Post-match discussion

We must not Forget it was Cardiff, but if we can play like this every game I'm happy. We do need a few players though.

I’ve seen our change in tactics yesterday described as “subtle” by a couple of media outlets, which is absurd considering the changes couldn’t have been more overt.

The only consistent elements were the line up and the formation, almost everything else was different and even a tactical novice like myself could see this.

Pressing, high full backs, forward passing, playing out from the back, movement off the ball. It was a revolution in terms of style.

I expect part of it is wanting to imply that Ole didn’t change much and it’s just the players giving a shit again which made the difference - Shearer’s nonsense spiel on MOTD yesterday seemed to confirm this.

Yes the players were sick of Mou but he clearly had them set up in a disgustingly negative way.

Also the reductive idea of players giving 100% every game no matter what the circumstances makes me laugh and needs challenging more - I’ve seen both Jose and the thicker pundits try and spin it this way the last few weeks.

At the very top level psychology is so so important in getting results - Jose should know this better than anyone, and it was snide of him to imply that the players were unprofessional if they couldn’t do this every game under any manager.

whilst it was brilliant - and those people who said its only Cardiff should understand that they have won their last 3 home games (albeit against Southampton, Wolves and Brighton) - I refuse to go overboard after just one game. The people have been acting like we are back will be going mental about Pogba, lingard being rubbish the next time we lose. Yes, it is uplifting and feels like the shackles have been removed, but lets not get carried away until we have had a good run of games. Im not being a gRinch just trying to be realistic

Though Alan Shearer was fecking dearer, please don't take my Solksjaer away.

I really liked this tweet from Luke Shaw, haven’t seen it posted on here.

Most of the players last night were players that were trying under Jose but his tactics weren't getting the best out of them. Many looked like their best yesterday.

Do players like Lukaku, Sanchez and Rojo deserve a start as soon as theyre ready to play or should they have to wait for one of the lads who played last night to have an off game first?

I believe they will get their chances, imo Sanchez especially could thrive in this setup.

Can't believe this is the first time we outrun the opposition this season. I knew that the workrate was constant problem during Jose time, but still that's shocking.

Even Ole looked surprised when he heard it.

A lot of it goes on high pressing game and our fullbacks camping on the opposition half.

Ole must be delighted, not many managers get to obliterate Cardiff twice this early in their managerial career.

I know its a honeymoon game and its still going to be a long slog through the rest of the season from here, but I'd rather we gave it a go and lost of a few games than play dour static Jose-ball.

Yeah, understand that and it was refreshing to see, but it still sounds pretty damning for Mourinho that we didn't manage to have a single game where we ran more than the opponent. I mean, we chased some games and there were also times when the opponent played more defensively at Old Trafford, but nope, we still somehow managed to ran less.

Although, tbf it did look like we were playing in slow motion most of the times.

Yes I thought the same but when you think about it we bought certain players in because of their attacking abilities, we bring through academy player for the same reason, I guess it's the players playing their natural game. We now look like a team on the pitch, we have a manager with the philosophy that fits the players we have. Ecstatic
totally agree with you.

It's straight-up mind-boggling tbh, it was always evident that we have a very capable squad but still many people defended Mourinho with their attempts to underrate our players. Ik it's only Cardiff but there was so many different, positive things we did yesterday in that single game even when compared to the best of games we had under Mourinho.

I liked the post match interview where Ole immediately praised the players when asked what the reasons were for the improved performance - “they good players...very talented players”. Nothing about him - everything was about the players - oh and Mick Phelan.

How I want him to succeed - if only to put one over Jose who continuously went on about how bad our squad and players are...and last years second was HIS best achievement....

I don't ever remember seeing the average rating for the team be green. Is green 7.5+?

For the first time in a long, long time I watched with a smile on my face. I'm actually looking forward to the next game too!

Ouch, hiss. Sarky. :nervous:

The number of passes is especially significant. That fact that we have created more chances then you would surmise more of them are forward passes.

