Classic case of assuming good passing percentage = good passing.

Smalling has an excellent passing percentage because he refuses to do anything other than pass the ball behind/straight at his teammate. It's just that he kills any sort of momentum that we could gain in possession by passing it behind the player, or even worse, burst forward as if he's going to go through the entire midfield, only to turn back around and pass it behind the player next to him. I'd rather see Bailly take a few more risks (obviously not brainfarts like the one he produced a while ago) and be a bit more proactive in possession.

I never said anything about percentages.

Even Baillys simple passes tonight, he's either underhitting them, or blasting them, and tonight isn't an isolated case. The weighting of his passing is erratic to say the least.

Smalling's passing tonight has been decent, kept it simple when needed, played a good few forward passes through the lines.

OT has become a sarky lot really especially over the past 3 years. It isn't an enjoyable atmosphere anymore at all. It'll only get worse because of examples like above.

The 'trauma' of the last 3 years have made us stop supporting our own players.

Yeah no I am also satisfied with his game, just being unrealistic in terms of what I wished he'd done tonight, but I have no complains for his game. Want to see him get a full game against PL opposition though, this Benfica is a bit poor in current form.

Maybe in the brutal Xmas schedule he'll get a chance to do just that, I hope Jose backs him on time too.
