PL D FA Premier League

Manchester United 0:0 Liverpool

Post-match discussion

Sun, 24 February 2019

Liverpool were bad, because Manchester United made them bad. You can't ignore the effort by the players, and then accuse the opposition of simply being bad. Liverpool are the league leaders, and should be treated as such until they are no longer.

Today is the first time in the Premier League this season that Liverpool has not scored a goal away. Very first time.

We lost the game against PSG beacuse we lost 2 crucial players in Lindgard and Martial during the 1st half. Our only loss under Ole. Until that time the game was very much anyones guess.

Today, Liverpool were held to nothing. They created nothing, and Shaw literally made Klopp take Salah off the pitch, he couldnt get anything done because Shaw was stepping up like a goddamn titan to remove him from the game.

In 2019 we have played 11 games. We have won 8, played 2 draws, and lost 1 game.

In that same time we have 7(!!) clean sheets in the last 11 games played. We have conceded 6 goals only, and only left the pitch scoreless twice against PSG and Liverpool.

We created the biggest chances and were only Allisons fingertips away from going up 1-0 with Lindgard. Liverpool had the ball but could get nothing going because the team was so composed and let nothing stop them from getting the job done.

After losing 3 key players before half time, I was sure that this was going to be a loss. I never dreamed that they would actually pull this through, and then some.

Today is a fkn delight to be a Manchester United fan. This team is brilliant, we need upgrades, but man there is fight in this squad.

I’m still really irritated at how bad we were. Certainly didn’t look like a side capable of winning a title.
I would be too if I were you. No joke, but you looked toothless. I was shocked as you had such an advantage over us once we got those freak injuries. You never really seemed to pressure us. Really surprising. Thought you would have smelt blood and gone for it to be honest.

A bit of disruption vs PSG and we fell apart a bit. We kept things together far better today, quality of the opposition notwithstanding. Very solid defensive unit we're developing. Ashley up and down but that's as good as Shaw's been for us defensively and the 2 boys in the middle were majestic for the most part.

Was disappointed with the matic absence and I knew we were fecked. Almost cried when I saw herrera leaving because he has literally become our backbone.

But my word did the boys turn up. So proud of them. We were down but not out. One of the draws that I haven't felt too bad about. Hopefully the injuries aren't too bad because crystal palace away is no cake walk.

Ole took a chance with Lingard and it didn't work this time. But I like his attitude, he wanted all three points and I don't judge him for that.

Under the bizarre circumstances, one cannot be anything but proud of the effort. Hope that Ole and the players are also proud, even the substitutes who came in and really did everything they could. Liverpool was really lucky to get a point today.

Given the injuries and not starting with our first XI, I thought the best we could hope for would be a draw.

Feeling even more optimistic about the future despite the injuries in that we were unlucky not to win - we had the better chances. I thought McTominay did ok, didn’t see an awful lot from Pereira to convince me he needs more games, perhaps it’s due to lack of match fitness.

Shaw and Lindelof were quality in defence.

Plenty of scousers claiming we parked the bus and should be ashamed or something.

After losing three players before half time and having a fourth hobbling we still had more and better chances than the toothless vermin side. All their teeth are tied up in Klopp and Firmino's mouths I think.

Complete contrast to Mourinho's last match at Anfield in December, when he had more fit players to choose from and we got battered.

I picked Rashford as my MOM because he put his body on the line and never stopped right to the end even though it was clear he was injured - a true warrior. Lots of effort from everyone but still some simple pass options not executed which could have caused them more problems. Ordinarily, after the poor start to the season, I'd have been happy with a point against the league leaders but I'm kind of disappointed we didn't get all three. On that showing they have no chance of being champions. We were there for the taking - no Matic, Martial, Lingard, losing Mata and Herera so early and Rashford playing injured too - and they couldn't do it. GGMU!

Agree with every word of that Tom. Brilliant post.

Post match Mourinho was in awe of Liverpool's intensity and made it seem to the gullible we were a million miles off them.

Luke Shaw has shown some eureka moments in defence in the past 5-7 games. He just gets it now. He’s no longer making schoolboy mistakes. Brilliant to see.

Absolute crap game, dominated possession but created naff all. Whatsoever.

Lucky to get a point tbh, beckers save was top drawer as I thought it was 1 nil nailed on.

Overall a point is fair and I don't think either sets of fans can complain.

