The response on twitter has been funny to read but is only generating more clicks and exposure for the gutter press journos who thrive on such controversy. The idiots being abusive have just allowed them to swing the story back around to "abuse of the media".

English fans would be better served organising a one day boycott. One day where people didn't buy newspapers, blocked the smug gobshites on twitter and refrained from visiting websites affiliated with the journalists in question would have a huge impact and serve as a reality check for the smug, entitled groupthink of the press.
 
Even though it was klopp-esqe I liked the way he went to Jesse when he was subbed. Can’t imagine hodgeson or capello etc doing that.

The players really seem to respond to him well.
 
Too early to tell but he has been spot on in everything so far. The way how he dropped Rooney and Hart from the team showed that he is a no nonsense manager, something that has been lacking from England's team forever.

Really don't think those two decisions were difficult. He would have looked a bit nuts to include them.
 
Still think we'll get found out against decent teams, Panama and Tunisia are not the Italy or Uruguays we faced in the last world cup.
 
Seems like a decent guy, and he's made some sensible but brave calls with players. Obviously still unproven against the best, and we can expect him to fall short. Will be interesting to see if he gets savaged when he does.

They weren't difficult decisions for Allardyce and Van Gaal too, but they kept playing Rooney (and Hart in case of the former) despite being utter shite.

Heck, even Mourinho needed around 6 months to bench Rooney.

Was daft but I think in those cases, that was still before the verdict was firmly in on Rooney in the wider media (it took a long, long time for people to wake up).

When Van Gaal was still here we had tons of posters here who remained faithful to Rooney and thought he was simply in bad form. I was one of those who wanted him (at least) benched from 2014 onwards so I remember the frustration of it.

I think for Southgate that debate had firmly passed. Rooney had just captained England in the EUROs, getting put out by Iceland, while being one of the worst performers in the tournament. He had all the backing he needed really from that point on.
 
The three lions 98 video starts with him missing the pen against Germany. What a redemption if we win it with him as manager.

I disagree, it was a very big decision to make, and one previous managers at club and country had fudged for too long.

However, I think he took too long to get rid of Hart, and could have given Pickford more experience in qualifying. He’s clearly got a group of players who want to play for him and England, which is something we haven’t had for a long time.

I don’t know if anyone closely followed the Republican debates for the 2016 US Presidency, but he would be Jeb Bush. Bland and milquetoast.
 
I really like him, his attitude is just right and although he might not have the experience of Allardyce and Hodgson or the pedigree of Capello, he seems well liked by the media and players and that’s what matters.

Why then the brave Sam Allardyce didn't bench Rooney (that was after Euros too), instead said that he cannot tell to Rooney where to play when Rooney decided that he is a midfielder again? And Rooney had the gut to say that he'll retire after the world Cup while being the worst player in the team for some time.

Southgate came and he just didn't call him, making space for younger and better players. With Allardyce or Hodgson, Rooney would have still been captain.
 
To be fair to the guy I gave him zero channce of doing anything but he has built a decent young team with a system that actually works to get the best out of the players at his disposal.

I think England will make the semi finals.
 
England impress me and it starts with southgate, has an identity that is somewhat unique and a clear plan on what to do with a squad of players who have no 'baggage' and also no pressure of expectation. May not be enough to win it But I hope they do so since k am not really supporting any team and the england squad has the most number of united players.
 
I’ll reserve my judgement until England play a half decent team.

England won’t win anything with Pickford on goal. I guess Southgate is blind to the big deficiency of his team, but it is plain to see he is the weakest link.

Not sure where you are getting that from. Southgate comes across as a stern and determined guy most of the time.

Maybe you are mistaking "plain looking" with "yes man". Southgate is not flashy like Mourinho or has a bald head like Pep, but he is clearly in-charge here.

I am really liking him btw. This England side has a likeable quality about it, manager and players. Bar Dele Alli ofc.

Mourinho had already dropped Rooney and the verdict about him had already dropped in the media by then. It was much simpler for Southgate to drop Rooney compared to Sam.

I bet had Southgate been in Allardyce shoes he wouldn't have dropped Rooney either.

Gareth Southgate has already done the opposite of fall short. He is the first man in maybe 20 years to form an England team (rather than a collection of 11 players without the right attitude). So-called big-name managers since Hoddle haven't been able to do that.
The days of Eriksson/Beckham/Capello/Gerrard seem - thankfully - well in the past.
 
Beat Belgium and people will really start believing. Interesting to see if we can score enough vs a decent side to make up for the defence.

This England team is likeable which can't be said of the previous iterations. Even if they lose in the knockout rounds, it feels like Germany of 2010 rather than the usual walk of shame.
 
It is easily the most enjoyable England to watch, despite that in terms of players quality it is nowhere as good as the teams of last decade.

But we all know that a team is much more than a collection of players, and Southgate seems to have done a good job of building a team.
 
Funny how England haven’t played anyone decent but Belgium have played the same teams.

That said, can’t say I’m overly confident about the defence but expect they’d be more disciplined against better opponents
