Mourinho just said we were always fighting for second place in this group

Some people just can't take a dose of reality, all Jose has done is tell the truth. We only reached the knock out stages of the CL last season, and we're a poorer team this season, in a group with Juventus, quarter-finalists last year and finalists the year before. Did anyone really expect us to top the group? All the build up to the match was people praying we didn't get slaughtered 5-0, and we didn't, and yet they're still complaining.

We shouldn't be though, that is the point. We lost no first team players from last season and spent another £74 million.

Listen to yourself.

The only part I don't understand is why people saying this is Jose showing others down while saving his image.
IMO, it shows really badly on his image if he keeps on with his "We are inferior. So this is kind of expected" talk

I remember people, mostly top reds vehemently defending Moyes after he said we should aspire to be like City and that Fergie too would fail with the squad he left him with lots of explanations about how 'but he's telling the truth'

Fair enough. So new players needed.
Of course. When you sign disappointing players you need to sign more. Not to mention that a club always needs to sign new players. So yes, our new manager will have to sign new players.

Did anyone expect Spurs to top the group with RM and Dortmund last season? You have to give your team the belief and confidence you can go out there and compete with any team.
No manager has been criticizing his own team more than Pochettino this season. He even pretty much admitted today that Spurs aren't good enough to make it out of their group in the Champions League. So, you know, you might want to pick a better example.

Or maybe Ajax so far topping a group with Bayern Munich in it? Or Napoli topping the group with PSG and Liverpool? What have those clubs spent? Clubs like Roma and Monaco have reached the semi finals in recent seasons. They had lots of heritage didn't they?
I'm not buying that excuse sorry.

As long as we do not seem to be able to improve/develope the players we currently have at our club, the only way to improve is to buy new players... Wonder what they are doing at Carrington?

Really? I recall a pandemic of palms to face.

It never works though. You end up having to develop the players you buy as well. We will only make the big step up once we begin making the most out of what we have.

Surprised at people blaming the board here. Are they shite? Yes. Yes they are.

But I think it's easy to see why Mourinho doesn't get backed.
1. Lukaku is shite right now, looks absolutely awful up top
2. Lindelof is very very meh
3. Bailly is benched while players like Lukaku and Valencia play no matter how shite they are
4. Fred, who cost 50m, doesn't even play
5. Sanchez is absolutely awful

Can anyone see why maybe the board aren't going to bend over backwards to get the players he wants?

What are you talking about??

Board not backing Jose in transfer window happened in summer and not yesterday. Are you suggesting Ed could see the future quite clearly?

In reply to the post above...

Lukaku wasn't really that great last season. Good at times, but his barren spells go on too long.
Lindelof was meh last season, but holds out promise in 1-2 seasons.
Bailly, out injured for a long stretch last season, wasn't that great when he did play.
Fred...well, no one could have foreseen that we'd spend 50m on a player and then see him benched in perpetuity.
Sanchez was awful last season.

We really have done poorly with transfers since Fergie left. Most have had great moments, but who among have been consistently productive over a season? Not one that I can think of. Martial for a stretch, Bailly for a stretch, Herrera for a stretch, Shaw over the last two months, but none over an entire season.

should we get 3rd place and go in europa? for better chances at a trophy and re-qualify.
