Let's all Laugh at England

They’re not WUMs. Genuine bitters.

The one thing this World Cup has taught me is how silly the partisan nature of football is, at club and national level. Imagine being so emotional invested in hating another team. It’s odd really.

Think my outlook will change going forward. If City have another belting season I don’t think it will bother me anywhere near as much.
Oh don't get me wrong, a lot are bitter but I think a few are definitely here to stir trouble.

You can do whatever the hell you want. Just don’t expect every football fan from all the neighbouring countries to support your team. That’s been the big eye opener for me in this thread. The expectation that Irish, Welsh, Scottish football fans should support the English national team or else we’re “bitter” (or racist ffs!).

I shouldn’t have called anyone a prick. I had a few drinks on me last night and got a bit wound up. So apologies to @Djemba-Djemba as I think I was pretty harsh in my comments to him and he’s always struck me as a good bloke.

Since when? We always expect the exact opposite.

i suppose after a few drinks and a chaser of empathy it's clear why the England fans are so precious.....

100 years ago they are a major player on the World scene and with Germany on their knees, the US isolationist and France a mess after WW1 you could argue they were the superpower in the world

there's always been major insecurity about the English.... like who calls your territory 'Great' Britain unless you've a major hangup about your dwindling role in the world.

Flash forward 80-100 years and you are the laughing stock of Europe and attempts to stay relevant seems to be doing whatever successive US presidents tell you to do. Hugh Grant had more of a backbone in Love Actually than Blair, Cameron or May.

and here we have the World Cup....Set Piece FC scrape past a couple of third tier teams and they think they are a player again on the World stage

I think it's only fair that we are respectful to England fans and let them milk this moment as let's face it their only notable achievements of the last decade have been Love Island and Britain's got talent

it's coming home
any biting?

I refuse to eat!

England fans have won the Banter World Cup already.

The memes, videos, gags... have been priceless.

I feel like they've slowed down since the Sweden win. Before it was like "these are hilarious because surely we won't win the thing" and now it's like "OMG, we're into the last 4, it may not be an actual joke anymore"

I've met lots of non-English fans who love the memes and video. People with a sense of humour like them. Bitter fans are being triggered though!

I'm not English, have cheered against England only four times, when you've played my NT, rest of the times, I've been wanting them to do well. I was 2 when you reached the semis in 1990, so I understand the hype. Estonia has never played a big tournament, our biggest achievement was getting smashed 5-1 on agg by Ireland at the EURO qualifiers' play-offs and most of us acted as if we won the World Cup by reaching that far. I also love banter and memes. But really, talking about people getting triggered. I'm seeing the salt on these boards myself, but it's not only by the bitter non-English who get triggered. Check the England or Croatia thread. You're allowed to say Modric is slightly better than Dele Alli but that's about it, anything else is seen as a fecking blasphemy, anti-English bias, being bitter and racist.

I'll go and have a look. Modric is about 10 times better than Dele Alli. Croatia have 2 or 3 brilliant players.

For the record, for me I don't expect the home nations to all support one another, there's a rivalry there, as one sided as it might be, I never expect them to cheer us on, especially in football. We've been the (barely) successful older sibling who has gone on to do things, while they've barely left the town they were born in.

I think it's the really random countries that people on here are from that have such genuine bitterness and hatred towards the English and/or the English football team. That's the laughable thing.

Watched RTE’s post match coverage of England’s performance. Very well rounded, half expecting sly digs but I think the current teams likeability shone through.

Only issue is Eamon Dunphy must be trying to jinx the heck out of England!

BBC radio 1, phone in with some idiot squealing it’s coming home. Yea, really sounds tongue in cheek.

These are the comments that grate and people wonder why English fans aren’t universally liked, you come across as acting so superior and condescending I’m not even sure if you’re joking . Yet, during the ratios when bale said wales hadn’t more patiom England seemed to have a coordinated meltdown about it, how dare we speak bad about England !!

I quite the English national team, it’s the fans and media I can’t stomach, while living in wales having to put up with it all

The RTE pundits tend to be far harsher on our own team than England’s. Although, to be fair, harsh criticism is invariably justified.

I see, so when Bale makes a comment (I don’t know what Patiom during the ratios is) England are having a meltdown. Yet comments like the one above is why England are hated. Sounds completely balanced!

We’re in the last 4 of the World Cup and someone dares to believe we’re going to win it. What an absolute idiot. Their complete and utter arrogance sounds far worse than your bitterness.

Passion and euros, I guess you knew that though. Sorry for using my phone and missing the mistakes.
Point stands though, you cry when bale makes a comment but expect everyone to love England.
People are exciting. We’re in a World Cup semi final ffs. You must be a barrel of laughs at a party.

I live in wales, I couldn’t give a shit about it coming home. I’m pointing out that first of all ‘it’s coming home’ is tongue in cheek, but now it’s not because you’re in the semis, or is it still?

I’m happy you’re happy, that’s great, I’ll just have to avoid all tele and radio for a few years

How would I know that? Someone’s getting very defensive.

No the point doesn’t still stand. You’re accusing England supporters of crying when Bale makes that statement, and here you are whinging because a poster made a tongue in cheek comment on a forum. You can’t have it both ways.

