Chelsea 2017/18 thread - FA Cup Champs, League chumps

I hope we smash them at OT, Jose will be looking at that fixture with one eye no doubt.

Too early to say about top four.

Last night we had no recognised striker, playing Hazard there was desperate as it had already been tried with minimal results.

Willian had recently been injured after finding form and worse we had no natural cover for Christensen when he got inured (0-0 at that point). The cover should have been Luiz yet he was on the rumour mill as possibly going to Arsenal.

One of the faults of Conte unlike Mourinho is he rarely gets his subs right and yesterday proved no exception.

That's what people said 6 years ago.

That Chelsea team was struggling the league but they still had great players and superior characters on the pitch. I can't see it with this current squad tbh. Too many average but hardworking players, no big characters on the pitch at all, only one top player.

It's going to be a demolition job by Barcelona, I can't see anything other than a Barcelona win in both games and could very easily be an embarrassing scoreline

This Chelsea team is full of average players in so many positions and do not look like they are fighting for the manager and also looks like the manager has given up as well

We'll see. 6 years ago we were going to get demolished and we didn't.

The team that Beat Barca and Bayern Munich had the likes of Mikel, Ramires, Cahill, Kalou, Bosingwa, Meireles and Torres playing in it.

We might not be as good as we were 6 years ago but neither are Barca.

In terms of quality we are easily better than that season.

I could be wrong football is unpredictable after all

I just wouldn't be surprised to see a one sided game is pretty much my take on it and would have Barca as heavy favourites

He wont get sacked, well, he will if Watford beat them and Barca give them a slapping. Absolutely. Soon as top 4 seems to be slipping away Roman will pull the trigger. Too soon to say who will drop out, 8 pts between 2nd and 5th, thats sod all

I can totally see why they didnt sign world class players for 40, 50m etc in Jan, Conte is 100% not there next year IMO so to splash out on major signings is silly when the coach coming in may not want them. Giroud will be a good signing though.

Hey @duffer whats best for the club, though? He goes now, or in the summer?

Don't think it really matters. We've had revolving door policy for managers for years now and it seems to kinda work. Win the league, feck up, sack the manager, new manager, win the league, feck up, rinse and repeat.

I don't think he'll go this season barring a league collapse.

As a fan, isn't it psychologically draining. I felt sick when LVG left. Like ffs, we have to go through this shite again.

I remember being utterly gutted when Gullit left. It's been varying degrees since. I'll be mildy annoyed if Conte goes.

You had Cech, Terry, Lampard and Drogba.. One if the best spines in PL history.
But by then they were massively watered down versions, imagine Rio, Figgis And Vidic under Moyes for a comparison.

I don't remember when they faded, so you may be right. But sure it could not have been THAT bad, winning CL along the way.

Obviously they didn't have the legs to win a league, but for cup games they used their experience to shut teams out completely. They had been in 4 semifinals (reaching a final) in 5 years before they declined from 2010-11. I'd back that team over this team in CL any day of the week and twice on Sunday!

Do you think Carlo is the right person given the current state of your squad?

I don't think he will be successful for Chelsea if he is hired.
Carlo is just sarcasm on my part.

There are some Chelsea "fans" out there who demand for the manager's head everytime some results go bad and ignore the elephant in the room which is the squad is filled with mediocrity thanks to Roman not spending much anymore. Yet they still demand for trophies. Go figure.

Conte is doing a good job. Problems with Chelsea are similar to what United/Jose were/are going through - one or two world class players and a bunch of average or underperforming players. Midfield is a bit suspect as well.

Sure, just like Jose, Conte has made some tactical errors now and then, but which manager doesn't. Would be madness to get rid of him, but surprisingly enough that looks to be the case with your club.

Barcelona will annihilate them and realistically could get embarrassing for them with the scoreline

Wouldn't be surprised if be be sacked after they get knocked out by Barca

Everyone always makes these predictions and usually the team that is supposed to be getting annihilated ends up winning or making a close fight of it.

I neither regularly demand managers heads nor demand more trophies. I'm done with Conte at the moment because he seems to be acting in a petulant way that doesn't help our situation and certainly isn't bringing out the best in the players at a time when we have several vital players due for contract renewal.

Having the manager publicly asking the board to support him, is utterly ridiculous and disrespectful to the club. If he wants public support he should be approaching the board behind closed doors and discussing the matter, not trying to put them on the spot in the media. He deserves to be sacked for that alone.

Very surprised that the Chelsea fans are calling for him to be sacked. He won the league title last season when no one expected them to win it. He has every right to be pissed off considering he's not been getting players which he wants.

He's acting like he's the only one who has the club's best interests at heart. I'm not ok with that. The club have brought in some excellent players this year with the likes of Morata, Rudiger etc and Christiensen looks the match of any top CB. If Conte was being accused by the club of underachieving then he might have a point considering City's spending, but when we're losing to the likes of Burnley, Palace, Bournemouth etc, and he's sulking on the touchline and slagging the board in the media then he can do one.

They're good players but they're not what the manager demanded and also he's the second consecutive manager who's been complaining about the recruitment. No doubt he deserves some blaming for losing all the matches you just mentioned, but some of the blame should go to the Chelsea board particularly when he's not in charge of recruitment.

I think people make too much of his title win last season. Don't get me wrong, it was a great achievement, but he did it with a strong and excellent team that should have been contending for the title anyway. Some people have been making out as if he did a Leicester and won something unthinkable, but we're talking about a team that had won the title under Mourinho just two seasons before and had some really excellent players.

Again I don't want to downplay his great first season, but he did not inherit trash, and he has been supported pretty well by the club. It's only the insanity of City that is suddenly making half our fans think the club aren't investing. Its not realistic to expect the club to build half a new team to every managers particular desires. What if they did and then he fecks off after 2 seasons? Do we replace them all again?
