Manchester United 2:1 Chelsea

Post-match discussion

Sun, 25 February 2018

Survived their early onslaught and were lucky when they hit the post so early on otherwise could have taken a different turn. 2nd half we came back and showed authority which hasn't been seen for a good while. Pogba motm for me! Mourinho the tactition!

Yes, a great win! Only saw the last 30 mins but we looked very very good and you could see we were going to win it.

Good second half performance.

We were a bit lucky to get the 3 points. Haven't seen replays but it looked like their goal for 2-2 should have stood.

Lukaku MOTM.
His Hip was offside. You can score using your hip, so he was off.

It went nowhere near the goal, it was just a clearance. I think it was going out for a throw-in in the Chelsea half.

Shame. It was Beckham-esque in my head. Thanks

Haven’t had a chance to put my two pennies in until now, needless to say I am delighted by today’s result.

After a shaky first half defensively we tightened up a bit second half. Still not as secure as we should be but Matic really became a brick wall in that second period. If only he could pass like Carrick...

Lukaku was brilliant, as he has been lately. The team functions much better with 433, not just cos it suits our midfield but because Lukaku can roam without a #10 in his way. He’s the sole focal point and he’s flourishing.

Credit to Mou for seeing Lingard could make the difference. Don’t get some of his decisions but when we get the job done you can’t complain.

Great game for Lukaku. That one rune where he launched himself was awesome.

The pure definition of attacking the space :p

a couple of thoughts.....

when was the last time we came from behind to win a game against a decent side- good spirit from the players

Jesse Lingard' s movement was exemplary... don't understand why other players like Martial and Sanchez were so static

I totally agree with Jose. Attitude and passion trump tactics and formation everyday of the week.

We talk a lot about how the formation and tactics have been our problem but I keep saying that if our boys - especially the big names - show up for 90 minutes in every game, we will be a very tough nut to crack for any team. Even though we won today, I still noticed the same problem in the first half. Too many of our players simply don't bring their A-game to the pitch for 90 minutes on a consistent basis.

Lukaku impressed me today, his desire more than anything.

Unexpected result, but deserved based on the second half display. And for the first time in a long while I thought this was a much better cohesive performance.

Unleashing Pogba was key. And Matic stepped up. I would like to see the same setup moving forward. May be a couple of changes like Shaw and Herrera (once he is fit).

And to those saying Martial didn't do enough, I partly agree. But at the same time he might have been asked to be more cautious. I still think he should start on the left. And Sanchez shouldn't try to do it all by himself this is a team sport.

Lukaku's been good for a long time but it was so important for him and the team to get on the scoresheet and put in a MOTM display. Let's see him do that against Liverpool in a few weeks too

First half was mostly disappointing, but Lukaku's goal was a real shot in the arm just before HT. He also did superbly for the second goal. Overall a good day and a good result when it was required.

We probably need better full backs, I love Ashley Young and he is a model professional but if Luke Shaw can't displace him from the team, we need to sell him and get new players. But great win nonetheless. Need to consolidate 2nd place.

A lot of people can’t seem to distinguish between a great result and performance.

The former is obviously more important but it’s concerning that the latter is a complete rarity for us these days.

We were absolutely terrible in the first half and improved in the second, although I ultimately believe the reason we won the game is that Chelsea ran out of steam.

I’m really pleased with the result but highly concerned with the direction we are taking, especially when you look at the likes of Pogba and Sanchez, both of whom were well below par.

Thought the formation was interesting. Was like a 4-4-2 diamond with the ball then a 4-2-2-2 without it. Pogba Sanchez in front of McTomminay and Matic.

As bad as it looked early on, I wouldn't be mad if we stuck with this until the end of the season (although we wont). It addresses two of my main gripes with our play in bigger games the last year and a half. Being overrun with two midfielders and Lukaku being isolated as our wingers get pushed too far back defensively. The first goal showed what having good players in close proximity to each other can yield. Give them the rest of the season to try and develop that?

All in all, great 3 points and hopefullu a catalyst to kick start the rest of the season

An important win, sets us up for the remainder of the season. You could sense the relief, and even to an extent, surprise at the result. Confidence was taking a bit of a battering, and we needed some inspiration, from somewhere.

I didn't see first half, although I was listening and for the first 30mins, it sounded like the familiar story. Lukaku scoring an important goal in a big game gave him a boost, and he won the game for us in many ways. I can only hope that settles him down a bit.

