That assumes that people always act rationally and optimally. I can easily imagine refs making up their own resistances to time wasting out of proportion to what spectators would think how the game should be managed. These little things happen all over.
Fair enough, it looked like a made up story as refs usually allow subs to be made or when time is wasted when played walks slowly out of field, they usually add lot of time.
We were definitely trying for the sub for a few minutes, so whatever the reason it didn't happen as fast as it could have. The part I struggle with is Oliver telling the bench that's why he didn't let them sub.
If he did do it and actually admitted to it because he felt that was a legitimate move on his part, he needs to go back to the refereeing school bench for the season.
4th Official must have some input to the game stopping & the sub happening surely? Assessing whether the player is correctly kitted-out & ready to come on, for example.
He said that? Did Klopp said that in interview or Times reported that Klopp was told that? If it was direct quotes from Klopp then they should complain to FA, subs in the last min happens all the time.
Only way i can make sense of that is oliver didn't let them make the sub because they were wasting too much time about it, and something was lost in translation...

Big test for Klopp this December though, last year wheels came off during this period. Let's see how they cope this year.
That's what I think. I read an article on it (lost the link now, think it was the independent), but apparantly the Liverpool bench was asked 6 times if they was ready to make their sub.

I’ve not seen or heard anything about that. Houghton was full of praise for us in his post match interview.

Not impressed with Klopp one bit! Seems to have a knack of bottling big games or just getting schooled when it matters. They have the makings of a good team, but won't win anything under him.

Yes it was sarcastic. I would have thought games against big teams are at least considered big games. In those we've lost to City and Spurs for whatever reason, drawing with Chelsea, Utd and beating Arsenal. Hardly a disaster.
He really struggled during the Xmas fixtures since arriving in the PL, and this season there's more than ever before. Be really interesting to see if he's managed to improve on handling it this time.

We did pretty well actually in December last year, it was the January period where we completely went to shit.
Our biggest problem is still exactly the same as it was and always has been, a lack of a competent 6, defenders and the GK.
They'll all occasionally have great games but none are good enough, switch off regularly and not a single player apart from the ox bothers to track runners in to the box and not lose them.

Do you think the ox was good business by Klopp then? The sort of signing that moves Liverpool forward?
Moves us forward? Not sure about that and I'm still not convinced about his output at RW, in a team like ours he needs to produce consistently from that position because that's what the tactical framework of the current system demands from him. However that can easily change at any point depending on Klopps vision for the side going in to the next few years.
I do love his attributes though and he without fail always puts the shift in, he's had an excellent month for us and seems much better acclimated to the conditions/environment and patterns of play we use. I still see his position as either on the right of a 4-2-3-1 with a conventional striker or as no8 in the three. He hasn't played there yet for tactical reasons but long term I suspect those will end up being his positions.
We do however need VVD through the door immediately.
Oxlade was an unnecessary buy IMO. They really should have gone for upgrades in their back 6.
Would you rather get VVD or another solid cb and a replacement for Henderson though? Your attack is great, but your team always seems like it is dead from the neck down.
The money is there for both, we don't have a lot of cash but we've accumulated a fair bit over recent seasons. It's where a lot of the frustration over the summer stemmed from, the money was there and for whatever reason it didn't get used. It's a constant theme under the FSG ownership, the VVD fiasco was similar to what happened with Dempsey 5 years ago. We can't spend 150 mill every summer but this summer for a one off splurge the money was there. Fans have grown ever more impatient with the ownership and it is boiling close to a breaking edge, I just get the feeling we're teetering on the edge.
Regardless I just hope VVD is through the door or serious questions will have to be asked. The players we target recently have been of the requisite quality our problem is we just don't get enough of them and we're the squad with the most work to do. ( prior to the summer)
Keita coming in next summer is a massive help but top 4 again is a must, I'm just not sure if we're ever going to get a squad together to truly compete, one goes out and another comes in its never altogether at once. FSG hit the jackpot with Klopp, a manager who will get the squad to hit top 4 and churn out profits for the club on minimal expanse comparatively speaking.
I said it before the summer that I'd throw my toys out the pram if we didn't get the signings because every other fan was optimistic and I was sceptical, low and behold I was right, but here i am .
We'll see though.

Only City can spend without thinking. Without teams like Liverpool in the mix (and not getting spanked everytime they meet City) the league could settle with a newly defined and disturbing heirarchy.
For any United fans reading this I'm curious, because we are not so different abd we could very well find ourselves there in 20+ years time...

Klopp can finish 4th every season and the Dippers will lap it up. They class fourth as a trophy these days. The new Arsenal. Arsenal are the new Spurs.

The reasons for us doing a Liverpool back then were we didn't take advantage of the premier league deal and expand commercially. You took lead on that front then and we stagnated and never really recovered, FSG did well on that front maximising our off the field appeal but even that can only last so long with a lack of success on the field. United will not fall as far as we did, Woodward is excellent on that side of things, player recruitment and the way you conduct business may be questionable ( Disney land quote, Bayern CEO quote) springs to mind but eventually you should get it right. There just won't be another dynasty in this league for a while and may be ever again which is I think something that some fans fail to grasp.
Protests? probably not unless they go full H and G which for all their many many faults they aren't. Top four I would love to be in every season and yes it will appease the fans, I just can't help but feel Klopp is an easy way for FSG to make a lot of money without really investing too much and not really win anything. There's an opportunity under him to really go for trophies with a top class manager, but there's also a long term sense of foreboding emanating from it, if it doesn't happen under this manager will it ever?
They likely won't change, fans aren't always the brightest bulbs in the shed but eventually it's going to dawn on them.

We used to finish in your position (6th) many times so yeah 4th consistently for a while feels like progress. If we maintain CL football and not keep losing players to Barca/Real (or replenish them quicker than they leave) then we'll think about the next level which is challenge for the league.
I would say big games have something hinging on them. We wouldn't consider Liverpool's Audi cup victory over Bayern a big game, but a Europa league final against Sevilla with Champions league qualification riding on it is. Similarly, the league cup final against City (being what would have been their 1st trophy in almost a decade?). Even against Tottenham and Chelsea, they needed to close the gap. That point also suited Utd more.
I just can't think of a big game that Klopp hasn't bottled in some way, apart from maybe the Champions League qualifier against Hoffenheim, which they were really expected to win anyway.

We've recovered well since the Tottenham game. In recent seasons that would have been more than enough to send us into a downward spiral that ends in a 7th place finish.

Football is not linear. The same eleven do not play every week, and every top side needs a core of about 16-18 first team players. Chamberlain fits into that.
