Ander Herrera vs N'golo Kanté | Thread has gone well

It does as the responsibility is shared by his midfield partner in Matic who is also a defensive monster, that's why his defensive stats i.e., number of tackles won and number of interceptions aren't as high as they were are Leicester last season. I said in the post what he does, he has a great engine so he breaks up the play a lot, he either passes the ball forward quickly or breaks forward himself. His role is quite limited but he does it efficiently at a very high level.
.

Pogba won more tackles per 90 mins than Matic.

Also like few others said if the defensive duty is shared so much then he should be doing lot better offensively isn't it?

Christ. You win one final against a bunch of kids and suddenly herrera, and even fecking Fellaini, are the best around at what they do. Sure, your 6th place midfield is awesome. They've had no problems all season.

You've turned into a really awful poster lately.

Literally nothing to say other than sniping at United.

Very boring.

Nice to see that the Barney-esque meltdown has started for @B20 . We all know how that ends.

In fairness, Herrera may have won man of match in the Europa League final but Kante had a far bigger influence for the winners of the FA Cup. He was the key man for both goals.

People want a Carrick replacement and competition for Herrera. Not a direct Herrera replacement. Go and read the comments before you jump to conclusions.

As for Kante struggling, a player can perform well in HIS role even if a team is struggling. Kante was bang average at the start of the season. Only when Matic was introduced as his partner that he was able to do his defensive work well.

As for the conjecture that Kante would do as well as Herrera here, there is nothing to back that especially seeing how he struggled partnering Fabregas in midfield.

People have wanted Carrick's replacement for years and he isn't first choice for us anymore. We've played 4231 for majority of this season, going into next season assuming we sign Griezmann/James and another forward, that is #10 and #9 role fulfilled with 2 of Mata/Martial/Mkhitaryan/Lingard on wings. That leaves us with 2 players to form the midfield, who do you think people want to play alongside Pogba in a midfield 2? Clue, not Herrera.

I don't cherry pick 6 games at the start of season where entire Chelsea team was struggling to prove my point and are players not allowed to go on a poor run of form? Dunno where you are getting he struggled in midfield with Fabregas, Matic-Kante has been Conte's preferred midfield from very beginning. Fabregas played a total of 89 mins in Chelsea's first six games and after putting in a stinker of a performance at Emirates he was dropped and Matic was brought back in. Also Conte switched to 343 and rest is history.

I have nothing to backup? :wenger: You're making stuff up by saying he struggled with Fabregas when he was never in the side. I have Leicesters entire season of 2015/16 to back up my arguments.

Anyways this is my last post on this topic, this place has a long history of getting carried away after players hit a good run of form or have a good season. Smalling is best CB in the league, Shaw is best LB in the league, Januzaj is going to be Ballon d'Or contender, Fletcher is World Class, Chicharito is World Class, Wouldn't swap Martial for Messi etc. etc. Herrera is latest in a long line of players who have been extremely over hyped by the supporters. He is a good player and someone who I like a lot and want him to be the next Captain but he's extremely overrated on this board.

As opposed to you who is the picture of objectivity I would suppose.

Herrera is the better footballer. Kante is limited and excels in specific areas.

Think he offers more. He breaks up play and can offer something offensively as well assist wise. Kante looks good when everything is going swimmingly.

Herrera is more technically proficient, clearly. But he's not the type of player who can dominant a midfield contest. He just good at everything, without being great at anything. He's so likable and has such heart, but there's a reason Kante has been in the POTY discussions the last two years. He's been exceptional, often doing the work of two players.

He's not has the best season so far, and today was horrible. But lord knows I've seen Herrera have some absolute stinkers. It just seems now that it's so hip to start being contrarian on Kante, but if given the choice of one midfielder to add to the United squad from any PL club, the two at the top of my list would be KBD and Kante.

Herrera isn't even good enough to be a starter for United IMO.

Herrera will be a starter in certain games for a certain job, Liverpool, Chelsea, City, Spurs. Think Kante looked better because of Matic. We will need to see how Chelsea progress this year. It all depends how long Morata is out, because they looked clueless without him. Kante looks fabulous in a well oiled machine. Chelsea have looked a bit rusty this season.

Yes he will start those games. But imagine starting those games with a midfield 3 of Matic, Kante and Pogba. That's much, much better.

Kante was imperious for Leicester. While last season was not as impressive although still very good, why do people on here seem to judge Kante after the Leicester season?

So was Danny Drinkwater carrying him at Leicester?

I think it helps if you have a good partner. That is the same for anyone. Bakayoko is new to the league and is young, so his form might suffer for it. They might have been better partnering him with Drinkwater again. I think he is injured isn't he. Let Bakayoko get used to our league.

They have generally been good together this season. People are really overracting because of a 1-0 loss to a really good City side. They just beat Atletico away like a few days ago.

Kante's numbers have improved across the board this season compared to last now that Bakayoko is partnering him. If anything, having a mobile partner beside him has unleashed him to a greater extent; he's averaging more defensive actions this year than last and Bakayoko is compared to Matic as well.

His passing has improved considerably since he arrived but there is still room to grow there, especially as he seems likely to find himself in more advanced areas in a 3-5-2 more frequently. Against City today he was excellent defensively as per usual, but poorer going forward than he had been against Atletico, where he and Bakayoko totally dominated the midfield going forwards and backwards:

Probably one of their worst players today. Gave the ball away time and time again.

Bit harsh IMO. Willian and Alonso were the two worst players by some distance I thought. Kante wasn't great going forward but was brilliant tracking back; we would have conceded far more than 1 goal without the work he was doing on Silva and KdB.

I personally think they're both rather limited in attack. Herrera possesses more technique and graft, whereas Kante is better defensively(despite Herrera's great work here). I don't think Kante could play as a holding midfielder like Herrera did at times last season. Kante's a better 'carrier' of the ball.

Pretty close. I think they're both at a relatively similar level IMO. A tier or so below 'world class'.

Guess we now have an outright winner!

Herrera is a more complete all round player. It's clear to see.

Please tell me nobody has seriously said Herrera
