Cristiano Ronaldo - performances 2017/18

You just know he'll turn up in the CL scoring hattricks left and right.

CL is how many games? Tap in is his bread and butter and even that has abandoned him. Last season he benefited from having teamates just feed him balls whilst he stood in the box and tapped them in and scored 2 offside goals. Outside goals he does zilch now a days.

Even last year he wasnt great up until the last 3 months of the season. Safe to say he is finally leveling down.

Wouldn't call at least half of his goals tap ins in that crazy final ten or so game run... lots of scorchers (three back to back with his left?) and good finishes among them.

The problem I have with arguing about football is that no one ever assumes that for a player to make history, they need luck and a lot of help from his teammates.

And no one is safe from that afaik, even Maradona needed Burruchaga to have the moment of his life or "the hand of god" to lead Argentina to a WC, Messi's trebles are fairly dependant on things like Iniesta scoring a thundercnut (chances are always against that) or the crucial help from Ney/Suarez not wasting chances that other seasons were there but not capitalized (2012 or 2010 comes to my mind).

So, Ronaldo is no exception to me in that regard, and I kinda get annoyed when I hear or read people about how he carried Real to the last UCL title when all of his goals except maybe two are situations where he just needs to be in the area and do a good effort to score (1st goal vs Juve and the rebounded ball vs Atleti defender are the exceptions imo). I know he still has to be there and he does so better than anyone, and shoot between the 3 posts and avoiding the keeper which is no easy task, but still, Real had a team that dominated games in the other 90~ meters of the field and I see Ronaldo just as another cog of that system, not so kind of Maradona vs the world in 1986 situation.

So, it doesn't especially impress me that he scored 10 goals vs Bayern, Atleti and Juve in the last 3 knockout stages when his team had enough power to provide those chances to him in almost perfect situations, I could be more impressed if he just scored 3 goals of those he used to score 5 years ago (blasting through 3 players at the counter and blazing the gk) if those 3 single goals meant three 1-0 results and the title.

I've seen the best from Ronaldo years ago (yeah, and Messi too), what happened last year for example was "father time" putting things in his place, even if he didn't won a single CL in his first 4 years with Real, he definitely deserved it, didn't get it when he was playing out of his world, and he's reaping now that he stood there and gritted his way when other teams were stronger, but I for the love of god can't stand people saying that his last season was his best. I was terrorized of facing him before because he was such a superior player to any defender, he's still top level and maybe the best striker/poacher out there, but it's extreme praise now and belittles what he was doing years ago imo.

1 goal in 50 shots. *** efficiency. Even for Ronaldo's volume shooting this is truly shocking.

Does scoring 6 goals in 22 shots in the Champions League make up for it?

What is an efficient shooting percentage in football? In the NBA it's easier to know but in football I have no idea how you can judge that. He's a volume shooter, if he's not scoring of course it will look bad. I doubt it's any different than when he was in his prime.

Not all ways true.

People beat Ronaldo with this stick because its a fact of the matter and hard to argue against. He hardly is involved in buildup these days and basically just waits for a good delivery, deflection, or a defender switching off -- which to say isn't that bad as he knows how to get into good positions. But when players like Modric, David Silva or even Ngolo Kante are overlooked for awards because the guy scores goals, thats the frustrating part as a fan of football. Its unfair quality players aren't rewarded for their quality, insane consistency, or just general brilliance. I'm not going to go more into it, plenty of people have argued for this matter in the past.

Seems to be going through a bit of a dry patch in La Liga this season but is making up for it in the Champions League. How is he doing tonight as I’m unable to watch the game?

Tap ins against small clubs, definitely deserves awards for this :boring:

Strange early season form for Ronaldo. Abysmal scoring rate in the league, but comfortably topping the goalscoring chart in CL.

Surely this is the first season where he will most likely lose his 1 goal per game average since joining Madrid :(

Already got below 1 per game last season, but as everyone has said here, god bless failing to keep a 1:1 ratio if you end up putting 10 goals on 5 games vs Bayern, Atleti and Juve

Has there been any mention of off-field issues raised in here?

He's got a partner who's just had twins, plus he has another little one from that surrogate, right?

Of course he has people taking care of them, but it wouldn't be a surprise if those off-field distractions are affecting him for the time being.

His demise has been spoken about for the last couple of seasons, and it may well be looming, but this may well be another false dawn, as, even as a lesser version of himself, he is still so far above the chasing pack in a number of attributes that it wouldn't suggest such an extreme drop off as has been in seen in La Liga thus far.

He would still elevate our game by a level or two. I am kinda hoping to see him again in a red shirt, most fans would probably be against it though.

