Let's all Laugh at England

Certainly has for me.

I had a good debate with @Pogue Mahone and so I fully understand why some wanted England to lose and that's more than fair enough, but the aggressiveness and glee some seemed to get out of insulting and trying to wind up fellow Utd fans was disappointing.
Just shows how jealous the rest of the UK are really. Anyway we just have to suck it up, it'll make it all the more sweeter when we truly get some success.

I feel if we show the warmth / patience that we have with England this summer, it'll only get better and better.

Aw, bless.

I don't think the England hatred on here is actually as bad as what we've seen recently. It's just each side fed the other and artificially escalated things. What started out as a bit of a fun kept escalating because the other side took it too seriously. "It's coming home" and the media wankfest wound up one set of people, while stuff like "lucky draw" and "set piece team" wound up the other.

Only England who took this piss take thread so seriously, even others from lets all laugh at thread said nation join the banter.

Had no idea that the hatred for England from many was akin to most United fans hate of Liverpool. I think it's strange, but there you go.

A closer analogy for this behaviour would be Stoke fans supposed rivalry with United. Its entirely one way in that for United fans it's neither here nor there but for Stoke it's the be all and end all. I thought of Leeds in the same context but at least Leeds were once top of the pile and vied with United for honours. That partly explains their view of United as peers and rivals whereas with Stoke it's just geographical proximity.

Can't really understand the shock that some people have to know that foreign United supporters don't support England National Team. Why is that a shock? Were you going to support France vs England because of Pogba, Or Belgium because of Lukaku? Did you guys supported Portugal because of Ronaldo? I still remember the wink drama.

It just looks that you are mirrowing your national team dissapointment to foreign fans.

There were lots of reasons for rooting against england.

1: Typical English Fans behavior when outside of their country
2: Most of the biased commentary on Itv and BBC
3: The ikea trashing
4: The Ambulances trashing
5: The feeling that a team that doesnt win nothing were acting like a top class winners of all time
6: All the laughs at created in this forum for other national teams

See, lots of reasons. We can never mix Club football with National team football. I will always root for Manchester United has my second club but i will never root for the England national team

I haven't seen much unpleasantness. There's bemusement, fairly in my view, at English fans' surprise that not every United fan is fully behind the national team and maybe a touch of bitterness here and there ('England going out has made my WC' hmm) but nothing untoward as far as I'm concerned.

England fans being triggered by a bit of banter seems over the top to me, particularly as there are some very easy counters such as this kind of thing for the Irish lads:

I don’t expect non-English United fans to support England (and certainly not if they are Scots or Irish) but the constant pissing on the parade over the last few weeks has been tiring. Also, it is time to put to bed the outdated accusations of arrogance (largely based on a misreading of English humour or extrapolating from garbage like The Sun as being representative of the views of 60m people). Maybe part of it is the limitations of an online forum - if you are face to face, it’s obvious from voice or from body language when no malice is intended with the jokes. In black and white text, it is harder to read nuances.

If every player from a single team is outside the pitch, the opposing team has the right to start the game and attack immediately or something like that.

I swear i read it here (think it England vs Panama)

Seriously, though, what the feck is this?!

This is wrong on so many levels.
I actually feel ashamed for them.
Who ever tried this in preschool would get his little cnutish face kicked in.

And the fact that it's Lingard and Rahshers is even more embarassing.
They need slapping.

Hey don’t forget Ireland

We’re shit and we know we are

But not jealous. Just laughing

We all sang the coming home song in jest buy we can't complain if some take it seriously. Don't know why some of us are taking the banter as I haven't seen any vitriol. Some of the Irish lads I work with were dying for us to lose just so they can rub it in. And they all support English clubs. Think people have to accept that club and international football are different entities. Don't think we were arrogant this tournament but don't expect everyone to see it from your POV either.
Here's what Modric said.

I'm honestly amazed that even needs to be said - there seems to be a problem in England in that there are fans out there who struggle to really support their own national team because of club rivalries. It's utterly bizarre if you ask me. If Northern Ireland's team was full of players from Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal (I wish!!!) I would support them with all my heart.

Think Modric is talking out of his arse. Croatia got plenty of respect. Can you have a laugh, have fun and be humble at the same time? I always thought you could, but according to most on here that's impossible.

What you don't understand is how it is perceived by anybody who is not English.

I remember the glory days on here when English people used proudly boast that united were their own entity and entirely separate from a national team often supported by the worst kind of little englander type bigots from places like burnley and leeds

Good times

The first glimpse of success in a couple of decades after a piss-easy route to the semis and suddenly they are all staunch patriots.

The irony here is non-English Utd fans have been called glory hunters in this thread.

I did not care much about this thread, but dear english supporters: most of the people here are just taking the piss, shouldn't be taken serious / personal.

A bit like any other thread of let's laugh at... (except the rivals thread muahahahaha).

As a Croatian. After this World Cup you lot should close this shameful thread
Shameful thread was created from an English fan as is 'suckers, you're not going to laugh this time', so when you hit, expect to get hit in return. Thread should go in classics.

What you don't understand is how it is perceived by anybody who is not English.

