Day 4: Costa Rica vs Serbia, Germany vs Mexico , Brazil vs Switzerland

Have to agree, that ref was really impressive given how back and forth (pace of the game) and physical the match was. Definition of composure.

Refereeing at this tournament has been great. So much better than the clueless English refs we are used to.

Ref is great, calm and composed making all the right decisions. Imagine Mike Dean with VAR he'll be using it at every opportunity to get the camera on himself.

Seems like others loving him too, shows how starved we are of good referees in the EPL!

Thought Serbia deserved that, had a bit more about them in final third.

They really need a better striker, dominant and created chances but mitrovic looked pub level out there

So far, the European teams have been on top (at least score-wise) against their non-European rivals (Iceland drew, but that obviously was a good result for them). Brazil may be the first to break that trend.

Do they really need VAR for that?!
Considering nobody saw what happened, I think it's quite fair to use it there and deal with it with the game still going on, otherwise we'll be getting situations where retrospective yellows are being handed out left, right and centre, and I don't think anybody wants that.

However, the downside is that it might set a dangerous precedent where a player can force a VAR decision and a card every time he feels a hand on his face by going down theatrically, considering that the Serb was trying to break free from a player holding him back.

if people didn't know already we signed Milnkovic-Savic younger brother (a goalkeeper) but released him after he couldnt secure a work permit

Don't know why people are moaning about VAR being used. Would you rather have an extra commercial break before the next game?

They're even moaning about it when there's a genuine incident/foul to be reviewed (ending in a yellow/red card).

Milinkovic didn't have a great game but was visibly a couple levels above everyone else on the pitch

Why are people wondering why was VAR used for that incident? Ref didn't see it so he used VAR to check it out. It's great, nothing goes unnoticed.

That Rukavina sub sums us up in essence, instead of going for it, we pussy out, go into safe mode to run as less as possible.

VAR fecked up there. That scuffle with Matic, the #9 for Costa Rica shouldve been sent off. Slapped Milovojevic clearly. Tsn analyzing it now with Howard Webb, pretty obvious when they highlight it.

Wouldn't say they're quality. Not enough in defence, nor attack. They're functional, with very little creativity. Should be enough to get out of the group, that's it.

If you don't talk about big teams, but two middle tier teams playing against each other, I think Serbia is solid all around. Plus they have one of the best Fullback in the tournament and 2 of the best midfielders around. That is not enough of course to hack it against the likes of Brazil, but I think they compare favorably against other mid-tier teams like Switzerland or Sweden.

So when the VAR told the referee to check that incident, it was because they deemed it a red card. Ref checked and decided to give yellow. Fantastic from the ref, poor from VAR that was never a red card.
