Let's all Laugh at England

This was certainly not the same as Italia 90. That one hurt much more since we deserved to go through, were a good team. This time we just weren't good enough. We don't have those game changing players and our football is not that sophisticated......yet! But, it's been a fun ride that is for sure and the team are really likeable, as individuals. They really won fans from all over with their conduct, enthusiasm, togetherness, passion and that is really got them as far as they did, not the skill really. People having a go at them or Southgate should take a look at themselves - we were never really meant to get this far, and you can only work with what you have.

Must admit, this whole thread has been a bit depressing. Didn't know so many United fans disliked England so much. Don't expect them to support us, but sometimes it was a bit ugly. Changed my feelings about the Caf a tad.

This is certainly not the same as Italia 90. During Italia 90 England had quite a great side and ended up losing to a better side. This England is not that great but it should have been considered favourite against the only two decent sides it met (Croatia and Belgium). Instead it lost against both. The Late Sir Bobby would have won against Croatia

If every player from a single team is outside the pitch, the opposing team has the right to start the game and attack immediately or something like that.

I swear i read it here (think it England vs Panama)

Yeah I think Panama tried it against England and got slated for it. Looked like the Croatian goalie was on the pitch in this case though. It's incredibly stupid either way.

I know I lost my rag when some England fans refused to accept why Irish fans would be naturally inclined to want England to lose but even I am a bit taken aback at the vitriol on here since Croatia won. It’s well and good wanting England to lose but seems a bit unnecessary to so gleefully put the boot into fellow Manchester United fans when they’re probably feeling a bit crushed anyway. That’s not cool at all. I thought England played very well last night. For 45 minutes anyway. Nothing much to laugh at really.

Same here really. There's nothing wrong with a bit of ribbing over a loss 'waistcoat Wednesday' 'its coming home' etc but its clear that for a many the derision is a bit more aggressive and unsavory.

It's changed my whole view on the whole point of debating things on here, the number of posters that are interested in any kind of objective a reasonable debate seem to be in the minority. It's all petty point scoring and has felt tedious to me. I think its helped me to aim to be more reasonable and grown up frankly, however.

I always liked to think the caf was a level above the shite I see on twitter, but the world cup have proven it's not really. The anger, lack of reasoning and just willingness to be a dick reigns very much supreme.

If you want to feel better on every match thread 9 out of 10 players were labeled a joke, crap, shit, manager is overrated, the team is awfull and so on, not only England.

On a serious note this might be related with jokes by posters from Ireland, Scotland and so on, anyway trying to have substantive football conversations regarding International Football can go horribly wrong sometimes.

I guess sometimes there are people who mix patriotism with throwing provocative statements around. :)

National teams always induce more stereotypes hence more stupid memes.

"The English are always drunk, The Brazilians always have flair, French players are always revolting."

Hence when a team loses, the ridicule is endless.

You'd never see the caf post those unilad memes during the regular season though.

It's hilarious that the song "it's coming home" will be number 1 in the uk this Sunday.:lol:

They're having their fun in a pisstake thread, they don't really hate us as people and their laughter is obviously and ironically tempered by having to follow national teams that are shittier and more laughable than ours. I don't see the problem to be honest.

Laugh as much as you want. We reached a semi final and you bitter lot didn’t.

You can say we had an easier route. (Which we did) but them teams were there on merit. The likes of Sweden qualified over Italy and the Netherlands.

You can quite clearly see improvement under Southgate. We’re actually passing and playing out from the back, and are a team again.

If we had that bit more experience we would of beat Croatia. We should of been a few up at half time, and we dominated that first half. Against a team that was supposed to pass us of the field.

Things are looking good after the Hodgeson era. Well done England. Let the haters hate. I’m proud.

'Ave a pint of lager and calm down.

But that’s not the song is it. The song is called Three Lions.

It is literally a song about how we are never quite good enough - very apt. It was probably no 1 in 1996 (or at least near the top of the charts) and we went out on the semi final then.

Honestly, what people claim to find hilarious, is hilarious in itself.

How can you say that?

And you are talking with someone who has a deep respect for Bobby Robson. Do you actually know what results Robson had at Italia 90? Or Euro 88? It was a great generation of players but even at Mexico 86 they played better, not to mention they failed to qualify for Euro 84 against maybe the best Danish NT from all times.

I repeat, I am a massive Robson fan, after Italia 90 he was well respected in the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, this just to say perceptions sometimes are different than reality.

In 4 years, or even in 2 years at the Euros. Mr Rashford will be a starter. I can't imagine Sterling will continue up top.

Some of the “comments” come across as fairly unpleasant and more in line with the stuff you see on Youtube or Twitter than what is supposed to be a decent football forum.

I also find the “arrogance” angle amusing coming from supporters of a club and fanbase that can be, let’s face it, very arrogant indeed (“not arrogant, just better”, “biggest club in the world” etc).

