I don't have my tin-foil hat on when saying this: that ref has to be investigated. His decisions were so obvious on favoring Sth, even Stevie Wonder would notice it.

I was most annoyed with the penalty we didn't get. They basically had Fellainis shirt for so long time and then they got the freekick. Although that often happens sadly.

I don't really recall that. I do remember Long just put his stud on Fellaini's calf, and no yellow. Another one when Fellaini got the ball to start counter, and he was tackled; but no yellow card. Then Young and Valencia got their yellows for similar fouls. There are some other really questionable yellows and decisions.

Did anyone catch Jose making the w*nker gesture at the ref or fourth official after he was sent off? Would make a great gif.

Great win away, never been an easy olace for us to go. Thought we need to be more clinical though if we are going to play like this away from home because sooner or later it will cost us.

We are doing well without Pogba getting crucial points, Oh and I thiught the ref was an absoloute bell.End of the game was a bit nervy and I dont understand why Jose got sent off.

we were under serious pressure but I didn't feel that Southampton would score

disappointed in that second half and Lukaku, Rashford, Mhiki, Mata and Fellaini offered nothing in an attacking sense

we had no real outlet and I do wonder about the character of the team in not being able to sit in and compete

Maybe Martial for Lukaku would have made s difference but I'm not sure..... maybe we just caught a Southampton team giving it all on a good day

given how poor our attacking players were and our lack of control I think I actually understand why we decided to play a 6-3-1 in effect

Happy with the win. I was disappointed with the 2nd half obviously but thankfully our defense were very solid, especially Jones. Our midfield really couldn't keep up this match and it felt like So'ton were running around Fellaini and Matic but they couldn't get close than 25 yards.

Herrera was good and solified the team when he came on. Should have scored more than one, not clinical enough.

I thought the refs were poor today. Yellow cards thrown around for nothing, players getting fouled but getting called as having fouled, sending Mourinho off for nothing. Glad all that didn't matter in the end.

Good win. Very happy with the tactic of Mourinho to shut up shop in the second half, since they had us in midfield. It was kind of damage limitation without Pogba.

Mark of champions.
Good job mou.
Fine defensive display.
MoM Jones, almost did that crawling on the floor header thingy again.

Poor peforamance but 3pts was vital. Clean sheet, job done. It didn't exactly bode well for tough away games coming up, but I trust Jose to work it to those games. Very crucial 3pts.

We should've brought in Lingard and Martial earlier to stretch the game and bring the team forward. They had a make shift right back for the last 10 minutes or so. Martial would've settled the game for us.

You could well be right and it's the action most would have liked seen happen (including myself) but you never know, all it takes is one player being in a different position, for one of their balls in, than smalling was or others because he was on the pitch and they might have equalized. Jose will tend to trust defence first and he got the 3 points so...

Teams are clearly much much better than in the SAF years, we're playing like we have the fear factor and if we're on the razor's edge then it only takes one slip up. I don't think Jose has the right mentality drilled into this squad as a group yet, it takes time. Loved how much it meant to Lukaku to get the three points though.

Three points are the most important and I am not going to complain till we're getting these points. But if this comes back to bite us back in a future game, Jose should rightly be criticized for it.

3 points.

We already have wins against West Ham(H), Everton(H) and Southampton(A). All of the corresponding fixtures we drew last season.
So already a huge difference to last year. Brilliant!
Those draws last year killed any title hopes, not to mention a top 4 finish.

Thought there would be no chance of 3 points after the Smalling sub but proven wrong. We are certainly mentally strong. The performance wasn't good at all but over a season you will have more than one game like this, taking 3 points when playing like this is important, doesn't matter how many defenders you have on. Mourinho just knows how to win and you can see the methods he uses clearly, it's all purely about getting the maximum points.

I think it was a good performance from defensive and mental strength stand points.
The thing is that some games are just simply tough. That game was a good example. But our boys dug in, held their positions and got the three points.

Had to listen on the radio today, worst second half to listen to for ages, it sounded almost as if we didn't get a kick after the second half started? Southampton seemed to be coming at us in waves, my pace-maker was working overtime! Still three points, sweated and strained for!

I watched that game again. The second half was not as bad as many claim. We certainly did not dominate and were sloppy at times but apart from having greater possession, Southampton did not really play us out of the park like many claim. We played solidly in defensive terms and could have killed off the game if we took our chances.

Lost midfield battle and ball retention up top was poor. Lukaku and Rashford have no teamwork and so long it continues we will never be the force we hope to be. Matic looked exposed with Pogba absence. Makes me think whether it was Pogba shielding him or him covering Pogba in previous many games.

So riddle me this.....how is this a terrible performance if
A) we won- 3 points
B) clean sheet
C) defensively brilliant display
D) we played to the managers tactics - he knew Southampton can't score for toffee. So shut up shop. How can u blame the players? They did their job well.

Glad to get out of there with the three points. Not a vintage display, but nothing wrong with winning ugly from time to time. It's a hallmark of good teams to win games when not playing particularly well. On to the next one.

That's what I got from the game, although we should of done more second half in an attacking sense, just Jose knows how solid the back 4 is for us and he can rely on them to shut Southampton out.

