Harry Maguire

Maybe English people are not accustomed to defenders who use the ball well, but not every defender who has a decent passing skills is good for a big club . This guy isn't good enough for us and would be another case of paying insane money for an average player; watch La Liga mid table teams and you'll see plenty of defenders with Maguire qualities. I'd take Toby 100 times over this man.

I guess you arent used to CBs who can head the ball. We have 2 of the CBs with the least attempted headers this season in Bailly and Lindelof, Toby is another.

Maguire is strong in the air.

Still think he's a very good player - assuming a lot of the negative comments on here today are as a result of his miss and not his actual defensive performance.

you could have done worse than to re-sign Evans, we got him for £3m and he is still quality

A handy enough player for sure, we have many in that category though. We need better.

So being strong in the air is enough quality for United to pay 70M for an average overrated English player? Don't you people think we already have enough of those overrated English players in this team? Smalling is miles better than this man, we wasted too much money on mediocre players the last 6 years (even during SAF last season), let's now have a proper transfer strategy if we want to be back where we deserve to be; no more buying frauds please.

This. Maguire would suit us a lot better than Toby given the qualities we have/dont have.

City play with a high line, but Laporte is rarerly exposed. We need to have a good partner that compliments him well. Smalling should suit him well. I would also guess that he would work well with Lindelof (he is deceptively quick).

Maguires' vocal qualities? What does that even mean, what good is someone being loud, a "vocal leader" if there is little evidence of him ever making a team better defensively?

You dont understand the term? If you dont, I do not think I can help you. Probably just my english. You will have to excuse me. :)

If he does not make a team better defensively it is obviously irrelevant.

No thanks. Leicester is about his level. He's a £30 million defender, tops. Paying any more would be stupid. People overrate him because he can get his head to a ball and he's English.

With Mourinho gone, I think we can happily rule this one out for the foreseeable future.

VVD wasn't man of the match in every Southampton game he played.

I don't understand this comment. VVD was good at Southampton, I am saying Maguire from what I have seen has been a bit shite from a defensive point of view.

I understand the term, but I think in some cases it almost becomes like a buzz word without any real meaning. We lack leadership at the back, but being loud doesn't necessarily make someone a leader.

No hes definitely not a £70 million player. Glad we didnt pay that if its true thats what they wanted. He's more around £40-45 million

If the idea is to replace Jones (which most people seem to think) then we need to replace the good things he brings to the squad. Only Smalling and Jones win headers. So we need someone who wins headers to replace Jones.

If you get rid of Lindelof or Bailly then thats where Toby comes in. But the last thing we need is 3 CBs who dont win any headers and relying on 1 CB to stay fit every week to make sure we arent punished for it all the time.

He was quite clearly individually special though. Maguire is good at heading and can dribble with the ball forward well but honestly isn’t that brilliant elsewhere.

Lukaku, fellaini, Lingard,

If we want to replace Jones then look for a quality defender and not bring in someone who'd not improve us. We already have too many average players stinking at this team and we want to bring in another one? 45M is still a lot of money for this guy, the English media and fans hyped him too much that his price went up for no apparent reason, so no need to go after him. I'm pretty sure our army of 60 scouts can find someone better than him at cheap. I'd prefer us to wait till summer to get a defender if the only option now is Maguire; leave him at Leicester or let him move at a club like Everton, it's his true level, mid table at best.

People on here underestimate how having a defender who is awesome in the air is vital for a rock solid defence.
It breeds confidence throughout the team in both boxes. Everytime a ball is played in our box we look like conceding a goal.
Let's walk before we can run. Maguire will improve his game with better players and having better players around him will help him and the whole team.
I do agree 75m is too much. But around 50m, it's a steal.

I don't think so. I just think you need a defender that is good in the air, but is also generally a good defender.

What I really like about him is that he would complement both Smalling and Lindelof well. Smallings pace would be great to have next to Maguire and Maguires use of the ball would be needed if we play Smalling.

Well, being a leader is what I ment by that. I have no clue how much decibels his voice can give. :)

His «win rate» is 75 % in the PL. This is actually better than both Smalling (66%) and van Dijk (73 %). Both Smalling and van Dijk enter more duels though at 6,4 and 5,6 per 90 min versus Maguires 5,2.

That being said, he is less agile than both of them. If he is an option one should consider if he could be the vocal leader we sorely miss and if his (lack of) agility would be a big issue for us.
Is it me or does he get on the end of attacking headers too on set pieces etc?

He has tried 8 shots from headers this season. Thats joint 12th from CBs.

Thats actually further down than you'd expect after his exploits with England at the world cup but its only 2 behind VVD and Tomkins who are 5th and 6th so hes not far off.

Interestingly its Michael Keane with 22 headed attempts that leads the way, then Sean Morrison with 17. Then Balbuena 13 and Rudiger 11

Not enough recovery pace and not very agile. Would be a poor signing especially for a high line defence. Our standards should be higher. He is good in the air and on the ball but he isn't worth what Leicester demand and he isn't even great defensively. Koulibaly should be the main target. Koulibaly, Alderweireld and Skriniar are all better than him.

Maguire has won 60 headers this season losing out only 18 times.

Smalling has won 54 and lost 28

VVD has won 81 and lost 28

Duffy 76 and 20

Michael Keane 105 to 57

Sean Morrison 129 to 69

Having a look through but it seems like Maguire might have the 3rd best ratio in the league for a CB

That’s because we (Leicester) are crap at corners, our idiot Keepers coach runs our set pieces for some reason

I don't think he is anything special defensively, but he is more than decent in the air, english and decent going forward. He also plays on the left, no?
Highly unlikely but If we could somehow convince Leicester to do a swap deal where they would get both Jones and Rojo + 10m for him then that would be great. We would have another solid option there instead of having those guys on the pay-roll doing nothing. Then we can take our time in the transfer market and go looking for a world class CB to replace him in the summer.

If we are signing him as some sort of hyped up big magical CB saving the day for big money, i'll eat my hat.

We’ve got too many cbs already thanks, including a gem currently on loan at Celtic
