Day 17: France-Argentina, Uruguay-Portugal.

This World Cup is so great.

I agree. It's so much fun to see players with such passion and it has had so much drama. I also really like the VAR and hope the PL introduces it soon.

Those memories of Eder are still fresh enough to ease the pain.
I have no problems regarding football mate, sometimes people forget this is just a simple game, not a question of life or death, respect your opponents when they beat you and everything will be fine.

All in all a good Saturday of football, respect for the winners and glory to the losers. ;)

I thought the ref in the Portugal-Uruguay game was brilliant, tried to let the game flow as much as possible, which was difficult given the gamesmanship and was having none of Suarez's face clutching cheating ways.

Actually the opposite.

Now we can enjoy the tournament in peace.

Yes, without either time one of them so much as farts being another discussion point in who is the goat.

Answer, I don't care.

The brazilians created a rendition of "Bella Ciao"(THE Italian Partisan song) called "Messi Ciao":lol::lol:

Now to stop with negativity regarding a good Saturday of football I want to congratulate France and Uruguay, and respecting all the French posters here I will from now on support Uruguay. Suspect I will not bring any kind of luck to them.

Anyway from those I can remember @antohan @JPRouve @Sayros @kouroux @izec congratulations for a good Saturday of football, and for those like @IFC 1905 @Peyroteo @SportingCP96 @barros @Infordin we got what we deserved, nothing to be ashamed.

@Arbitrium Enjoy your football and don't waste your time trying to push me, if you want to have the good football talk I am more than open, if it is the typical Ronaldo vs Messi discussion count me out.

Thank you bro. Whatever happens next is a bonus for me. I am happy and proud. We can beat Uruguay but it will be tougher

@SCP Uruguay were a pretty dirty team and it got frustrating but yes, it's impossible to not apreciate what they do. Congrats @antohan, still think we deserved at least extra time but it's football and things can't always fall the same way. Godin is a monster too and he deserves the recognitions he's getting.

The talk about the game will be at how out of ideas we looked offensively but I think that will happen to everyone who faces Uruguay too starting with France in the next game, our biggest problems were on the defensive end and not attacking. The goal they conceded was the only goal scored against them in 2018 which is remarkable but you can't let this team get the lead twice, after the way we pathetically gave up the lead in the Spain game I knew we weren't going far and today showed why.

At least we have the futsal to soften the blow

I am not anti French just surprised to come here today and to see a thread dedicated to a defeat. Honestly it was a good Saturday of football, much better than the last Euros, if France wins I will not be sad. ;)

This World Cup is so great.
Yeh. The best World Cup in the last 2 decades, imho. A lot of exciting games with great great goals, even on the 1st rounds.

Any team can look world class in one time, then look trash in the next game. But so far, the best teams progress.

Quite frankly Uruguay did to us what he did a lot for other teams. I am the least typical portuguese regarding moral victories.

Patricio should have done better regarding Cavani second goal. I am going to surprise a few here, but even with our problems I think we played our best game today, but it was related with the fact they scored so early, which tells a lot about Santos mentality. After all when they want they can play football, even with more or less individual quality.

Regarding the futsal, you know if we had the same sort of mentality regarding our professional football as we have on our futsal department everything would be fine. We just need more persons like Miguel Albuquerque. ;)

Lmao. Just saw a clip of the ref spraying water in Otamendi’s face after he did the same to Giroud

Argentina NT is overrated..

They haven't beat a Top 5 team in forever in an official matches (France, Brazil, Spain, Italy or Germany)

Their last 8 results against one of those big sides are : 4-3 France, 3-0 Brazil, 1-1 Brazil, 1-0 Germany, 4-0 Germany, 3-1 Brazil, 3-0 Brazil, 4-1 Brazil.

They have scored 5 goals and received 22 goals..

((sqzicar)

Its because its the third world cup in a row that 90% of Argentinian songs are about Brazil and Brazilians are sick of them. In general is very rare a Brazilian music in wc talking about a rival.

On another note I can see Uruguay really struggling in the next WC, Godin, Suarez and Cavani will all be over the hill by then and I doubt they'll get 3 world class players like those coming up at the same time.

Yeah. Still if they can get to another semi final they haven’t done mad out of that generation. That would be 2 World Cup semis and a Copa America in 2011.

Argentina - France - What a game that was. How can you score 3 goals and still lose a world cup match? Incredible. Mbappe was absolutely lightning, what a player. If France had lost that game i would've laughed, it was probably one of Argentinas worst teams ever.

Uruguay - Portugal - Another fantastic game. Cavani's second goal was superb. Fully deserved to go through.

Christ on a bike that run from Mbappe for the penalty . (Even thought I thought it was outside the box but Rojo's defending was absolute prison sushi.)

