England World Cup XI...

RLC > Henderson, Wilshere, Drinkwater, Barkley etc.

Butland
Walker Smalling Maguire Young
Dier
RLC Alli
Sterling Rashford
Kane

How ever you slice and dice, it is such a shit team and you have an even shittier manager on top of that. I would be surprised if you got out of the group.

Butland
Walker Stones Cahill Rose
Dier
Wilshere Alli
Sterling Kane Rashford

This team has everything imo.

Lots of interesting comments on this, I feel that we have to have a team that can score goals, as we will certainly ship goals. It seems that Southgate will go with three at the back, with any combination of Jones, Maquire, Stones, Gomez and Dier, personally I think that Gomez, Stones and Maquire should be the first choices, all three can bring the ball out of defence and start an attack and provide an extra body in midfield. Wing backs would be Walker and Rose, with Trippier and Bertrand as back ups (Shaw needs to play to have any chance). The two midfield players would be Drinkwater and Loftus Cheek, both give you work rate, and to me are more skilled that Henderson or Dier, (hopeful that Loftus Cheek will be fit in time, Dier would also be back up for defence). Attacking midfielder role would be between Alli (needs to grow up, any repeat of the kick on Sanchez the other night would be a red card in a WC match), Lallana and Lingard, I would go with Lallana. I feel that TWO strikers are paramount, Kane, who will come deeper to link play, Vardy, who has outstanding pace, and will stretch defences, (as Rashford will) therefore giving Kane and Lallana more space to create. Butland or Pickford in goal, either will do for me. We will need to counter attack at pace, not try to hold the ball up, constantly knocking the ball backwards, and get players into the box.

Swap Cahill for Jones and i agree.

Winks is a good like for like replacement for Wilshere (if need be), Dier/Alli/Winks all player together at Spurs, Loftus cheek is another good option.

Lingard/Walcott/Vardy all impact subs if need a goal.

Saw a conversation on this on Sky Sports. If the tournament started next week, what XI would you go with?

Mine:

I think 4-3-3 would be best, so:

Butland

Walker
Maguire
Stones
Young

Dier
Wilshere
Winks

Sterling
Kanye
Martial obviously not really, I mean Rashford

They may go 3-5-2, so:

Butland

Walker

Stones
Smalling
Maguire

Young

Dier
Wilshere

Jessi
Sterling

Kane
Shaw’s definitely in with a shout and Jones over Stones all day long.

Not Hart
Stones Jones Maguire
Walker Dier ??? Shaw
Alli
Sterling Kane
Similar to how Spurs have played at times this season. I don't think England's wingers are any good (as wingers), so a more narrow formation with wingbacks made sense to me. Not sure who should partner Dier, and I'd be tempted to have Lingard over Alli.
Going on this season Lingard is a cert to start over Alli.

If the tournament started next week I would probably go with

Butland

Walker=Jones-Stones-Shaw
Dier-Wilshere
Sterling-Lingard-Rashford
Kane

However I think that Vardy, Henderson, Hart & Alli will probably end up in the team
Kane’s a dead cert and not much chance of playing with two strikers, so no Vardy from the start. Lingard should definitely be in over Alli and if Joe Hart is anywhere near the team Southgate needs roaded.

Maybe, but it wouldn’t be justified in my opinion. I’m no world has Luke Shaw had a better season at LB than Ashley Young.

Stones is ahead of Jones, he’s had a good season and is the best on the ball of all centre halves. I’m confident Southgate will have him as first choice.

Yeah it’s a tough call, Shaw has been good and there’s a long way to go before the summer.

Stones has looked good in Pep’s system, dominating teams but realistically England won’t play like that. Stones is good on the ball but ask him to defend and he looks like a fish out of water as seen vs Liverpool. Obviously I can see why he’d be picked but definitely not my first choice.

Butland
Stones Jones Maguire
Walker Shaw
Wilshere Dier
Sterling Rashford/Alli
Kane

One of Rashford or Alli need to step up their form drastically to have a decent front 3. Our midfield options are terrible though

I like England's team reading this thread.. why are people so pessimistic? Shit playing style?

Butland
Walker Stones Cahill Rose
Dier
Wilshere Alli
Sterling Kane Rashford

This team has everything imo.