[QUOTE="kps88

Why were Lingard and Rashford trying to score while Croatia were celebrating?[/QUOTE]

Seriously, though, what the feck is this?!

This is wrong on so many levels.
I actually feel ashamed for them.
Who ever tried this in preschool would get his little cnutish face kicked in.

And the fact that it's Lingard and Rahshers is even more embarassing.
They need slapping.

Oi! Don't blame us! It was your own fault for being there to witness our bigotry! Ya southern ponce!

There's probably still a big element of bigotry there, but it's not as bad as it used to be. From these parts at least the NI fan base used to be nearly entirely Protestant, but it seems people from both sides now go. I remember mates wanting to go when we were younger, but being afraid in case people would somehow know they were Catholic and they'd get a kicking.

It's far from perfect, but things aren't as bad as they used to be.

My entirely uninformed and unscientific take on how the united Ireland rugby team became a thing is simply that rugby wasn't all that popular so it went under the radar a bit. I know it's more popular now, but I don't remember people paying much attention to it back in the day. That's just my wild assumption on the whole thing. Unfortunately our combined 11 in football would still be a bit cack.

Got agree with most of this!

I actually wanted Northern Ireland to do well in 2016

And you have had a more capable manager than us

I haven't seen much unpleasantness. There's bemusement, fairly in my view, at English fans' surprise that not every United fan is fully behind the national team and maybe a touch of bitterness here and there ('England going out has made my WC' hmm) but nothing untoward as far as I'm concerned.

England fans being triggered by a bit of banter seems over the top to me, particularly as there are some very easy counters such as this kind of thing for the Irish lads:

I dunno, I decided to support England this World Cup because unlike England teams of past tournaments I like the players in this side a lot, yet I'm still laughing at them for bottling it in the end and getting horribly exposed when it matters. I suppose laugh at England all you want, but what I really don't get is why some people get really worked up by the whole 'it's coming home' thing. Arsenal fans do it with the whole 'by far the best team the world has ever seen' thing and even we do it with our 'pride of all Europe' chant and not one opposition fan takes it with more than a grain of salt.

It's just a silly phrase from a silly song, let them have fun.

I do wonder what other countries chant in their non-arrogance.

"Please win but only if we're the better team"
"We may win the trophy if we over perform"

Football banter by nature is immature and should be taken light heartedly, Argentina, Spain and esp Germany got absolutely rinsed after their exits, not sure why England fans are taking it to heart and think this type of behaviour is only aimed towards them.

It's just a bit embarrassing to do it to semi-finalists in my view

Out of curiosity, do fans of top clubs in La Liga/Seria A/Bundesliga also laugh and troll Spain/Italy/Germany the same way a lot of United fans laugh at England?
I know plenty of Bayern-fans (not German) who root against Germany. Cannot remember fans of Italian/Spanish teams rooting against Italy/Spain though.

Certainly has for me.

I had a good debate with @Pogue Mahone and so I fully understand why some wanted England to lose and that's more than fair enough, but the aggressiveness and glee some seemed to get out of insulting and trying to wind up fellow Utd fans was disappointing.

Catalan Barcelona fans aren't too fond of Spain I'd imagine.

But do Italy/Spain/German talk up their chances and expect winning the WC even before tournament started? Beside, Italy/Spain/German did win the Cup before in past 20 years, when was England? Do you expect Sweden talk about bringing WC home?
Well yes. Germans have been so bullish that are unbearable, Spanish think that they are God's gift to mankind when it comes to football, and Italians are extremely optimists too. But as you said, the difference is that quite often they also walk the walk, while England pretty much exclusively only talks the talk.

England should be compared with Argentina and Holland (though they're a bit worse considering that both Argentina and Holland have reached finals recently and typically do better than England in tournaments) as being arrogant for the sake of being arrogant but winning feck all for a very long time.

The accusation that England are arrogant is now the thing that's actually arrogant.

If you're basing your assumption of how England fans think based off shite like The Sun or the Daily Mail you're going about it wrong.

I've always liked the England national team, for obvious reasons.

The whole story about the easy way to the final was an absolute shit show though. I'm glad you aren't playing the final for people like Gary Lineker that were posting things like "Give Januzaj the sports personality trophy". It's was petty back then and you should accept people laughing at England for it now.

I'll root for you guys on the next opportunity (except on Saturday of course) :wenger:

Weird few pages and some have taken it to an absurd level. First, no one expected them in the semi-final, second not a single incident that I'm aware of and there are people from Manchester supporting England. Heck, even Cantona joined the party.

Absolutely, the salt off of many on here has made me realise the same. The fact that the England thread was about 10th down yesterday and now there are 4/5 at the top says it all, people were avoiding talking about it. Had no idea that the hatred for England from many was akin to most United fans hate of Liverpool. I think it's strange, but there you go.
