Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says Man Utd must not end up like Liverpool
Solskjaer jokes: "I have Liverpool fans in Norway and every year is going to be their year. It has got to October and it's: 'OK, next year.'"
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has warned Manchester United they must not go years without winning the Premier League title like Liverpool.
United have not won the league since Sir Alex Ferguson left the club in 2013, coming closest under Jose Mourinho last season as they finished a distant second behind Manchester City.
Liverpool, meanwhile, have not lifted the league title since 1990 and, with 12 games to go, are level on points with leaders City, plus they have a game in hand.
United host Liverpool on Sunday, live on Sky Sports Premier League with kick-off at 2.05pm, and Solskjaer anticipates the 29-year wait for the title will be weighing heavy on their minds.
United caretaker boss Solskjaer said: "Of course they do feel that pressure. I think all the supporters do and players probably do as well.
"But then we have not won it for a few years and so we want to get back to that. We have to make sure that we don't end up being happy being among the top four.
"If you aim too low and reach your target, then that's more dangerous than aiming too high and missing them.
"It is difficult to win the league here. It is probably the toughest league to win and when you look at it, there are only five or six teams that have won the Premier League. Leicester did it - which was a miracle - before that Blackburn did it, but then there was a few big clubs that have won it."
Solskjaer said it was too early for mind games with Liverpool counterpart Jurgen Klopp on Friday, but could not resist taking a cheeky dig at Sunday's opponents.
He said: "I have loads of Liverpool fans back home and every year is going to be their year. It has got to October and it's: 'OK, next year.'
"Now they are in the race so for them, it is going to be an exciting finish to the league. That is none of our concern. We just have to concentrate on ourselves."

Best part is - he has heaped pressure on them and yet he says that he doesn't believe in mind games. In the same bloody interview.![]()
I feel like this is glossed over too much. It seems like in most of these debates Poch gets the benefit of starting off as some sort of 10/10 top manager which he hasn’t really earned and Ole somehow needs to prove perfection in every aspect of management to reach his level. Ole has shown what a United under him looks like and it’s most fans dream scenario. It would be a way bigger risk at this point to see what United under Poch would look like because we don’t know and there’s any number of reasons it could be worse. At this point it would almost certainly be since United under Ole has been near perfect.I agree that we should wait till the end of the season.
We should stop using 13 matches as a sample size for Ole at United and many years for Poch at Spurs.
Ole's sample size at United is 13 matches ,while Poch's sample size at United is zero, no two scenarios are the same, LVG and Mourinho were successful elsewhere but failed at United. It's wishful thinking that since Poch. is succeeding at Spurs he will succeed at United.
At least we have seen what Ole's United is/will look like(and most of us like it), we don't know what Poch's United will look like.
How on earth did we let Moyes get rid of him?
Why wasn't Sanchez dubbed on before jese?
Can't emphasise the stupidity in bringing Lingard on after 15 minutes knowing full well we've rushed him from injury. I know Sanchez is shite but ffs at least he's generally fit.
You do realise the manager is the one who picks the team. You do realise that it’s fitness staff at the club who assess player fitness. It’s also down to the player to be honest about their fitness.
Anyone criticising Solskjaer is a prize plum.
Exactly. This place is like a cult at the moment. You do realise the manager is the one who picks the team.
Didn’t ole say before the game that Lingard couldn’t do 90 min? Hindsight is always 20/20 but I think he was naive in that selectionYou do realise that it’s fitness staff at the club who assess player fitness. It’s also down to the player to be honest about their fitness.

You do realize manager picks the team based on info gain from fitness staff and the player himself?

That’s fine, but if he wasn’t fit to start, he almost certainly wasn’t fit to play 70 minutes. Him being on the bench for 20 minutes at the end if the situation warrants the risk is completely different to him being asked to play the majority of a match. You do realize manager picks the team based on info gain from fitness staff and the player himself?
You can dress it however you fecking want, mate. Ole chooses the team. He's not blameless at all like you're trying to make out.He isn’t the person responsible for declaring players fit to play. You must realise that blindingly obvious aspect of club football?
Playing Herrera and Matic in every game for 90 minutes and then subbing on Lingard. Of course Ole shares a big part of the blame.
Lingard never looked right coming onto the pitch. Not sure why he didn’t see that in training. Lingard was just casually walking as soon as he came on.
Nah, Solskjaer came into this game knowing Lingard was only able for limited minutes and said as much beforehand. That didn't suddenly change just because Mata and Herrera were injured too, unless you think the medical staff had a sudden and miraculous change of opinion.
Bringing on someone you've already deemed capable of limited minutes so early in a game where you had already used up substitutions was a clear risk and it backfired.
