Manchester City 17/18 discussion | "If you're here for the Champions clap your hands" (#6505)

They're destined for a decade of ill luck as soon as this season is over. Scarcely believable how often they've been fortunate since August.

Define fortunate.... winning a couple of penalty shoot-outs aren’t exactly the same as winning the lottery twice in two weeks. As for late goals, the best teams get late goals when it matters the most.. we should know that.

Without a doubt.

I'd also say that 05/06 Chelsea would simply dominate them.

The PL is weak right now, that's not City's fault, you can only beat who's in front of you, but seriously, other than United (who are still not full strength), all the other bigger sides are weak.

This must be remembered when facing the barrage of citeh hype.
The PL is weak? I thought it was supposed to be the strongest league in the world at the moment. If the PL is weak then how shit are the other leagues eh?

Possible we lose the league to city and get knocked out of 2 cup competitions by them.

Christ..

There isn’t a goalkeeper in the world I’d rather have in a penalty shootout than Bravo. His record for club and country speaks for itself.

The PL right now compared to previous eras.

Fair enough if you disagree.

Don't think it is. The PL is the strongest it's ever been right now and it's shows in Europe. 5 teams in the knockouts round and we could have 5 in the last 8.

Before it was just the big 4 and the rest of the league were pathetic. Now all the smaller teams have money so they can buy players from other sides in Europe. It's also the most versatile league atm with the most playing styles. Back then it was just counter after counter and the best counter attackign team won. When big teams played each other it was just a cagey load of nonsense bar that Liverpool Chelsea fgame in the cl that had a cricket score.

The league has the best coaches in Europe in Klopp, Pep, Mou, Poch and Conte (Arsene pls). The PL has outright the most money. The worst team in the PL era was that aful derby side to sum up how bad the worst teams were back then.

As I said eralier the league is tactically miles ahead and the football is far better than back then as players are better technically than they were a decade ago where almost everything was hoof and hardly anyone tried to play out.

The worst era was the start of the EPl were we were a laughing stock in Europe and EPl teams were getting swatted by no name clubs with Bruce and Pallister looking like drunks chasing the ball.

Also the rest of Europe was far weaker back then. We have genuine super clubs now to compete with. Madrid and Barcelona weren't super clubs back then and German football was not that great and Bayern were not a cl super power at all. The only italian team doing well back then was Milan so it was the EPl and Milan. Now we have to compete with Bayern, Real, Barcelona, PSg and Juve so CL is far stronger.

Another game city get out of jail. Leicester were the better team for most part just that they lacked the killerness. City are addicted to winning and that's why they are able to cross the line.

The strangest part is all these wins could still lead to nothing if they have a poor second half. I can easily see Pep spending another £50 odd million this January and buying more. He wants to go for the kill and win it all.

Got out of jail? conceded to a dubious 97th min pen but still went through whilst playing 5 or 6 youngsters

Far from our best tonight but considering the team I'm delighted with the result.

The kids again were excellent, Foden and Diaz are so calm and cool on the ball size is their only issue atm. Zinchenko did well considering he's usually a no.10 or LW, struggled a bit with Mahrez but coped well and again looked like he really wants to play. Dele-Bashiru really impressed me when he came on too, looked more than capable of playing at that level and had some neat touches. Nmecha did well but looked a little nervous in game (which is weird because he was so cool taking that pen and it was probably the best pen of the night considering.) Probably Adarabioyo's best performance in competitive game he was excellent and stayed stong. He still has issues with the ball but did ok tonight.

We had 8 players tonight feature who were 23 and under, 7 eligible for u21's football. Foden and Diaz looked tiny up against Leicester tonight so hopefully they will bulk up a bit but they really are two kids with exciting futures.

Also of note is the improvement in Mangala, has really stepped up when needed, like Tosin I think his ability with the ball will see him moved on, but the guy was excellent every time he played recently and again tonight.

Even had we lost tonight I'd be quite happy. I don't think we'll win the LC playing the team we had out tonight but I don't mind as long as they are getting games and developing, its great to see some of the academy starting to make the step up.

Don't think the 'PL is weak' argument holds much strength. For starters there is more competition for top four and every club has some financial clout to build on more than ever before.

