Manchester City 17/18 discussion | "If you're here for the Champions clap your hands" (#6505)

I think Richards and Sturridge are the last youth players that got a chance. Sturridge had to move once they started signing forwards.

Yeah I was thinking Richards too. Think he's the last youth product with a decent amount of apps and that was a long, long time ago. 11/12 season was the last one he got a decent amount according to Transfermarkt.

Sturridge got 21 apps
Richards got 179 apps

Putting the above in context, Rashford has 67 senior apps for us.

Sturridge left because he was demanding a massive wage increase that City weren't prepared to give him. He's was City's young player of the year and massively rated by the club, but turned down a deal for bigger wages at Chelsea and joined them on a free.

Sturridge left because City refused to give him £65k a week, not that he wasn't getting games.

Next season hopefully Maffeo will become Walkers understudy and maybe Gunn will become #2 to Ederson with both Foden and Diaz getting more games. Hopefully Tosin will go out on loan and prove himself but I'm not sure he's got what's needed to be a top 4 players.

Guardiola is spending a fortune but at least it's mainly on players in the 22-26 age group so I think after this summers window we'll be able to strengthen the team with only 1 or 2 signings per window, most the dead wood has gone now and we've only really got Kompany, Yaya, Ferna and Silva as outfield players over 30 and already bringing in their replacements who are all early 20's so hopefully they'll be there for a good 5+ years.

We got rid of 9 first team players last summer, I reckon we'll get rid of another 6 this summer, Kompany, Yaya, Mangala, Hart, Danilo and Bravo. Hopefully not Aguero but I wouldn't be surprised if he went if a big offer came in, I could also see us selling Delph if a big offer came in.

Bernardo Silva has so much potential. He is the perfect long term replacement for David.

Does anyone see Madrid or PSG going after De Bruyne in the summer if he has a great World Cup aswell ?

Also, great to see Sterling's improvement, imo he has the potential to be better than Sane and Jesus, stay more time at the club despite being older. It's a matter of opinion of course.

KDB signed an extension with City last week, tying him down to 2023. No chance he leaves.

Can you see Patrick Roberts getting a chance at City when he returns?

you're probably better placed to say as you'll probably have seen more of him than most City fans. He did well against us in the CL but that's about all I've seen from him.

He's a good player, looks outstanding in domestic games but obviously the Scottish league is of a poor quality. He has looked good in Europe too. It would be a shame for him to not get a chance at City, I'd like to see him go to Spain and develop further if there is no place for him in the City side. Could see him at an Everton mind you.

Contracts barely means anything in this crazy market these days. If anyone comes in with a crazy offer, City will at least consider it.

He's their best player, and still fairly young, what would be the point of that? No matter how much money is on the table, whatever replacement they potentially buy will be inferior.

Even if they could get Messi ? We don't know what will happen with the Catalunian independence stuff and how it will affect Barça. He has a clause in his contract which allows him to leave if they get throw out of La Liga. Selling De Bruyne or another big player would give them enough money to afford Messi's wages. I'm just speculating here, but all i'm saying is clubs will be looking at KDB the same way they're looking at Kane.

Catalonia won't become independent anytime soon i think, anyway that's too far fetched speculation at this time. I think any potential bid for De Bruyne in the summer will be summarily rejected regardless of the amount.

Naah, I think PEP has already given up on him.
Moreover Roberts must have angered the staff at City more when he went to Celtic again. City apparently didn't want him to join Celtic again.

I think we will sell Roberts in the net window, unless PEP somehow decides to use him as a backup winger(which i really doubt).

City need like 8 wins in next 8 matches to seal the league and the 8th match is the Derby.
Would be depressing if that is the match which wins them the trophy.

Noticed you missed one:

Bernardo Silva won the French league with Monaco playing on the wing, can't get a game. ;)

Can’t get a game?

He could have started more, but he is already on 4 goals and 9 assists having played more than 1660 minutes this season. That is more minutes than Lingard for context.

Yeah, I can't see Roberts getting anywhere with City unfortunately. For one, he might be doing good at Celtic but he's hardly doing anything spectacular, and if you're playing in the SPL and want to make it for a top Premier League side, you've got to be able to stand out as a level ahead of everyone else really. As you say, it also was poor from him career-wise to go back to Celtic, perfectly understandable, but he should have tested himself in the Premier League or La Liga.

So after all that, we don't sign Mahrez and Diaz got a chance and looked decent anyway. All fun and games, lads.

Oh God no. That cannot be allowed to happen. A guard of honour would be even worse. I hope we refuse if it comes to that.

Can't see that happening. We've got to go to Burnley on Saturday, Arsenal a couple of weeks after that, Everton a couple of weeks after that. We'll drop points in those games. I have us winning the title at home to Swansea on April 21st or away at West Ham the week after.

You hope you would refuse a guard of honour? I would hope your club has more class, if the situation was reversed, I certainly hope my club would have, as much as I would hate it as a fan, clubs need to have standards.

You don't have to do it as far as I'm aware. I'm not incharge at United so my opinion doesn't really matter but it would make my blood boil to see it.

If United drop points its possible but we won't win 8 in a row. the likelyhood is we'll drop points vs Arsenal and Burnley away, plus maybe Chelsea at home.

For us to win the title just before or during the derby United would need to drop something like 6 to 9 points in the next 7 games. That would mean loses vs Chelsea, Liverpool dropped points somewhere else and another team. Those games aside you should win the other 5 comfortably.

Do we do guard of honours in away matches??

They would get a guard of honour at home & away matches as soon as the league was mathematically won.

Don't think the Glazers, Ed & Jose would sanction it at the Council house though. Woulds make us look small time. I'm sure also that the club are still seething over City's antics post-Derby & in the Sanchez saga. Jose has also inferred that he has no respect for the ''City Project'' & Fraudiola.

I think they will get in only 1 game, the first game after they are crowned champions.

Realistically, does anyone know earliest they could be crowned champions?

Sorry. :(

It's football, don't let it depress you. Sure it's not nice to see them flying but there are more important things in life.

(I'm saying this after watched a game and after I've been here for 1.5 hour. :) )

We lost away to Basel and they just humiliated them. Watching how teams like Spurs and Juventus play, it becomes even worse.

We just need to stop being negative with how we set up in important matches. This system that Mourinho is using clearly doesn't suit our players.

I can totally see Arse now beating them, how often do we see this - a team gets built up to win a treble/quadruple (it even happened to us in the past) and in a short space of time the wagon falls apart, and they're left with one trophy at the end of it.
