Chelsea 2017/18 thread - FA Cup Champs, League chumps

Chelsea wanted a back up for a striker who scores only headers, so they sign a back up who scores only headers. Random purchase.

Feel a bit jealous, Giroud has always been my favorite non-United player. For all his faults, had a soft spot for him. Wish we had signed him at some point.

Conte will be in treatment most of the time for high blood pressure and body pains.

First when Giroud misses chances in normal time

And when Giroud scores a header in stoppage time

So Conte has signed an XI of players + subs since joining Chelsea:
Bakayoko - 40m
Drinkwater - 35m
Emerson - 18m
Giroud - 20m
Batshuayi - 33m
Barkley - 20m
Kante - 30m
Alonso - 25m
Luiz - 35m
Rudiger - 30m
Morata - 58m
Zappacosta - 27m
Caballero - free.

Caballero
Zappa Luiz Rudiger Alonso
Baka Kante Drinkwater
Barkley
Morata Batshuayi

Subs: Giroud, Emerson.

Expect only three to start in their next game though.

Giroud, Barkley & Emerson. What do we think Chelsea fans?

Very happy with Giroud and Barkley. Emerson is a wait and see. Alonso needs a rest.

Drinkwater, Emerson, Giroud, Batshuayi, Barkley, Zappacosta and Caballero weren't purchased to start though. Still a list that screams 4,5,6th place though.

Pleased with the 3 backups signing this window. More annoyed with letting Musonda go than anything else.

It's the same problem with RLC though - he's not getting the minutes he needs to develop. Surely we'll be buying a new forward soon as Willian will be 30 and Pedro will be 31 when next season starts?

I’m annoyed he went to Celtic, I just can’t see him developing that much there. Maybe a Dortmund or Bundesliga loan would have done him nicely.

Something to smile about atleast, not a good performance eh?

Read that Conte's prematch interview wasn't good and looked like a man who is about to resign.

Does Bakayoko have a "must play" clause in this contract? Looks nothing like a top 4 player. Fabregas, Drinkwater, Barkley, and even Luiz are better than him in midfield.

They're in serious trouble. They have to win the next 2 PL games because their fixture list after that is hideous.

CL - Chelsea v Barcelona 20th Feb
PL - United v Chelsea 25th Feb
PL - City v Chelsea 4th Mar
PL - Chelsea v Palace 10th Mar
CL - Barcelona v Chelsea 14th Mar
PL - Burnley v Chelsea 17th Mar
PL - Chelsea v Tottenham 1st Apr

They could have an FA Cup fixture in there too if they beat Hull on the 16th Feb.

Imagine if they fluke it vs Barcelona again.

I imagine Messi will finally break his Chelsea duck and tear them a new one though.

Wonder how Chelsea fans will spin it when Conte gets sacked. Jose is short term manager and all that shit, still he will be longest serving manager at Chelsea, Inter, Madrid in last 10-15 years.

Anyways looks like his days are numbered, If I was a Chelsea fan I would be mad at the person involved in all the transfers. They didn't back the coach who win them league at all, instead they signed poor to average players.

You're right in that strange things are happening at SB and it is hard to interpret.

Have the board given up on Conte because of his fall-outs with Costa and possibly Luiz?
If so is this why we are buying a lot of players recovering from serious injury and unlikely to play a big role this season to encourage him to move on.

Are the board just clueless in getting players or is it that they are trying to ensure they do not overpay with the pending stadium rebuild?

With Giroud we at least have a chance of remaining in the top four, though Conte still needs to pick the right team.

Some Chelsea fans blame Conte instead and will do so for any other coach that comes after him while deliberately absolving the Board or whoever is making these rubbish transfers of any responsibility.

He HAS to do what Mourinho refused to do. Hold the players accountable who aren’t performing and give the kids a chance, even if they’re not ready in his eyes. Hudson-Odoi played 25 minutes last night. Show the senior players their places are up for grabs. Change the system. He tried 4 formations last season!

Chelsea fans talking about giving young players chances is a nice fantasy just like Manutd fans talks about fluid front 3.

Not anything long term, just to give the others a kick in the arse, please

Chelsea have as much chance as any team to finish 2nd, still in FA cup and have very tough fixture against Barca, you think Conte will take the risk?

Might play weaker team before CL if the rest between the games is not so big.

Conte isn't wrong that his overall squad depth is very poor compared to City and Utd. Hard to argue against that - last year they had the benefit of a light schedule.

Fcuk. Thats a rough fun of fixtures.

No of course he wouldn’t risk it, I’m aware of that. But he has to change something. Bakayoko isn’t really showing any signs of improvement, so it’s Kante against the world. If Luiz didn’t get hurt/fall out with Conte, I’d be more optimistic. The thought of Cahill having to start long term Bc of Christensen’s injury can make things a lot worse if we stay in a back 3.

He's not wrong. They clearly overachieved last year, both in terms of getting these performances out of these players and turning these performances into the number of points they got. I'd say they're playing just about at their real level at the moment, just slighly below last year's.

We've spent 250 million on new players and Rudiger is the only one that has potentially improved our first 11

It's pretty clear that Conte has seriously limited control in terms of transfers so he must be absolutely fuming right now. Conte will either get sacked or resign at the end of the season and we'll bring in a new big name manager, nothing will change though as we still have an absolute buffoon called Marina in control of transfers

I don't think they'll make the top 4 unless Hazard starts going through the gears.

Completely over performed last season and not having European football was a huge factor. Said at the very start of this thread that I would be absolutely shocked if they put up a decent title defence. Their squad is littered with very average players who overachieved last season. I really just don't see it with them whatsoever.

agreed on both, huge factor not playing in Europe, can see them finishing 5th this year ahead of dire Arsenal team, but they might push for it too like they always do

And the squad is underwhelming indeed, some of their best players are squad players in ta top club at best, wonder if Abramovich is not willing to invest or just inept manager's picking average players. They are not spending much for players, Barkley and Giroud for instance were bargains for what they can getfor instance but only really world class palyer is hazard there and too many average ones

Barcelona will annihilate them and realistically could get embarrassing for them with the scoreline

Wouldn't be surprised if be be sacked after they get knocked out by Barca