Pogba brought his class and prescence to the team. Matic and especially McTominay were very good. McTominay really made me feel great today. Smalling, and Lindholf were effective and no-nonsense. Smalling has been playing very well... he isn't a baller, but he is a good centre-half, and likes being a Man Utd player.

HOWEVER... the game also highlighted the problems we have as an attacking unit. We seem quite a way away from being a fluid, cohesive unit going forward, you could see the number of times the midfield three, or back four, had possesion and did not have any options, or 'plan' to move the ball around, and putting together a plan that can threaten, or pull the opposition around. Where was Sanchez actually playing? I feel for him.

Martial, well, I continue to be unpopular on here when I question his qualities, and he needs to really consider his progress as a player. He is far, far, far too one-dimensional. He will always be considered a v good squad player, unless he can raise his game up a level. He is fit, young, powerful, and should be the hungriest player on the pitch. He's a forward at Man Utd.

Lindgard makes more of a difference that Martial. Why? Lindgard is simply more street-wise. His form fluctuates, wildy at times and that may be the Lindgard thing.. but he does have an eye for the big moment.

Martial? I have no idea what he is thinking.. does he want to be a very top player? Does he already think he is? He did well for the first goal, but his performance was, as it has been far too often, rather ineffective. But Mourinho doesn't help him, or any of the attacking players, I grant him that.

I think too many people especially the pundits gave too much credit to Chelsea. In the second half as soon as we get the ball they all get up and park the bus. They were more defensive in the second half than us. I think we had the better chances though they hit the post early on and was certainly the better team in the first 15 to 20 minutes but from then on we had control mostly.
The way the pundits and the commentators spoke as if we were hanging on for dear life for the 90 mins and were lucky to score two goals.

Still shite, but a wins a win

Mouriniho with his defensive obsessions totally cost us the first half. He set up to counter two avenues for Chelsea, McTominay man marking Hazzard and Martial and Lukaku staying up to keep their back 3 deep and prevent the type of goal we lost to in the away game. Also Alexis was marking Drinkwater. This left their wing backs totally free and we were lucky not to be battered in the first half

What pisses me off about Mouriniho is there is no attempt to sort our attack out. The defensive set up left us unbalanced, so it came down to individual brilliance to make a goal. This is why we struggle going forward.

Mouriniho has to go

Great win, 6 points clear now for top 4 race, with Chelsea playing City next we have a great chance next weekend.

Very happy with the win, overall we did well. One thing that jumped out at me, though was Chelsea’s first goal. Valencia crosses straight into 2 Chelsea players without a United player anywhere near ‘em. They cut us up right up the middle and the defense couldn’t handle it.

This isn’t the first time this season I’ve noticed that not only can we be wasteful in attack, we’ve actually lost possession when we’re committed forward that has cost us dearly on the counter.

Surely this is something that happens, but also something to improve on. We easily jump on mistakes around our goal, because it’s obvious, but we make mistakes in the final third that cost us as well sometimes.

Still, chuffed with the result. Played much better in the second half, and very good performance for Lukaku against a big team.

The win felt fairly routine today. Apart from Chelsea playing better in the first half, it never really felt like they would score a second and didn't really have any clear cut chances after that. Besides the offside goal and the 110th minute corner, the last 10 minutes played out quite comfortably.

Interviewer to Drinkwater: "What can you improve on?"
Drinkwater: "I think we can improve on not conceding as many goals and scoring more goals."

The intelligence of the modern footballer really does despress me sometimes.

I don't understand the onside claims from Chelsea. Morata's shoulder was offside so it's the right call. Didn't they disallow Mata's goal the other week because his knee was offside?

While we still don't seem to have a real game plan, that was a good show of tram spirit which is going to be critical over the next few weeks. Last month has seen the team look not particularly bothered and it's led to increased frustration. The response to their goal was good and then we kept it going after halftime - exactly what you want from the team. Hopefully the front 3 will continue to develop an understanding like they showed on the equalizer. McTominay been talked about as helping Pogba but Matic definitely looked to benefit from his presence today too. Now just can't overlook Palace away.

Possibly he was being sarcastic tho no?

Absolute genius by Mourinho with the 422. Relieves pogba and Sanchez from real defensive duties but gives them massive freedom to run. Shocked Conte you could tell and they couldn’t deal with it

I missed the match today typical we win lol. Was it good play by us or were chelsea poor?

Pogba was man of the match for me.

It was a brilliant match today, not only was it great to get three points, but hopefully now we have the blueprint we've been lacking to go toe to toe with the biggest teams. Big wins mean big trophies, and if we ride our luck and play how we did today, there could be a big trophy or two for us this season.
