanted 48 million to sell but would accept less if more team's where in for him???