France starting to stretch their legs after sleepwalking through the groups. Might benefit them with the extra energy.

Great day of football. One-man teams got eliminated.

Uruguay-Portugal was a close game, though. Cavani and Suarez are superb, and if Cavani won't play vs France they're done.

Argentina though... Oh look, what a great group of offensive players they have there. It would be a real shame if someone left them all on the bench... Good job.

Messi has been carrying that team for ages now. They were doing so badly without Messi in the qualifiers and just barely made it to the world cup. The other teams have mostly figured out to surround Messi with 3-4 men at all times and nobody else has been stepping up to use that space despite the team being full of supposedly world class attackers. Never seen such a disjointed team over a long period.

Brazil must be shitting it watching France.

I watched the whole game and I'm still not impressed at all with this them. In fact, I'm even disappointed with them taking into account they had a golden opportunity to finally show off their real potential against a totally disorganized squad which had a very fragile defensive system.

Great squad, of course. However, apart from Mbappé's individual skills and the French fourth goal, the team in general showed nothing that special by beating a shambolic team which somehow was able to lead the match for a while. Deschamps hasn't taken advantage of this good generation. Brazil could've spanked this chaotic Argentinian squad (arguably the worst one I've ever seen) as they did in Qualifiers'18.

This French team has more individual quality than the 2016 team, better defensive line, Kanté, Mbappé and all that, but looking at today I feel they will not find the same level of spaces against Uruguay.

That said they are favourites vs Uruguay, they better recover Cavani.

To be fair I haven't seen anything special from Brazil either, with the exception of Countinho's individual brilliance. Still massive favorites but no magic so far.

Shame we won't see France vs. Portugal, what might've been a clash between the two greatest anthems in the World Cup.

Uruguay also great too, no problem with that.

For me Portugal's anthem is the best in the world. I'm not Portuguese and your anthem get's me all pumped up and teary every time I hear it. Great lyrics and amazing build up.

Uruguay has a solid defensive system and, in my opinion, Godin has been the best center-back in this tournament. I highly doubt France would build their game against that wall with the same ease as they did against Argentina. I highlighted their fourth goal, but that Argentinian positioning was atrocious too and made their job much easier.

Neither of them haven't showed a sparkling performance yet. My point there is that I don't think France has been playing that well to the point of frightening Brazil (like the other guy was suggesting). We might argue whether it's reciprocal though.

Yes Argentina was shambolic, I think even the team managed by Maradona was better than this one. Sampaoli was completely lost, 4 different tactical systems and lineups for 4 matches.

Definetely Uruguay will be harder to score, but don't know if Uruguay can score a goal against France, lets see.

How many times have we seen a team tear up the group stage only to falter at the knockout stage? And the reverse of that?

With that said, who has been poor the 1st 3 games but getting better? Too early to say, except for France.

:D Surely you know what I mean
I know, but believe me, a lot of Portuguese who live in France don't like that stereotype. Nothing against me, just a reminder. :)

Without a doubt, Argentina made it easy for us when it came to running at them and we weren't the only team who showed it too. Iceland had nice counters, Nigeria had them and Croatia too. It was just a matter of being efficient. With Uruguay it will be much different and if they score first I think they will win because we don't have the football to break down teams like that. Our salvation will only come from individual miracles

I don't know if Uruguay can score creating the same style of play between Cavani and Suarez, to say I doubt any French fullback will completely be "eaten" like Guerreiro, or if Lloris will be so badly positioned for the second goal like Patricio.

Never mind the spaces, actually if they play the same diamond formation the secret is just to move them right and left, of course that is completelly different if you have Giroud and Mbappé with Griezmann coming behind, than having a burdened Cristiano with a stupid donkey like Guedes alongside him.

Not to mention when they were starting to move them the stupid Santos got the subs totally wrong and after the goal we just had the shit crosses to the area again.

I agree with all of that. If we score first and they start to go for it, I think we can beat them with ease but I'm just afraid of them leading first.
Guerreiro last night was probably the worst game I have ever seen him play. Why was he sad and like crying all game long ?

The only thing I can say to you is that I don't think Deschamps is much better than Santos reading the game. Nevermind the training sessions. Even if he worked at top clubs.

I cannot wait for the keys of the team to be given to MBappe because Griezmann is basically a name and not a great performer anymore

Nani not being able to maintain his Euro 2016 form was a key difference. He was huge for Portugal in that tournament, now they have guys like Guedes, who did not look at all ready for this level, always wanting too much time on the ball, indecisive. Hoping for Quaresma to give another moment amid all his immense frustration. Pepe dropping off as well, Sanches not pushing on, leaving a highly pedestrian midfield.