Thats pretty much the selection i'd go with too. Hard to leave out Jesse on current form but for the moment its a purple patch, besides I think he'd do a better job of changing a game from the bench than Rashford would.

I am going to make a bold statement, my favourite for the WC is Spain and I suspect England can reach at least the last 4, I am not that convinced about France as a team, while Brazil or Germany better wait and see.

The problem I have with England is that I see a lot of talented players, but I can´t see a formation/system that makes sense.

I'm a positive England fan but I don't see this happening. The quarters would be a good result for us. If we don't get out of the group it will be an abject failure again. We really need to be aiming to beat a big nation as well.

Martial will get snubbed by England.

Rightly so, he doesn't get stuck in enough.

3-4-3. Pickford-Walker-Jones-Maguire-Stones-Rose-Wilshere-Dier-Alli-Sterling-Kane.

Been thinking about this and given we're in the internation break. For Tunisia and Panama I'd go with a 343:
Butland
Stones, Dier, Maguire
Walker, Henderson, Wilshere, Bertrand
Sterling, Kane, Rashford
Against Belgium and any other knock out games, I'd bring in Lingard for one of Rashford or Sterling and play him as a LCM.

I'd definitely start Stones and Maguire in a back 3, but not sure about the 3rd CB. Putting Dier in means Henderson needs to come into midfield.

Thinking about our squad a bit more, I think the 3 at the back suits the squad a lot better than a 433 or 4231. Not that the XI I named is breathtakingly good, but for most positions I'm not that concerned with the alternatives we have.

Some of the better teams we had, if one of our best players gets injured and we're fecked, this time around. Kane aside, I wouldn't panic too much about any injuries.

Butland
Walker Stones Cahill Rose
Dier
Wilshere Alli
Sterling Kane Rashford

Exactly the starting XI I'd go with, maybe Jones ahead of Cahill if he gets back in the United team. I'm pretty sure Henderson will start ahead of Dier.

Trippier isn't making enough of an impression with the opportunities he's been given. He could have locked up that role (with Walker at centre half) but I'd rather have Walker in more attacking areas on the basis of these two games.

Alli better find some club form, too. He's one of our best players but the Lingard-Sterling duo works very well. Sterling is a certainty to play and Lingard's current form is very, very good. Even Lallana would fit the team more from a stylistic point of view.

Pickford
Dier Stones Maguire
Walker Henderson Wilshere Rose
Lingard Sterling
Kane

At the moment I'd be taking a good look at the team above, if all fit. Wilshere, in particular, would be very helpful. And as much as he bores me I think this team needs Henderson's industry at the World Cup.

If Tripper starts to look the part then I'd be inclined to move Dier back into midfield at Henderson's expense, but he looks like a fish out of water.

Southgates really onto something with Walker at RCB.

Not English but i like this team. Kane for vardy obviously. Not sure who you play instead of ox though

Butland
Walker Stones Cahill Rose
Dier
Wilshere Alli
Sterling Kane Rashford

This team has everything imo.

I think if you replace Cahill with a more in-form CB this team makes a lot of sense for the 2 weak group stages games where 3 points are imperative, but I would have very little confidence in that team (particularly the non-Dier CMs) defensively against proper opposition.

Your team should be build around getting the most out of Kane and Sterling. A bit like Holland under LvG with RvP and Robben.

Lallana Kane Sterling
Rose Wilshere Henderson Walker
Maguire Dier Jones
Pickford
Lallana needs to find some form of course, but he is the best support player that you have in attack imo.

Loftus-Cheek was knocking on the door before his injury. He's back fit now (came off the bench for Palace in their last game) but maybe too late for him.

There's no way Lingard shouldn't be in that side.

I think he will stay with the 3-5-2, great width, and allows Stones to step into midfield with the ball and somewhat make up for the lack of outstanding midfield options. I think Southgate rates Stones very highly and sees him as the key part of his plan

Butland

Jones
Stones
Maguire

Walker
Henderson
Wilshere- Like it or not he is only midfielder with a bit of craft on the ball.
Rose

Ali/Lingard
Sterling
Kane

Butland / Pickford
Trippier - Stones - Maguire
Walker - Oxlade - Henderson - Bertrand
Sterling -- Alli
Harry Kane.
3-4-2-1. Wilshere and Vardy like super subs...
