To be honest I think that while O'Brien might be bright, sharp and quick witted I do think he simply lacks class. From the very beginning he lets out sighs of exasperation, he frequently cuts off JRM mid sentence and with his arrogant tone treats a major politican like some random drooling moron he can just bully around. Even as someone who stands on his side of the argument he was fairly infuriating.
It's not how you have a meaningful dialogue, it's not how you convince anyone who isn't already on your side. How likely is it for a pro Brexit person to entertain his arguments (let alone agree with them) when he's trying so hard to talk down to his counterpart who in a way speaks for them? If you antagonize your audience it's hard for them to keep an open mind towards your arguments. JRM in comparison seems very unimpressed and patient with O'Brien's antics, so from that perspective I can understand why some people think he had the upper hand.
What was needed here was not badgering, but finesse.
It's all about preaching to the choir these days. It serves to fuel the divisive nature of the political landscape in this country.
