Mbappe was always going for silly money, weren't United, Real and City also in the running ? I know £100m was the minimum quoted before even that skyrocketed, so it's pointless trying to downplay it as 'only PSG', it was the market that went nuts not just PSG.
No VVD wouldn't have sold for £40m simply because Southampton wouldn't have sold him at that. It simply isn't the market price for him, as an in-demand CB, when compared to the prices other players (and not even forwards) were going for. Also with City and Chelsea both interested it was always going to be £50m+ even without Liverpool, Stones is your barometer for that and for most people VVD is a better all round player.
You do know that common-sense isn't permitted in this thread ? If you're not going to berate or denigrate Liverpool, whatever the reality, you have no right posting !Gonna defend Klopp & Liverpool a bit here - yes it's an overpay (I'd value him at about £50-55m), but they absolutely had to get a top quality CB in ASAP to replace Lovren in the XI, and Van Dijk is probably the CB around who fits them best.
Issues I've noticed with Liverpool's defence this season:
Van Dijk is probably the most dominant CB in the air in the PL, and quick. He's also been spoken about as a leader, and thus should have the ability to properly organize Liverpool's defence (Liverpool also lack regular XI leaders in general, so he could be a future captain).
- Struggled to defend through-balls due to lack of recovery speed.
- Been easy for runners to time their movement off the shoulder of defenders - due to inability to align defensive line properly and defenders being staggered and out of position.
- Poor defending set-pieces and aerial duels in their box.
He's also technically good and comfortable and composed on the ball with the ability to play quick balls over the top.
So all-in-all, yes I think they've overpaid and their were potentially cheaper options on the board like De Vrij, Inigo Martinez, Koulibaly, Manolas for between £30-45m, but none of them combine the physicality, ability on the ball, leadership and PL experience that Van Dijk has.
I agree with what Klopp said really - sometimes you have to forget the fee and think about the player you've attained, i.e. sometimes you have to overpay for the player you really want, and it's not always a case of just you being one-tracked minded and you should look at other targets, occasionally a player is just by far the best option for the way you want the team to play.
It's a shame he looked like a hypocrite in the process of making this point though after his Pogba comments.
Over the past couple of pages you have made excuses for at least a dozen transfers, or so it seems, with according to you, only the VVD one being the outlier. Interesting revisionism.

Whilst I am not convinced by Klopp, you have to say that they're building a fantastic squad!
I just wonder if they'll manage to fill all the weak positions before losing some of their key players? Seems like their curse is always losing important players before they've had a chance to complete the puzzle. Looks like it will happen with Coutinho, who's the type of player they never effectively replace (once sold).
They don't really seem to have bought any dross and are generally in the market for higher ticket players now. Maybe VVD and Kieta are being funded by the eventual sale of Coutinho, which could lead to the usual problem for them.

As JFF said above - he played whilst feeling sick - might explain why he still looked off his game. He said so himself during an interview afterwards, he was still feeling it and it was probably why he was subbed off. The dressing room rose to applaud him when he entered. Good camaraderie.

His style of play was made for the club.

They've looked good for some time and haven't lost in eons as of now. They are also making quite a number of quality signings. As I said, it's good that the Barca's of this world will always make it difficult for them.

Hard to use a Merseyside derby as a barometer, there will always be something extra in those games that can't be accounted for. Lallana was clearly lacking match sharpness as well and it's not like VVD is used to playing with the team. No Henderson either. If you are like this critical with Liverpool's performance you must be distraught with some of the UTD ones.
Chances are that Liverpool will replace Coutinho with someone top class. Their attacking recruitment has been very, very good in recent times.
It's irrelevant though because they won't get close to challenging for the league without a solid holding midfielder and a top goalkeeper like De Gea, Courtois or Ederson.