Yes, I do agree with what you mentioned. However, we played bad in general.
A) There was one moment of genius by Lukaku where we scored
B) We were bombarded by a Southampton team that hasn't played well this season. In the second half, it almost seemed like we were a man down
C) Games like these show that we were lacking in creativity with a midfield of Fellaini and Matic which were too slow to attack.
D) Pogba's absence was felt. Fellaini is at his best coming off the bench than starting a game for us
E) Mhiki needs to do a lot better with creating opportunities for Lukaku
F) Our defense wasn't the best today, it's just Southampton were really bad at putting away the chances they created. It could have ended being 1-1
G) The fact that Mourinho got sent to the stands is evident alone how frustrated he was which let to him losing his cool.

So I'm glad we won and didn't concede but this scoreline looks a lot better facing a rampant City or a Chelsea than facing a weak team. We need to keep scoring especially since City are just obliterating every side in the last 4 games to keep pace. At the end of the day, we as United fans always strive for better performances from the team.

I thought this was a decent win, by no means faultless but overall a deserved win nonetheless IMO.

Controlled first half and strong in defense after the break.

A gritty, tough 3 points gained and I ‘am happy.

I get the feeling if we were playing one of the top four teams we would be able to raise the game a bit. we may not have won as handsomely as Spurs, Man City and Chelsea but this was a differtant type of win. The type that may ask questions of others.

Thankfully City are at Chelsea next so a chance for us to redress the GD issue. And obviously one of them will drop points. Hoping for a Chelski win on this occasion.

I can only hope for a draw. That's the best outcome - preferably a high scoring draw so that other teams can identify the defensive weaknesses of both sides.

There cant be a better result so early on in the season when there is so much more football to be played.

Not really that different from our other away performances .Obviously we defended better that at Stoke and didn't take our chances as well as at Swansea and we did have chances .Could easily have been a 0-3 to us.
Clearly we can do better but the bottom line is 3 away points.
Well done lads.

These are the games that we were drawing last season. Not a great performance but 3 points. Pogba missed badly. We should have a player to fill in for him when he is out but we have not got one.

3 points and a type of win I think we needed. We are not going to win every team 4-0.

Marouane Fellaini is one of last remaining honest footballers. I cannot remember a time when he feigned an injury or being hurt in a United jersey.

Have to respectfully disagree. A draw is not going to affect City's goal difference. Yes there is more football to be played but it's all about points on the board. You can't tell me that the best outcome is not being 3 points clear at the top, surely??

Plus the psychological impact of a defeat to City. I'd rather see a 1 in City's losses column than a 2 in the draws. If we could hammer Palace at home and get another 4-0 victory, that would give us a cushion for the Liverpool game, should the worst happen.

A draw is the best result for both Chelsea and City but not for United.

Would've been nice if Herrera hadn't missed that clear chance on goal. Would've improved our 'Goals from different players' stat. Also would've done his confidence loads of good.

Had so much time on the ball to slot it in. Sad miss.

Yep, would also have changed the narrative from 'skin of the teeth' to 'perfect away smash and grab'...silly Ander!

I'll take any result other than a City win. But, at this stage of the season, between 3 points ahead of City and Chelsea, and 2 points from City and 5 points from Chelsea - I'll take the latter. Plus, you are ignoring the impact of the psychological impact of a win for Chelsea. (all of this is moot if we don't put crystal palace to the sword like we should.)

We should have subbed off Rashford for Martial and mata for Lingard with Fellaini for Herrera much sooner. I really hate watching us go 5 at the back and hang on to a lead when we're offering nothing going forward.

I don't think Fellaini should be starting in a midfield 2, and he's woeful as a central mid with defensive responsibility. As much as I love his attitude and I think he makes a great plan B in an attacking sense this game emphasised something i've noticed about his game for a while now. Namely, that he has absolutely no idea where to stand to intercept a pass, he's very much an anti-carrick in that the game just passes him by, people run by him because he's normally in the wrong position and just gets ghosted. That's half the reason you see him doing his lumbering sprint towards the guy with the ball, because he doesn't have the positional intelligence to block runners or anticipate where the pass might be played.

My problem is not the fact that we were put under pressure and had to spend 45 mins defending against fecking Southampton, its the fact the idea of taking advantage of their pressure and hitting them on the counter seems alien to our manager. He just wanted to fill the team with defenders/defensive players and hold on, hoofing the ball out with gusto like we're Stoke. Like are we that poor that we can't make a single attacking sub, or attempt hitting Southampton on the break? People comparing this shit to the Fergie conveniently forget that no matter how shit we were, no matter how bad we were being overun, there was ALWAYS a plan to take advantage, hit them, then go back to being shite. There's no such thing here, just throwing defenders everywhere and hoofing and looking like a bottom table team. Against a team that has been beaten on the same ground by worse teams. Also nobody remembers we were very poor against Everton too 2nd half, because they collapsed in the 85th minute and we put 4 past them so we were amazing. Do people feel we are going to keep up these dire performances against shite teams all season and get away with it? People make it sound like the whole going defensive team is some sort of masterplan, truth simply is, we go defensive because these teams outplay us in every way. Can't string two passes together, cant't pass out from the back, can't counter, eventually just resorting to hoofall, with a team that costs half a billion. I simply can't bring myself to commend performances like these like some people are.