But more-so because the argument sounds a tad sour. In 99/00 Utd won the league by 18 points. The following season by 10 points. Those margins of dominance suggests a weak competition but no Utd fan gave a shit. My memory blends those two seasons into one as looking back it was a stroll and there wasn't much in way of changes to the team over the two seasons. But the team played really fun football during that period so at the time I just wanted to enjoy the football I was watching rather than get bored of the lack of edge to the competition. It's only when you're seeing it from the outsider perspective do you bemoan the competition.

Just a shame his confidence is completely shot outside of that environment.

Pep is obviously an excellent manager. One of the true innovators of the game. His football is pleasing on the eye and more often than not tends to force opposition into meek surrender. However, I believe that league managers should not fall into his trap about "playing football". Defending deep and counter-attacking is also playing football. We have seen in the past that his teams have failings when the opposition plays compact and are ready to defend as a unit. They have found hard to break down those teams and have also received some pastings from quality opposition.

The second half of the season will be more interesting when teams have had a chance to assess them better. If the likes of Poch can accept that it's one game in the season where they don't have to "play football" or try to match the opposition, and instead devise ways to minimizing a superior team riding high on confidence, then the title race is far from over. There is a lot of football to be played. The real tests are still to come.

Bobby Madley, City should mentally prepare to being screwed by him anytime he's listed for their fixture. Rubbish referee

Very good read, for those who don't want to read it all it's pretty much taking United plan of leveraging all of it's fan around the world to increase it's profit but instead of fans and shops they have football clubs in which they aim to create one philosophy in aim of all becoming top clubs.

Excellent read. Really interesting the focus they have on China - with such huge population, it will be a great market

Hope United is geared up to face this global challenge from City

Bit like us when we find out Michael Oliver the blue referees the Derby then.
Not really , he didn’t spot/give a penalty+yellow card for herreras wrestling ability. Herrera should have been off for a 2nd yellow, following that, a few times including his dive.

However that is balanced with nothing given for Jesus dive.

Swings and roundabouts.

Even the 8mins of extra time last night was just about acceptable, with 6 substitutions and Mangala injury in the 2nd half.

So i'm listening to the game last night on the radio, and the commentators are up in arms about the Walker dive... saying it's a clear penalty and how badly the ref got it wrong, and how how hard done by City are and how unjust it is.

I've just seen the replay now... it's a feckin' dive.

Twats.

Was it weak when you were winning all your titles?
Erm yeah. That's the only reason Utd won all those titles. Along with luck, referees, and despite being the worst Utd team in xx years. That was the recipe to our success.

Think with all the oil money the prem is actually quite strong at the moment. Especially with United getting back to the top and more so if Liverpool and Arsenal ever decide to rise from their mediocrity. Money breeds power and there's a shiteload of money in the prem.

I think what people fail to understand is that Roy Keane should really be managing this club.

Not the point I was trying to make - the mentality of fans like you is part of what is holding us back.

We as fans need to adopt Keane's mentality when approaching this rivalry - THAT was my point.

this is a very good post which unfortunately will go unnoticed and unappreciated. Our fans like our club since sir Alex have gone soft. I bet the attitude some are having now , if was the same in mid 2000s many would have jizzed at errand scoring the equaliser against a Milan and proclaimed him as the greatest midfielder and questioned Scholes considering we were not winning much from 2003 to 06. Fans would have said our cl was a fluke as if not for terry we would have lost.

I can imagine even if we win the title next year some will say city were better and Jose was lucky.

Thank you for your support, seems people don't seem to understand just how far our mentality has shifted in a negative fashion, glad you do!

I remember seeing Herrera getting picked up and carried off the pitch by Mark Noble - at that moment the size of this shift truly hit me, we haven't quite recovered as a team or as fans since (although its improving)

Seen a few people on twitter and bluemoon suggest it is the best side in prem era. I disagree. Right now, great team. But the Utd 99 side, the Arsenal invincibles and Chelsea 04/05 all beat them.
We’re unliely to know that until the end of the season. But like for like comparisons with middle of December would say they are right up there.

Taking digs at United is ok, it is all part of the rivalry and I suppose they are entitled to it on account of their current success.

But taking digs at the abilities of individual players is crass. Especially targeting a guy who has received constant criticism from our own fans and yet had the mental fortitude to rise above it. I am betting that Sane, despite being a superior footballer, would have wilted had he ever been under the pressure Fellaini was in.
