Funny how it has become a bit of a habit for Martial to not get rewarded for his MOTM performances in previous games.
This brings me back to West Ham last season where he didn't feature at all despite coming off a MOTM performance against Boro the previous game.
Martial is literally the only player in our squad who's had some of his good performances or form not get rewarded, everyone else getting mostly their fair due if they deliver in previous game. Heck even Fellaini has been rewarded with a starting spot over Herrera because of his showing in previous games. Same happens with Lingard if he comes off a great performance, basically everyone else get rewarded on the back of good performance beside Martial who doesn't always get his fair due.
He'll play in the CL, it doesn't matter how well or bad he plays, something is certain is that he's not starting the palace game. Mou asks for good attitude and being happy but he has to help the lad and make him feel valuable, his ridiculous management of the kid is down right annoying.
Of course this thread will be flooded wi th excuses such as how Martial doesn't work hard, attitude etc despite those reasons being stretches.

We knew that before today's game tbh. Just as we knew Romero would start against Burton. I think we know it's likely Rashford will start next weekend though.
I don't think it can be argued that it seems near on impossible for him to earn the status of Rashford, Mkhitaryan or Mata. He certainly hasn't been the weakest performer, that much has been obvious. Eventually though, he will be, as he can't be expected to keep matching what they do in 70-90 minutes in 15.

We were crying out for long periods during the 2nd half for someone alongside Lukaku who can hold the ball up and give the defenders something to think about, and Jose went defensive with first Herrera and then Smalling. By the time of the 3rd sub it was too late and they were already having all the momentum.
Rashford can run, but offensively he's just not very good from that LW position and defenders have been dealing with him with ease the last few league games.

Mkhi/Rashford I can still understand as both of them have been excellently if we see final contribution. Mata is the one I don't get. He hasn't been impressive at all. It's come at a stage where I think I might prefer Lingard in front of him.
You know damn well had Martial put in a quiet performance like Rashford today, you'd be slating him and saying he isn't doing enough to be in the team.

Starting against CSKA means nothing, he was going to play in it regardless. At this stage in the CL in the group stage with our draw, CSKA is pretty comparable to a easy cup game thus he can be thrown in from the start.
The issue here is that he rightly need to be trusted with more responsibility and be played in more important fixtures.
What's the point of being a starter in the CSKA game then being benched in the next PL game regardless of his performances. His start in the PL are quite telling especially compared to Rashford who is truStedham to start games regardless of his performances. We both know that Rashford will start the palace game regardless of what happens in Moscow or today. It is what it is.
How long are we going to keep telling ourselves this shit though, playing attacking players for their 'workrate' or defensive ability is somehow better better than playing a better attacking player who might help in creating or scoring goals. No wonder we keep getting overrun by teams like S'ton and Everton before the fell apart in the 85th minute. For sure. Not much that can be done about it other than sack Mourinho and that'd be ridiculous. Managers have their preferences. If our results are affected he might change things up but I can't see both Martial and Rashford starting together regularly, so will be Rashford more often than not.

I thought we might go 3-5-2 when Smalling came on. Which would have suited Martial coming on for Rashford adding in fresh legs. But in the end we went 5-4-1 weirdly and it might not have made any sense to bring on Martial then I suppose.
I really don't understand why they can't play together. Jose's forced this problem on himself by pushing out lineups where only one plays. People thought City had a similar problem with Aguero/Jesus until it turned out that two prodigiously talented attacking players could play alongside each other just fine.
Didn't make much sense to bring him on in the second half as the game got very difficult and all we needed were defensive reinforcements. Rashford didn't do much in attack, but he covered for Young well enough, so replacing him with Martial would have been a needless defensive risk.
That being said, Rashford hasn't done enough in the past few games on the left to keep starting ahead of Martial, so I'd expect the latter to get a start against CSKA Moscow and even keep his place in the side if he performs. Can't just keep dropping him for Rashford just because it's a league game.

That's just not going to happen. The rotation has clearly been established.
What I think is undoubted, is Rashford is 100% not a better option on the left. There may be a debate to some about who is the bigger talent, but the period Rashford really made a case for himself was as a striker, in both his first and at the end of his second season.

It's clear Rashford offers more defensively and that's the reason Mourinho plays him ahead. It even made sense to not make a change today. But, also, Martial did deserve much more playing time this season as we had games where there wasn't so much more pressure.
So, hope that Martial will get few starts and more playing time in the games to follow. Last season he didn't offer enough. This one, he has every right to be more on the pitch.

I think they can play together fine, just Mourinho prefers to play one at a time and if both start then the only pacy option on the bench would be Lingard which isn't really enough.
Half of the caf are lapping the "look at all this defensive work this attacking player is doing" though. Because they have invested themselves too much into the new-ish manager and have probably warrior'd through too many debates on the internetz to defend him that they can't pull out anymore. Too far in.

Pretty much how I feel, our most exciting attacker is sitting on the bench because defensive workrate in a wide man is more important to the manager than creating.
We are not a defensive team. And Martial doesn't have to only play in easy games with no pressure. He has stepped up many times in pressure games for us.
He isn't a defender though. He might score you a goal, if that's what you want.
That's all nice and true. Would like to see the same when Martial has a great attacking game or has a great attacking impact.
