CL L Champions League Round of 16 1st Leg

We were beaten by a better team, there's no shame in that. PSG are a few years ahead of us in team building, experience and game Management. Ollie will know that we have 2 fullbacks that can't cross the ball . Young is not able to defend. They can regroup and win on Monday and push on against liverpool.

I thought we had some decent crosses today but nobody was in the correct spots to get on the end of them. Granted our crossing after they went 2-0 was poor.

I'm not sure there was confusion on the pitch (just tv/commentary), Young was just there as captain. I don't like the way that it seemed as though the referee was influenced in some way to send him off.

To be honest I was watching without sound and it looked like Young was the one sent off all the way up to Pogba walking off.

I think therefore there was something strange about the situation.

Can't believe how short sighted people are. A good run in the league doesn't magically erase the obvious weaknesses in the team. Didn't expect anything from it before the game and to be honest would much prefer we concentrate on top 4 this season.

It's in games like these that you find the measure of your experienced players and Mata, Sanchez and Matic were awful.

Thought Bailly and Lindelof really got found out..again. I can't shake the feeling our 4 main CB's wouldn't even be backups at other top clubs.

Kimpembe has to go off. Such cowardly reffereeing.

If anyone was still questioning it, I think that game showed how clearly Sanchez is finished at this level.

Lukaku's effort levels as bad as ever.

All in all I think the refereeing/injuries killed any hope we had. Even with Kimpembe staying on, if Martial and Lingard hadn't have pulled up I think we were looking at a scrappy draw here.

Squad depth needs to be addressed this summer, with Lukaku & Sanchez moved on and Greenwood / Chong / a RW signing brought in to refresh the squad.

Also - personally I don't see how anybody can blame Ole when you look at the options he had on the bench,. I think a diamond with Fred / Lukaku replacing our wingers would have been the only other option there & that doesn't look pretty to me either. Lose lose at that point really.

Gutted but hey ho! It's not over yet and with a bit of luck we'll be looking good for top4 by the end of the month.

Heads up!

P.s: Praying for Angels arm, poor dab had a nasty bump.

FFS we didnt get "schooled" at all. It was probably heading for a nil nil. We had terrible luck with 2 key injuries and an awful referee who allowed their eventual goalscorer to stay on the pitch after 2 stonewall second bookings.

give your heads a wobble.
Ole got a footballing lesson and anyone denying it is just deceiving himself/herself.

Even before the injuries, PSG had full control of the game. Particularly with PSG playing 3-4-3 with 2 of the attacking trio (Di Maria and Draxler) being well capable of dropping into midfield, we needed to switch to a 4 or 5 man midfield.

Ole got the subs wrong again I think. Tactically I think there's questions to be asked about him.
What do you mean? Sánchez is or was a a wide player who we pay all the money in the world. The other one a former top class.. Who else should he have put on? Lukaku isnt bothered at all and the others are defenders. Loosing both Martial and Lingard was really tough for any manager.

The general reaction really does my head in. One defeat against a team that is better than us and now we are crap again apparently.

‘A reality check’, really? Surely you all knew we weren’t good enough to win the Champions League this season?

‘Ole was naive’, his tactics were thrown out the window by Martial and Lingard going off injured. We couldn’t maintain the high press anymore and exposed our defence for what it was under Mourinho. It’s not Ole’s fault the only attacking options on the bench are two wingers that have no pace and a striker so out of form he can’t control a football anymore.

Talking some sense here. As unpopular opinion as it is, our first XI with a few additions could do very well but we lack depth, most of our bench is levels above the players they come in. We lost two starters after 45 mins, huge blow that. It wasn't Jose's delusions when he hinted tht we're lacking quality. Not many managers would have done better tonight in this situation. Some of you expected us to smash PSG after Cavani and Neymar got injured but expect our own two starters getting injures to not affect us?

Its hard to draw criticism against either when Matic and Young are both at fault for losing their men. Otherwise I thought they were both fine. Lindleoff will be a beast.

I’m with you. Had some bad crosses but you always get a mixed bag; that’s the nature of crosses.

It was the lack of movement to get onto the end of them. I can remember one, either Young or Rashford (think Young) played a beautiful ball across goal and there were 4 players in the box, and all of them were walking.

Ole got outclassed I think. Marquinhos man marking Pogba and United had zero ideas, because they had 3 defenders vs two attackers and had pace to match. And then they had Alves, Draxler and Verratti vs Matic (too slow) and Lingard on his own and we were left chasing the ball because they just had too much quality. The defenders couldnt close the gap because Mbappe was stretching them.

Apart from his mistake for the goal I actually thought Matic had a good game.

Disagree. It was even enough, although they were controlling the ball better. We had two counters in the first half that came to nothing.

On another night we score from a corner and then defend the lead and hit them on the counter.

I don't think bringing on Lukaku instead of Mata would have made a difference . Lukaku just would have lost control of the ball and offered very little with his running game .

Disappointed by the result, but this game shows a number of issues in the squad that need addressing . Sanchez shouldn't be used if he continues playing like this especially with Chong needing some game time.

Good interview from Ole!

I thought the same. I liked when he said we aren’t use to a game of that degree in Europe. You can see the naivety in our defending. Whether we like it or not we can’t defend like it’s the Premier League, that’s why we always give away cheap fouls in Europe.

