Is Ole a good appointment?

I wish he'd been more assertive in that interview. Mentioning that it's 'six months' and that he's going to 'enjoy the ride' is only going to give the players an excuse for uncommited performances. Especially when they've been making excuses already this season.

He's obviously a friendly guy. Gabbiadini (former player who was managed by Ole) said that he wasn't convinced that Solksjaer has the personality to manage superstars. I hope he's wrong, and I hope that Ole knows how to lay down the law when necessary. The nice guy schtick will only take him so far. We don't want him to be the management equivalent of a substitute teacher who lets you go on your phone during lessons.
 
I do also have to wonder why they picked Ole and not any of the others for a short term role. Not that I wanted anyone else for it.

When you say "the others", who do you mean? Solksjaer makes the most sense out of the bunch he came from if that's what you mean

  • Keane - has a horrible record with man management. His tactics probably aren't bad, but he's not fit for modern management
  • Beckham - not a lot of managing experience
  • Cole/Yorke - no idea about either of them
  • Scholes - he's a fantastic pundit but he has no management experience.
  • Giggs - closest possibility to Solksjaer, but he's happy at Wales and doesn't have as wide experience.
  • Hughes - No thanks
  • Carrick - He's a good coach I'd say, but lacks the experience needed to make the jump up. Solksjaer is therefore a better fit
  • Who else could I be missing?
 
He is like a guy you want to succeed, but doesn't has the "boss" thing going on. For an interim manager, I think United should have picked a Hiddink type of manager with the experience and authority, return the motivation and fun, keep it simple, put the players on the right position, and hand it over to a younger gun for the longer term at the end of the season. Ranieri would have been perfect. Not someone where there's already some doubt if he is out of his depth.

Depends what you mean by 'any of the others'. Carrick and McKenna don't have the badges required and are inexperienced managerialwise, and many of the others who played under Fergie are either also inexperienced or experienced but their "philosophies" aren't great (Hughes/Bruce)

He doesn't have to be disciplinarian and rule with iron fist to be successful. Some players just need an arm round the shoulder and to be given a platform to express themselves. oli is already sending the right messages. For so long they've had to hear their manager keep telling the world how shite they are, this will undoubtedly give everyone a boost.

He's got managerial experience and has won trophies, albeit in a 'lesser' league but still with a team that wasn't favourites and were surpassing expectations. That's something most of the other ex United gang don't have.

Secondly, in contrast to Mou - he's about as positive a person as you can find anywhere and that's what we need right now. Our squad is full of potential but they need some life injected into them. If we smash Cardiff 3 or 4-0 which is very very doable given our squad, the uplift will be huge and I think we'll go on a run over the holidays give it's a nice run of games. If we draw or lose, it's just more of the same but at least without the manager constantly slagging off his players

Some players need discipline too, it's getting the balance thats key. I'd like to think Ole learnt that from Fergie though
 
Woodward obviously consulted Fergie months ago and the wheels were set in motion.
Ole and Phelan did not come here on a couple of days notice.

Think it was a wise choice.

If he ends up not just stabilizing the club, but get us winning matches playing the United Way...who knows

Trust me, Solskjær know how to balance friendly/serious and still have his respect. Every great leader knows this balance.

He seems like such a gentleman, a genuinely nice guy. I really hope he delivers, and he manages to get across to the players what it means to play for Manchester United. The players better not take the piss like they did under Jose, but maybe they won't under a more approachable, positive manager.
 
Doing it "like Ferguson", what does that mean anyway? Ferguson was not an ordinary manager, he was more of a meta manager who managed other coaches. Like Queiroz, when he tried to find the answer to winning the CL by playing only one striker as designed by Queiroz, as opposed to the gung-ho approach previously sported in the PL - which worked in the PL but not in Europe. Ferguson developed himself over the years, with the help of modern strategy & training coaches. Pining for the original gung-ho is the same mistake like Mourinho trying his original approach, they are both outdated. It doesn't mean anything to say "I'll do it like Ferguson", it's an empty statement and suggests a throw back unlike Ferguson who always kept developing.
 
Obviously, this appointment is mainly to uplift everyone around for now.

Shows how much toxic it was with Jose.

And, some of his fans thought that's the way for him to get the best out of his players.
 
What a good interview, it's refreshing to see a manager talking about the club without taking any cheap shots.

He was genuinely excited to be back and made all the right points. Hopefully he will be a huge success at ManUtd.

By bringing in Phelan he's done exactly that. From the wording on the website Phelan is the head coach I think it said, so I imagine he'll take most of the training perhaps along with McKenna.

A ball hasn't been kicked yet but he sounds more like a Manchester United manager than at least two of our last three permanent managers.

Genuinely chuffed for him. Hope he gets a good run out of his six months and at very least gets better options from it.

Ideally though? I hope he's a roaring success and he's one of the options for the permanent job.

Ole speaks fantastic. Says all the right things.

Let’s hope the players feed off that, where he becomes a motivator more than a tactically astute manager - as it’s a huge step up it’s hard to think he’d be of that level as yet.

  • GNev -- tried managing once we know what happened, used-to-give-good pundits.
  • PNev -- women's football coach/manager.
  • Stam -- small clubs manager.
  • Blanc -- not a bad manager record, managed PSG among other clubs.
  • VDS -- as chief officer of Ajax, not manager.
  • Steve Coppell -- not bad as small clubs manager but he's busy with his managerial role at India.
  • Bruce -- not really favorable tbh.
Rather have Solksjaer than these ex-players.

Anyone else we're missing?
 
That’s the best interview any Manchester United Manager has given since Fergie.