First player to score in all the group stage matches in Champions League.

He looked really good at LW yesterday. He's gonna turn it up for the Champions league knockouts again.
Mr. Champions league

To win 5 Ballon d'Ors while competing with Messi is incredible. Cruyff, Platini and Van Basten won 3 Ballon d'Ors when South American players were not eligible. Ridiculous.

You do know that Cruyff shared an era with Beckenbauer, that Platini joined Juve from Saint-Etienne being 27 y/o and won his first one with 28 and only played two more seasons after his last Ballon d'Or, or that Van Basten basically retired months before his 3rd one being 29, right?.

I doubt Cristiano or Leo would manage to be candidates to the trophy for 10 seasons if they played in the 70's, 80's or even the 90's. First for injury reasons (from boots, to the grass and most importantly medicine) and second because it was harder to assemble super teams when they were subject to the 3 foreigner rules, either you struck gold with a golden generation (like the Germans or Milan with the 3 dutchs) or Real would have a hard time to decide which 2 to keep from Navas, Pepe, Marcelo, Casemiro, Modric, Kroos, Bale, Benzema or James to surround Ronaldo. Same with Pep's Barça if they had to choose 2 foreigners from Alves, Marquez, Abidal, Toure, Eto'o and Henry.

If things go well, we might have a duel between Ronaldo and Messi for even 4 more years, Ibra peaked stat-wise being 34 and with 16 seasons of profesional football on his legs, so I wouldn't discard milking ~3 more years from Ronaldo (15th pro season) being top 3 in the Ballon d'Or.

Ronaldo is a far superior athlete to Platini and Van Basten, no wonder that he can play longer at top level. Not suffering from injuries like Van Basten is part and parcel of him being a superior athlete.

Are you implying that competing with Beckenbauer was more difficult than competing with Messi? OK.

How good you are as an athlete has nothing to do with medicine, Van Basten career came to a premature end for a broken cartilage in his knee that doctors/team failed to treat properly for years (he already played in Milan with pain since he joined from Ajax). You think beasts like Nadal or Ronaldo have managed to prolong their career for more than a decade only because they're great athletes? Without cryotherapty, hyperbaric medicine, stem cells, Platelet-Rich Plasma and god knows what else?. You must be kidding, starting from his heart disease that was treatable (where decades ago it would mean either him retiring, worst performance or even dying on the pitch).

And I'm not implying, we're talking of the freaking Kaiser, not only Cruyff went to an underwhelming Barcelona team those years just at the same time Bayern started dominating Europe, Beckenbauer is a 3 time in a row European Cup winner, World and European champion with Germany and was the captain and star of a team that had his own 70's version of Cristiano Ronaldo on Gerd Müller, people go crazy about Ramos and his scoring numbers for a defender, Beckenbauer as a defender/sweeper scored even more than Ramos. What's hard to believe about Cruyff having a harder time to compete with him than Ronaldo to Messi? He played against juggernauts like the 70's Bayern/West Germany squads with FC Barcelona and the Netherlands, he even lost a WC final against Beckenbauer, who played with guys like Maier, Breitner, Vogts, Mueller or Hoeness.

Messi wouldn't smell a Ballon d'Or if he played for Liverpool (comparison to that 70's Barcelona who won a League and a cup in 5 seasons with Cruyff) with Ronaldo winning European Cups in stacks of three and a WC+ EC with Real and Portugal. So yeah, I think guys like Cruyff did a pretty incredible job of winning 3 Ballon d'Or while sharing his era with Beckenbauer and Müller playing together for Bayern and Germany

You better enjoy lads, he's in decline

Coasted in to his fifth Ballon d'Or and then immediately gets to work on number six. What an animal.

Everyone knows that august - december basically doesn’t count, just taking it easy up until now ;)

He’s been brilliant this game, so good to see him back in good form just in time for the Clasico.

Yep, did what he had to to make sure he could own the CL knockout stages next year and spent the rest of the time lazing around to start his next Ballon d'Or conquest well-rested. Brilliant.

To call his performance today, so far, brilliant seems like a bit of an overstatatement. He’s scored two, ok but one was all alone with the goalie and the other a pretty lucky penalty. To his credit he actually made a great pass to Benzema before the fifth goal. He’s touched the ball 25 times with 5 of those being shots. 10 completed passes all half. If this performance is classified as «brilliant» I’m starting to understand why some people in this thread can’t see that he is on a downward trend. But I guess as long as he scores goals from the insane amount of chances that is created for him each game I guess he’ll win the awards for a couple of more seasons.

Well yes his decline has started since 2 years back, the rest is history.