What stuns me is how pundits can’t see why we played better, and they didn’t even get what ole said, play the ball forward, press the ball and one thing ole said we will not forget ( no team Should ever outwork a Man Utd team) that mentality is what sets the Ton for his time here. Shearer actually thought the players stopped running for him, no Jose didn’t want his sides pressing and he played two DM’s who do anything but press and create for the front man, with a number 9 in lukaku who can’t hold the ball, and does not press the defenders

The teams jobs

DDG plays to the defenders, not in the air

Jones and lindelof split playing the ball on the deck to the DM

Matic anchering the midfield, no fellaini next to him, making his job easy. Like they say, who would have two guys driving one bus? That is what fellaini and matic problem were, meaning nothing supporting the attack

You have young and Shaw playing has attaching wingbacks, making it a front 7

Pogba and Herrera pressing and playing closer to the front three, and they built for this, meaning they creating with pogba the heart of 95% of the goals

Lingard Rashford and martial not only pressing the ball, they interchanging with each other, and they do what lukaku can’t do run the channels with speed, and of course they have a great first touch which lukaku’s are of a brick wall.

Jose’s sides were bottom of the league for distanced covered, wonder why? Fullbacks playing deep, two DMs who were pretty slow that stay deep, and a front man who’s not very mobile and needs the ball fed to him not getting involved in the plan which rashford, martial and lingard offer

Everyone played well but that was always going to happen, the players looked free and happy, had a little luck with the deflections on the opening goals, makes our goal difference look a tad better, I look forward to the next one,

A performance that was full of running, quick passing, flair, and intent, and it all looks so different. Every player in the team just looked better and more confident. I know it was only Cardiff, but winning 5-1 away is excellent irrespective of the opposition.

I'm under no illusions about how much work has still to be done to turn the team into genuine contenders for the big prizes, and I'm sure there will be some disappointments ahead, but I'll be happy if Ole and Mike can just maintain the team's levels of enthusiasm and effort through to the end of the season.

I'm enjoying the prospect of a United team that is fun to watch again.

I have to say that performance did put a smile on my face. It is like we where watching a different team as it was pleasing to watch. I tell you for the first time in ages I watch MotD and did not delete it.

That yesterday's performance was so good and such a welcomed ray I feel the need to fly over to Manchester, find where Ole's staying at and just straight-up serenade him for days.

Oh god I just remembered mata exists

I love Mata, but there is a problem with way he has been playing. He is leaving right side all the time, drifting in to the center, leaving Young/Valencia/Dalot alone. This may not be a big problem with Ole's style of playing, but our right side has been a bit weak compared with the left side with Shaw and Martial.

Pure joy.

Under Jose, we’d have fallen back at 2-0 and packed the box, Cardiff would have scored off a deflected shot and we’d have a nail-biting final minutes. And I would’ve come out of the match feeling unhappy knowing that the rot was still there.

Fullbacks pushed up high. CBs challenged high up the pitch. Forwards and midfielders pressed without fear of being caught out.

Reminded me of the SAF mentality: we are here to score goals. You may get one off of us, but we are going to get 4. And we won’t stop attacking.

Lingard did that against Cardiff. The difference was we moved so fast up the pitch we didn’t lose it and get caught out.

Was thinking if Jose was still in charge with the threat of those long throws we probably would have had Fellaini, Smalling (even if injured) and Lukaku back in the squad to try and nullify that.

When players are enjoying their game , it's infectious and spreads to the whole team. So running the whole match doesn't seem like a chore but a fun way to see who gets on the scoresheet most. That directly contributes to the increased distance run by the players.

Rewatched MOTD again this morning and had to chuckle at how painful Alan Shearer and Ian Wright found speaking after a great United performance.

Shearer managing to completely contradict himself in one sentence by saying the players had “stopped running” for Mourinho but also had not once outrun their opponent all season...

They also seemed to love implying that these fixtures now are all easy eg. we deserve no credit no matter how well we play.

Shame they didn’t show Lindelof’s bursting run and pass to Rashford I was looking forward to seeing that again!
