I think you're underestimating the potential impact and lasting power of it. For one, it hasn't simply been a few thousand, it's been tens of thousands (if not more) and it's been the same story across the country even beyond where you'd expect.

The number of women getting ready to run and to help in the coming election is only growing

https://www.npr.org/2018/02/20/5855...running-for-congress-in-2018-compared-to-2016

If there's success with that, the impact will certainly last longer and be felt more keenly in the political world. I'm not saying it will definitely continue on this trajectory, but it's certainly looking in good shape.

I remember telling a depressed colleague at the time Trump was elected that progress isn't linear. Sometimes the path gets harder or you take steps back. Our best hope would be that people who were the most angered, saddened, and shocked by it channeled that emotion into righting things as they saw fit. I personally feel that's what we're seeing now.

It definitely isn't linear. Trump's Presidency is merely a temporary blip in a much longer term upward march of progress. Its basically America's final attempt to expunge its racist, mysoginist id by way of allowing aging Archie Bunker baby boomers one final dance in politics. After it finishes, they will be replaced by significantly more progressive ideas and policies.

Kids are always idealists. The sooner these FL kids learn that shouty town halls and sad songs don't change the world, the better. They need to get tough and dirty and feck shit up. I don't think they have the stomach for it though. Look back at what civil rights and Vietnam protestors went through. They got the shit kicked out of them, got shot, murdered even and struggled mightily to achieve significant change. They learned quickly that songs and goodwill got them nowhere.

I bet few of these kids even carry out that threat to boycott school.

I doubt this is a few thousand marchers - its more like a movement that will rival the Tea Party in terms of its seismic effect on which party will control the Congress going forward. Even Steve Bannon correctly understands that MeToo is the biggest threat to Trump and the GOP will have in the coming cycles.

Its on the radar but history suggests it will fizzle out. Occupy was significantly bigger and more high profile and ultimately it had little impact. The annual Earth march gets massive numbers of attendees but it is a one day event then its forgotten.

MeToo is a threat to Trump because he is a dirty rotten scoundrel and is vulnerable to their messages. I just can't see that movement staying relevant very long. It needs fuel and they are running out of celebrities to step forward.

I think one key point here that is emerging is that with gun control there is a concrete call to action unlike Occupy but more like the Vietnam War protests.

The biggest problem with Occupy is they had no concrete call to action and none of their speakers ever had a clue how to call out what was actually wrong with the financial system - They should have enlisted Barry Ritholtz and Nouriel Roubini to be their head speakers. Instead they just criticized "Wall Street" and never had a plan.

Here we have some very concrete calls to action that have majority public support (universal background checks, remove private seller loophole, ban domestic abusers from being armed) that even the NRA lady indirectly conceded ground on. So I feel there could be a window of opportunity on this issue in 2018.

Rubio ended up looking like a total dope, should have avoided going in hindsight. That NRA woman wasn't really pressed enough on specifics. Might have been better if she was brought out along with the Democratic politicians who could have pressed her on specific legislature the NRA have encouraged/blocked.

Over 1600 people have been killed in mass shootings in the US since Sandy Hook in Dec 2014... no changes to gun laws in the US.

2996 people died during the september 11th attacks which led to over a decade of US military reponse in the middle east, laws enabling private security armies and an erosion of personal freedoms in the US.

Someones interests are being well served here.

Rubio at least had the balls to present himself on a public forum. Rick Scott didn't even meet the students waiting outside his office citing schedule issues.

Not to mention the sheer amount of innocent civilians on both sides murdered in cold blood during these wars on terror. Thoughts and prayers to the poor innocent Americans sent to fight and the poor innocent Middle Easterns who lost their lives.

That's an incredibly optimistic way to look at it - sadly I think Trump is much more likely to spawn many 'mini-trumps' in the future simply because he actually made it to the Presidency - he has now set out a way of winning that guarantees the support of a majority of Americans. Racism - 'fake' news - conspiracy theories - all that bullshit is now mainstream and I'm afraid it's likely here to stay in America.

He could well do that but the basic demographics don't add up for the Trump cabal. Every cycle, millions of new young voters who typically vote progressive will be added to the voter rolls and during the same period millions of baby boomers, many of whom are sympathetic to Trump, die off, so its not hard to see that the tide will soon turn, and turn in a big way.

Why did nobody ask Rubio if he would take money from the KKK because they supported his agenda? His answer on NRA money was pathetic.

What they could do with is a sympathetic voice in government. Imagine if someone who really cared was to be made president. Then something might get done.
I'm pretty sure we had that sympathic voice but roadblocks were thrown up along the way. Gaining the majority in the house and to a lesser extent the senate has become critical- probably more important than who is President.

Does that explain 8 years of impotence on the matter?
Do you think he looks in the mirror and says, "I did the best I could."

No I don't disagree at all Obama was way too much of the nice guy in all this. I obviously won't go as far as the Don to pin all blame for the Russian meddling on Obama as he clearly was caught in a political pickle on that one but at some point you just wished he would have said - feck those guys. I'm the President and I'm hearing the majority of the people, not the majority of the house.

Obama's fatal mistake was to attempt to be bipartisan with the GOP during a unique window when he could've done anything he wanted because the Dems controlled both branches. He should've done gun control then, but instead he kicked the can and then the GOP roared back into power in 2010 and that was that.

Even if Obama had done something in his term, Trump would have covertly or overtly repealed most laws by now or put in steps to weaken things.

I don't think he would've been able to repeal the laws. Its one thing to drag ones feet in terms of imposing stricter gun control laws, its another to (in the face of mass shootings) have the political leverage to repeal existing laws.

Starting to get a bit concerned over Trump and others language regarding 'Sicko's' which I have to guess is meant to cover the whole gamut of Mentally Ill. I don't know what proof there is that the young man responsible for the shootings is mentally ill because what seems to have been left out of the narrative is that the shooter was a disturbed, disenfranchised youth, violent and discontent with his life, no doubt unwell but a combination of life circumstances leading to behavioural issues following a lack of interventions rather than the classic 'oh this is why he shouldn't have got to this point - he was mentally ill'. Some of his influences were hate sites including a white supremacist group and I would even include the rantings and poor leadership of a mental midget racist in the White House.

In other circumstances we might say he was radicalised, if he wasn't white you can bet which way this would be going but there seems to be a lack of principles involved here.

He had the presidency, the Senate and the House in 2009-10 and he decided to do nothing then. They had 60 seats in the senate then. They did nothing to prevent sale of semi automatics, bump stocks, high capacity magazines and other assault guns. What a fecking joke. Actions speak louder than words. Your tweet is meaningless. People want real action. Sadly to say, Obama is not a progressive. He's centre-right or at very least a centrist who just doesn't have the conviction or the desire to do anything other than maybe incremental change. His legacy is zero. He's not even a tenth of the president Lyndon Johnson and Theodore Roosevelt were. Sanders has done a million times more to bring progressive issues to the fore and into the mainstream than Obama. Clown.

They had 60 seats for about four months.

And you want Tulsi Gabbard to run next time :D

That's not an excuse. They could have gotten votes from the other side. Wasn't that Obama's wet dream? Bipartisanship for the good of his country. The bloke needs to just go away. His legacy is zero. He will never be LBJ, Teddy Roosevelt or Lincoln.

But he's the media darling so he gets away with everything. What a pisstake.
