Ha ha - now THAT is hypocrisy. When you're as successful as JM you can get away with it.

United paid £29.1M for Ferdinand in 2002. I'm not making a head to head comparison, however nobody knew back in 2002 how good he was to become.I’m not sure why Pogba’s fee is relevant here.
18 months ago fees were no where near as inflated as they are now. Everything exploded in the last window.
We’ve overpaid but it’s not as extreme as some are making it out to be.
For a FB. Even you must know that good CBs sell for much more.Is Kyle Walker's fee relevant?
Similar age, transfer only 5/6 months ago, £50 million.
You've just spunked 50% on top of that for fecking VVD.

Come off it. You're usually quite reasonable but no way on earth is VVD worth 75m pounds.
1) No resale value
2) No premium on potential as he's almost 27
3) No real European pedigree
4) No real international pedigree
5) Only 60 or so PL games to his name
You've probably paid double his actual value.
When´s that supposed to happen? During Liverpool corners or will United leave their own half this time?![]()
They won't. He's 26-27 (July) now, a couple of good years at LFC and he would already be past his sell-by date as far as those teams are concerned. However if we can get 5-6 years of solid defending out of him, it'll have been worth it to us.The funny thing is, if he does genuinely go on to be world class like many on here claim him to be, the second the Real Madrid's or Barcelona's of this world show him a bit of leg he will be right up it like a rat up a drain pipe since he has form for it. He won't be finishing his career there if he does reach his supposed potential.
And that's the crux of it. In the end the money will be forgotten. If he fails then we'll/he'll be roasted, and rightly so. If he's successful and helps shore up our defence he'll be considered a good buy regardless of the price.Listen, I don't doubt he will improve them and in that respect it's a good signing, however the money involved is beyond ridiculous.
Expectations will be he's the best centre half in the world for that money and rightly so. Sadly he's nowhere near that level IMO.
Calm down precious, I haven’t defended Klopp, his statements make him look like a bellend. But no more so than Jose, who’s also very prone to hypocrisy, so to defend one and attack the other seems pretty hypocritical in itself to me.
A quick google indicates Pogba’s transfer was €105m euros with €5m euros in addons which actually comes out at £97m pounds at the current exchange rate.
We overpaid by around 15 to 25 million, given that both Chelsea and City wanted him.Come off it. You're usually quite reasonable but no way on earth is VVD worth 75m pounds.

So why do most Liverpool fans keep banging on about Pogba's fee? Even you lot must know that good Midfielders sell for much more than CBs.For a FB. Even you must know that good CBs sell for much more.

Luckily transfer was not done today, it was done in august 2016.
Feck me, we are clutching at straws now. When we bought Pogba, €105m was about £89m.A quick google indicates Pogba’s transfer was €105m euros with €5m euros in addons which actually comes out at £97m pounds at the current exchange rate.
How can Pogba's fee ever be £95m??I know that. It was in reply to TheReligion who said that Pogba’s cost was not £95m including add-ons, basically stating top line fees with add-ons for Liverpool transfers, but omitting add-ons for United transfers, giving a false comparison.
It’s a bit disingenuous to selectively pick when to use add-ons to support your argument.
If VVD was £75m then Lukaku was £90m and Pog was £95m.
Good to see Jose saying as it is.
Liverpool fans are all giddy now, but do they realise they have to find a new manager soon-ish?
"The day that this is football, I'm not in a job anymore."
I don't think you quite got that post somehow.
I very rarely agree with anything Mourinho says but he was pretty calm and rational today I think. I don't even think he was taking a dig or anything. His complete quote is actually quite reasonable:Yeah his reply was calm and that's in other tweets, my post wasn't about reply it's about Jose reminding Journalists what to do.
"The problem with my life is that I've said too much s**t in the past and no-one forgets it"
Prophetic words right there.
Anyway, this is what he has to say now:
"The past half year changed pretty much everything. It is not nice, but that is the market. That is the world. We have to adapt."

Klopp probably didn’t realise that prices were going to explode when he made those Pogba comments. I doubt that he expected to have to pay so much to land his targets.
He would’ve been better off not saying anything about what other clubs pay for players though. He’s left himself open to criticism because of how things have turned out.
You have to admit that £89 million was a lot of money in football when you signed him.Ah yes, because Juventus, multiple Serie A champions and CL contenders, were going to let go of Paul Pogba for 30m a year ago.
I very rarely agree with anything Mourinho says but he was pretty calm and rational today I think. I don't even think he was taking a dig or anything. His complete quote is actually quite reasonable:
"If I was one of you, I would ask him about his comments one year ago."
"The reality is that if they think that the player is the right player for them and they really want the player they pay his amount or they don’t have the player because that is the way the market is at that time so when we compare now the amount of money certain managers and club spend try to compare that I am not saying with 10 years ago but three years ago is to compare the impossible."
"VVD most expensive defender in history of football. Was he better than Maldini, Bergomi, Rio F? Cannot say that. It is way market is. If you pay, you pay a crazy amount of money. If you don't, you don't have the player. Simple as that. No criticism about that."
You have to admit that £89 million was a lot of money in football when you signed him.
If you’d signed him last summer it wouldn’t have stirred up such a fuss considering some of the other fees being thrown around for the likes of Lukaku, Walker, Morata and now Van Dijk.
You expected players like Neymar, Morata, Walker, VVD etc to go for the fees that they went for in the summer? He saw it as a chance to have a pop at United to endear himself to the Liverpool fans...
Otherwise, if it's true what you say, that he hadn't a clue prices were going to explode, he's a fool!
Everyone saw it coming!
Maybe Mourinho was better at predicting it than Klopp was. I didn’t expect fees to blow up like they did last summer. At the same time Jose also said Pogba's fee would look small compared to other signings and he was spot on, which means he sort of predicted the market and made the move before prices becomes even more ridiculous.
Whilst I agree with the points above, no denying he's an excellent PL-proven CB. In terms of £££, well, agreed with the second post re: pay-up or lose-out, as the market seems to be these days.
Lads, we spent £90m on Lukaku from Everton!
Taken at face value .. yes, I agree. When considering what has happened with the market, it could considered disputable. However it was 18 months ago and people's opinions are allowed to change, if you asked him today I've no doubt his opinion wouldn't be the same on what constitutes an excessive fee since so much has changed ... and he would almost certainly regret making that statement back then.
That's pretty much this thread. Klopp looks like an ass yet again because of comments he made and really also because of his comments about his defense in the beginning of the season which obviously weren't true.Klopp probably didn’t realise that prices were going to explode when he made those Pogba comments. I doubt that he expected to have to pay so much to land his targets.
He would’ve been better off not saying anything about what other clubs pay for players though. He’s left himself open to criticism because of how things have turned out.
Jeez, you and your obsession with Lukaku.
I know![]()
