Day 17: France-Argentina, Uruguay-Portugal.

I can't fathom anyone (outside of their own nation not participating or having been knocked out) wanting the narrative of Messi winning the WC with Argentina to not happen. As a completion of a great story, it is absolutely the best possible outcome for footballing neutrals. In decades to come, it will be more regrettable that a generational talent like Messi doesn't win the WC. Even the most ardent of critics, deep down, will want Messi to achieve this great feat with Argentina. Football is nothing, if not, about stories. My heart says Argentina, but my head says France with their quality, yet, we still yet say Argentina, because, in these things you cannot split heart and head.

Jesus christ. What's the weather like in Messi's colon this time of year?

Imagine how we would feel now if we did match the 130 odd million to sign Dembele like a lot of posters begged Utd to do.
There would be at least threw threads saying the same thing on the go.

Had a feeling the Argentinian manager would go with a three man midfield. Despite beating Nigeria, they looked very susceptible to counter attacks. With France having better quality than Nigeria in the final third, you'd expect them to be punished if they went with a two man midfield, especially with Banega being one of the two midfielders.

Having seen both teams, I expect it to be a tight encounter.

Will be interesting to see Messi back in that false nine position.

Argentina has to die with an Enzo-Mascherano midfield, don't they?.

This team feels more balanced towards counter-attack football than defending with the ball, let's see if they pull it off or if the defense gets exposed today.

Argentina is such a difficult squad to make a best XI out of - I mean you’d think surely one of Aguero / Higuain should be playing instead of one of the midfielders (who are pretty average), but then again they’ve not looked great in a 4-2-3-1 so far.

Pretty excited to see Messi in a false 9 position again. I wonder if Dybala could have played behind him instead of one of the midfielders. Or maybe stick him on the left and pull Di Maria back to CM like he played in his final Madrid season.

Just something about that line up doesn’t look like it’s getting the best out of the talent in the squad.

Can't see why anyone would want Argentina to win this match unless they're from there. Terrible team and just very unlikable with a lot of players who have caused us grief over the years.

Formation makes sense to me. Having Di Maria and Pavon out wide allows them to keep their width and draw men wide for Messi to exploit in the hole/centrally. Also, not having Messi at the right allows for Pavon to support the defensive transition, just like Di Maria on the left. Yes, it leaves out Higuain and Aguero, however, it provides more defensive solidarity on the defensive transition and has the bonus of putting Messi on the ball higher up the field where he can do some damage. It's more akin to Barca during Pep reign with Messi employed in the same role. Designed to get the most out of him.

Argentina can win this. They still have one of the best players in football history in their team. France beware.

I will be rooting for Argentina and I will be rooting for Portugal today. Come on Messi and Ronaldo!

There are many great players who never won the WC: Di Stefano, Cruyff, Puskas, Cristiano, Platini, Zico, Baresi...

Why do I have to cheer for Argentina or Messi? Can't I cheer for Colombia or England or Belgium if I'm a neutral? Don't understand this absolutist attitude.

Poets don't win titles;)
Lyric poets to be more specific. Those you see reciting poems about the state of the heart with the hand in the chest.

I think it's the fact 3 of their 4 best players are on the bench

Well yeah, that was one of the points of the post.

The other was that it's difficult to come up with an actual functioning best XI hence their struggles so far.

I find it VERY easy :D

At Barca he had Xavi / Iniesta dominating games, possession and territory which was the reason he had this constant supply higher up the field. He didn't need to drop back as that Barca team was so dominant there was no requirement to.

Looking at that Argentina line up it just doesn't look like they'll have anywhere near the level of supply Messi was given at Barcelona. It'll be interesting to watch though, I can see Messi needing to drop deeper to try and gain some possession but maybe the midfield will surprise us.

fecking Giroud leading the line for France  Criminal how you can not bring Benzema, for whatever political reasons, it's not Jeremy Kyle it's football. Argentina have won this

Don't presume to speak for everyone.

That's about the closest his hands are getting to a medal.

Going with Argentina and Portugal wins. Messi vs Ronaldo is fated to happen IMO, the footballing gods won't deny the drama.

I hate the cult of personality surrounding Messi and Ronaldo (and to a lesser extent Neymar). I could not care less if they both missed the final through suspension and someone like Quaresma or Dybala stole the show.

As you say, football is about stories, I just don't like the predictable ones!

It's too difficult to cheer for them. Too many unlikable players. I'm siding with France.

It is quite easy actually, at least for me. I dont like their current side, but their national teams in the 90s were likeable filled with legends all over the pitch

Giroud must have nudes of Deschamps. There's no other explanation. He's an alright finisher with zero pace. Most average player in that French squad.

Did you not see the difference he made in France's second game? Having 3 greedy midgets upfront will get you nowhere.

I think it might be a goal fest. France to win by two goals.

I reckon France and Uruguay will progress through.

You forgot Areola.:wenger:

Has Dembele done anything of note in the games he played? Why would he deserve to start?

Why isn't Benzema there? Is it that thing with the gargoyle?

Has been out favour since he blackmailed his teammate with a sex tape:lol:

That's about the closest his hands are getting to a medal.

You had to use the term "medal", didn't you?

But probably, the fact that they just resort to use him as a false 9 at this stage of his career after years of playing deeper with Argentina screams panic to me.