I rather have Mourinho defense, at least in the CL Europe wise. At least it be 0-0 draw with Mourinho defense. Than lost 2 like this.
Jose was right, we REALLY need to work on our defense.

Without De Gea, we be like at least 4 goals down today instead of 2.

Not sure that’s Ole being outclassed. It’s more incumbent to the fact that when Pogba is taken away, we do not have a plan B. Nor the quality of players to have a plan B. Lingard and Martial injuries really didn’t help though, obviously. Martial is the only other player we have who can create out of nothing.

Honestly felt Man Utd would have gotten something out of this game considering Neymar and Cavani was out...result is kind of shocking tbh.

That was bad. PSG were missing 2 of their star forwards, they had a 35 year old (?) Dani Alves at RB and played Marquinhos in midfield.

Absolutely no excuse for not even troubling Buffon properly. Sanchez should be shipped off to China right away.

Just got in. Dissapointed tonight in the crowd as much as the result. Nobody seemed up for it. If we had cranked up the volume anything was possible. Crowd seemed nervous and this got to the players.

Herrera was very good today, again. Won the ball time and time again. Take a deep breath.

No he wasn't.

To say he was very good is a ridiculous comment imho. He's a Utd favourite but when compared to the best midfielders he's not even close!

Would love to see this team for the return leg:

Sanchez - Lukaku

Mata - Fred - Pereira - Valencia

Rojo - Jones - Smalling - Darmian

Romero

Pull off a central midfielder or a left back when we’re struggling to even get possession against a far superior side, Christ I’m glad you’re not our manager

Did you not watch us ping in ball after ball with nobody attacking it in the middle? We could have fired crosses in all day and not won a header. It was Mourinho management which I thought everyone was sick of.

I'd have brought Lukaku on and put Rashford out wide. Sanchez hasn't shown he's even worth bringing in off the bench at this point, he's useless.

Yep. Sanchez and Mata killed any pace we had. And would have been the case if Sanchez wasn’t past it either.

Lingard shouldn't be on that list given how poor we became after him and Martial went off. And given Martial did feck all...
You can't have it both ways. How can he have done feck all, yet at the same time losing him made us poor?

Lingard offered pace and energy. Add Lindelof to that list instead. Will never hold at the absolute top. Showed it today.

Is that enough? Apparently not.

I won't deny we missed him when he went off, but we didn't create anything when he was on either. We were just an even darker shade of shit.

Don't agree, ole has only been here for two months and is dealing with a weaker squad then psg . What we had on the bench didn't help especially when you lose your key elements to your game plan which is pace and it ain't Ole's fault matic fell asleep on corner duty .

All i hear is if martial/lingard hadnt gone off. If the ref had sent kimbembe off etc etc.
Reality is utd were completely outclassed by a good side who were missing two of their 4 best players and one of their best full backs. Young also could easily have gone. They also lost their best midfielder during the game.
If veratti misses second leg then you still have a chance even without pogba as psg have shown they can collapse in certain situations. Saying that 10-15 % chance only. PSG were sizing you up in first half and keeping it tight but would always have gone on front foot in second irrespective of who played for UTD.
Had Cavani, Neymar, Muniene and a fully fit Verratti played then ?
Playing open attacking football isnt as easy as go out and play lads. Its all about transition when the ball is lost and pressing high carries high risk and can only be done with hyper fit players in a system worked on for years.Against poorer teams who cant play around the press or who dont have a plan for dealing with it you can get good results.

Despite trying to "rebuild" since 2013, we still have some players in our squad who should be nowhere near it. The saddest part is that some of them are ones we have signed in the last 24 months for crazy money and/or wages.

I'm not gonna dwell on this too much - all I'd ask for at the moment is a win in the second leg. If we don't go through, we don't go through. Just want to see us fight a little more.

Please, at some point this season, start promoting Greenwood or any other lad from the academy who looks like he has a bright future, because some of the players we had playing out there tonight I can't stomach to watch much longer, you all know who I'm talking about.

Honestly PSG where nothing special. They barely created anything in the first half and in the second half we lost two thirds of our attacking force. Losing all that pace upfront hurt us. Apart from that the biggest difference tonight was our team just looked so nervous. Players who have been on fire for us recently tonight looked scared and made too many mistakes. Confidence makes a massive difference in a game and we just looked like we had none, especially the attacking players.

Match was over once the injuries occurred. To be fair we were seriously playing within ourselces even before then, a real cagey performance.

It's pretty much over now so let's hope the injuries aren't too bad, because the replacements can't play the same style of football that has made Ole successful up to now.

"Outclassed"... Part of this forum is just a joke. Honestly.

They should outclass us considering the oil-team they have, but they didn't outclass anything at all.
It was a bit embarrassing towards the end. How many passes did they string together while their fans cheered?

I don't agree with that at all, both teams were fluffing their attacks on the final ball and we were forced into subbing on 2 players whom psg could easily keep quiet, giving them the advantage in attack.

End of the day goals change games and while we never know what the final score would have been had kimbempe been rightfully sent off, he woudnt have been the one to score their first.

No, it's not. His job is to cover territory and win the ball back in positions where we can potentially attack. He did his job, but things weren't clicking for our attacking players or Pogba. That's not on him.

"He isn't a bestest midfielders!" Great argument.