Most of the pre-match analysis was along the lines of “England have a great opportunity to reach the final, particularly as Croatia might be tired, but Modric and Rakitic are top class”. Not seeing the arrogance myself.

I think he has a point. Even here in GER, after Tuesday nights match the gist of 3 out of 4 articles was: "So it is France who ENG will meet in the final".

If you are not English, the it's coming home can be interpreted as arrogance. I don't understand why people fail to get that. We sang it in irony but it's naive to expect other countries to get the irony.

Doubt Modric reads the Caf but you even had some "Croatia are inferior" posts after the loss. Don't think it's so much singing about it coming home that made others see you as cocky.

I always liked to think the caf was a level above the shite I see on twitter, but the world cup have proven it's not really. The anger, lack of reasoning and just willingness to be a dick reigns very much supreme.

Indeed, you’re right. The Caf was pretty much unbearable for the past four weeks.

Normal service resumed last night, however!

I also think all our talk about easier path to the final might have rubbed some of our opponents the wrong way. That could explain the Croatian team sticking the boot in.

The lashing out at anyone on my Facebook is incredibly funny. I dread to think what some of them would do if they lost the league to their bitter rivals with 6 seconds to go.

Nothing to laugh about England to be honest. Finished above Argentina, Brazil, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Italy (didn't even make it)

Let that sink in for a while.

Wait, the none of the English fans singing 'its coming home' actually meant it and it was all tongue in cheek? I feel bad for you guys but sorry thats a flat out lie. it was fecking unbearable and this is coming from someone who wouldn't have given a feck if you guys even won the thing

I agree, very odd indeed. I think the main reasons England are hated can be summed up in two groups. By foreign fans: hooliganism/perceived arrogant, small minded behaviour. By British fans: gloating from England fans.

I'l be honest, I was bothered by the "it's coming home" but it was irrationnel because that was clearly a joke. My problem has been with comments that I have read here and on other sites where english fans were perfectly happy to denigrate other teams and players, I still don't know if they were being serious or not.

The funniest thing of this all is Englishmen demanding people from other nationalities that they should support England, or at least be neutral, cause otherwise you're a prick, a cnut and not a United fan. That is very self-righteous and if nothing else, makes people actually rooting against England and throwing it in your face.

Nailed it

Were Modric & co really sitting in their hotel in Russia reading copies of the UK Daily Mail/Sun and watching Ian Wright talking shite on ITV catch-up?

Also, I think it was mostly billed as "an easy path to the semi-finals" - the assumption was that we'd be getting a thrashing from Spain at this stage of the tournament.

I think a lot of that comes from English fans who would support the Republic, Wales, Scotland etc when they play and don't understand why that isn't reciprocated. It's less of a demand more a lack of understanding.

I think most saw it as a good route to the semifinals, I know I did. We were always going to be up against it because most expected us to face either Spain or Croatia at that stage.

You just don't get irony, it's alright. It's amazing how people still struggle with the concept, even now.

Tbf, England fans deserve to be laughed at because of this stupid "It's coming home" stuff. Majority of people believed England can win it by scoring only from set pieces and beating the likes of Panama and Tunisia. Easy route and a fair bit of luck created this myth that Southgate created a great team good enough to win it. However against any decent opposition England looked hopeless and the reality is they are still miles behind the likes of France, Belgium, Brazil etc.

That might be true, but they were calling anti-United people who aren't even from neighboring countries. I mean there were literally posters who were saying that if you're not from Croatia and want Croatia to win then you're not a United fan and are a prick. Of course then people are going to hit back.

And if I was a Scott, I would have had trouble supporting England just because of that anthem. Regardless, people usually root against the neighboring countries, and usually it is one sided. For example, Swiss celebrated when Germany got eliminated, but I don't think that Germans did it when Switzerland got eliminated. Of course, things change if suddenly the meh team becomes a good team (like Belgium this time around, I don't think that Dutch were supporting them). Mark my words, if ever one of UK teams become really good (like capable of winning it), Englishmen won't look at them fondly. It is okay supporting a shit team, but not okay if they can be more successful than you, and you have to deal with people from that nationality on daily basis.

England fans have sang that song for twenty years. Of course it's tongue in cheek you cloth-eared ass. Did fans "believe" when they got to the semi-final? What fans ever haven't? Why shouldn't they?

This went around the world. He's an influential figure in football, like him or not, and it was perceived very badly in Belgium, Croatia, Sweden... Read the comments below the tweet too. Upon that point it was all jokes and banter regarding England, but most Belgians found it distasteful and completely unnecessary. The rooting against England began at that point. The tweet was even shown on national tv.

How many are actually doing that? Serious question as i've lost track with who's taking the piss and who is serious.

Anyone that does is indeed a twat. I'd rather people engage brains and realise it's a tiny amount though and not really a stick to beat the English with. Most of us couldn't give a flying feck, in fact I'd strongly argue that it really doesn't matter where you are from a fellow United fan is a fellow united fan and only the most small minded people would think otherwise. As for supporting England, I barely have myself over the past few years and if this campaign has done anything well, it's make me interested in the NT again. I don't expect a single person who isn't English to support us though, that's bizarre.