Do I expect everyone to love England? Feel free to quote me on that.

I'm not wumming it looked to me like some posters werent too happy about the same people supporting Utd and not England in the world cup that I just wanted to ask if Fergie didnt want England to win the world cup does he get a pass because of his involvement with Utd ?

I wasn't actually suggesting that you were wumming, I know that you were asking a serious question. It was a general comment.

As I've said (and I imagine quite a few others), it wasn't about wanting England to win but the vitriol with which some want England to lose. I'm not sure if Fergie would want England to win but I'm pretty sure that the manager of English football's most successful club side and someone who would currently be managing Jones, Young, Lingard and Rashford in the England squad as well as having previously managed Welbeck and Pope I think? would not actively be wanting England to lose. In fact, I'm sure he'd love to see the experience these players are currently gaining and would be delighted to see them doing well and happy at representing their national team and for once actually enjoying the experience.

Ok, grand. I missed your point. English fans are ambivalent about Irish/Scottish/Welsh teams because they don’t know much about them. That’s fair enough. I’m certainly not expecting or asking anyone from England to root for the Irish football team. Ambivalence is fine.

That is fair for sure.

I personally as an immigrant originally have no real great horse in the race and want all 5 nations on these islands to do well.

However, I do completely understand why people from the other 3 home nations especially don't like England. Doesn't stop me having a little smile when I read some of the posts though. :D

To be fair think Fergie was always the first to rip the absolute piss out of the English lads when we'd fail over and over again. Not sure whose autobiography I read it in, but he always found it hilarious when we'd go out.

It's strange. People can be passionate about an English team like United with a history of fantastic English players; Charlton, Robson, Beckham, Rooney along with the current crop, especially Rashford and Lingard, but cannot find it within them to wish England any success. Is it down to hooliganism in the 80's or is it the perceived arrogance of England fans, who any one with a sense of humour can see, aren't 100% serious with the memes and hype around their chances of actually winning the WC?

I struggle to imagine the same people hating on the likes of France and Belgium and would probably cheer them due to the likes of Lukaku and Pogba starring for both.

Kind of sums up my view of it.

I'm sure he would. I would find it hilarious in his position as well, especially considering how often our best players embarrassed themselves on the international stage. I doubt he was sitting at home actively hoping for England to lose though.

First time I've ever preferred watching England over United. Our horrible football under José plays a big part, but still; never thought I'd see the day.

You would never make it as a Northern Ireland supporter...

Yeah I said that to someone the other day, felt dirty for even thinking it, but it's true.
Yeah, I don't want it to end. Really not looking forward to watching United under José this season anyway, and this tournament has been so much fun.

Having Irish grandparents from both the Republic and North, I support both of them anyway - as they do England. I also like to see Wales do well, too. I don't mind seeing Scotland do well either!

It's why all the hate England get from the other home nations gets to me a bit even though I understand why.

Hate I think is a bit strong however there is definitely some hate in some parts of NI towards the English football team (and England as a whole frankly) though that is for political/historical reasons. Most NI supporters view all other home nations as rivals to a certain degree however on the whole we will wholeheartedly support all home nations if NI do not qualify for a tournament (so most of the time!) - England is a bit different as there is a love/hate thing going on there but for me personally I'm supporting England.

I’m not defensive, ha. And I’m not moaning about just one poster, more like all of the media, TV and radio.

Anyhoo good luck to England, I just hope they lose, guess that makes me bitter :)

Kind of are. That made absolutely no sense and you got uppity when it's pointed out to you.

Yeah ALL the media is like that. :wenger:

Good for you. I hope we win so we can really show you what sickening arrogance looks like. For now though we will stick with demonstrating our joy of getting far further into the competition than any of us dreamed of doing.

 A few memes and wanky Sun headlines? They haven't seen anything yet!

Yeah, hate might've been an unnecessarily strong word on my part! Cool to know you're supporting England (though I gathered as much reading your posts throughout the tournament).

My Grandma(Northern) and Grandad(Republic) being from Ireland and having lived in England for around 60 something years means they both support England, too, and having grown up with them wishing all the home nations well in past tournaments, it just rubbed off on me.

I've enjoyed the Scots and other home nations having a dig, when are their games?

I'm old-ish and the nice thing is that England been able to go into this with lower expectation & pressure, just like the other home nations (& Eire) have had the chance to do in previous competitions over the years. England is always weighed down by that, and usually an inappropriate manager. Let's be honest about this, it could easily have been Allardyce taking this team to Russia!!! Would have have taken a chance on a young, inexperienced team? No probably not. To be risk-averse he'd have thrown in more experience and not had such a seemingly bonded group. Southgate also seemed to be a "F*ck it, let's give this guy a go" almost getting the job by default, but he's been there. He's played for England, he knows how things work, and more importantly how they also go wrong.

What you might take out of this is that the Allardyce scandal birthed this run (like the Leicester scandal birthed that PL win?!) but will the FA learn from that, appointment-wise? No, I doubt it. The FA has been unfit for purpose for a long, long time now and that won't change anytime soon. They may well be dusting down the trophy cabinet now though ....