Interesting game in so many ways. The fans were outstanding, they refused to let the boys give up and kept them going. If our players had been prepared in pre-season the problems might have been less but we’ve had phases of the same kinds of injuries under Fergie. The two young lads stood tall and after all the criticism I thought McT deserved man of the match for his courage coming into that kind of game and playing so well. Andreas also came out playing strong with shades of his potential are still apparent. The third sub is no longer the footballer he once was and he made little contribution. Our defence partnership was superb of Iceman and ‘Dave’. Lukaku made three great passes but his general play and attitude is so poor. I still think we need five good players to fit Ole’s style of play. Ole made a mistake with Jesse but I have to blame Jesse for saying he was OK. However, the greatest mystery from this game has to be Fred.

I said I'd take a draw before kick off and after 25 minutes I was praying for a draw but to be fair we could have nicked it but all credit has to go to our defence who took control of them. Mo who?

I thought we did really well all considered. The injuries were hilarious, bad luck I guess.. Worked super hard, McTominay and Shaw were total class.

Liverpool were largely poor - think they came for a draw and weren't very proactive about things when half our team got injured. They'll be happy with a point I'm sure.

Shame injuries conspired to give us a pretty forgettable game though.

Proud of the lads. Liverpool created nothing of note all game.

We would have beaten them had we not been missing half of our first XI.
Agreed. Something's not quite right with Liverpool- for a team chasing honours they really have one of the poorest midfields I can ever recall. I think City will beat them to the title, Bayern will knock them out of the Champions League and they will start thinking about their manager again. Saying that Ole has proved more than enough he's United through and through and I feel it will be a massive mistake to appoint anyone else above him

Great point considering the circumstances.

Wasn't the best game again, you can say that about most of our Liverpool games over the last few years but we did bloody well to keep at it after being forced to use all three subs in the first half and down to the bare bones in midfield and up front. They didn't create anything of note with the possession they had and we had the best two chances of the game.

Thought Shaw had Salah in his pocket all game, Smalling was also towering and McTominay stepped in admirably for Matic. He needed that after his last couple of games.

This all had to have been helped by the cracking atmosphere too. Made a pretty poor game seem about 10 times better than it was.

we really should be title contenders. what a mismanagement of the squad.

Such a shame that the injuries in the first half killed our game plan and thus the game.

Weird game, Liverpool dominated possession but we had the best chances. Draw was possibly a fair result considering the circumstances. We basically missed huge players, then it was disaster after disaster. We were there for the taking, regardless of what you'll hear. I would of took a point when I seen the lineup, I would have snatched it off you at half time. If Liverpool are going to win this league they need a ruthless cutting edge. We have issues going forward injury wise, that was the wring lineup in my opinion. Fred must be awful if he can't get a game under these circumstances.

Ole is even better at parking the bus than Mourinho now! Great effort from the team considering the circumstances! A draw was probably fair and all but how sweet would it have been if Smalling got a knee or a toe on that late cross from Lukaku!

Such a shame that the injuries in the first half killed our game plan and thus the game.

It hurt Liverpool more, they lost their rhythm totally... What a move from OGS, no other manager would dare to pull off such a thing!

probably mentioned before, but Liverpool showing their lack of class once again. Singing during a minutes applause...

Been thinking about this now - and I can't see any better option than going 3-5-2 against Palace if Martial isn't fit to play.

DDG - Bailly, Lindelöf and Smalling at the back - Shaw and Young as wingbacks - McTominay, Perreira and Pogba in central midfield and Lukaku and Sanchez up front.

But the subs should be intriguing : Romero, Dalot, Darmian, Fred..Chong, Gomes and Greenwood ?

fecking nightmare working all day but managed to see most of it. Incredible circumstances with a player going down every 6 seconds, dont think we'll ever see something like that again. Defended brilliantly and Dave had nothing to do. Understandably disrupted going forward but we still had a few bits and that save from Alisson was brilliant to be fair. Thought we'd stole it at the end too, arghhh. Still, a good point I think. Wouldn't normally say that about a home draw but the circumstances were extreme.

Have barely had a chance to even look up post match interviews but hope the injury news is somehow ok, really not ideal for the coming games.

That was an excellent performance, all things considered. We had four injuries in the first half, yet we kept Liverpool to one shot on target all game. Defensively we were superb; McTominay and Pereira stepped and did exactly what was asked of them in midfield. We were effectively playing with ten men for most of the game, due to Rashford's injury, but we improved as the game went on, being the better team second half.

The crowd was superb today and really lifted the side when they needed it. The injuries are a worry, when the schedule is so busy, but that's just the way it goes sometimes.

Can't fault the team and the management for battling on, despite the injury setbacks. We adapted our game-plan and worked throughout. I'm proud of that performance; it's one of those games where a draw feels like a moral victory. The morale is superb once again.

Interim boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford is a doubt for their next match after playing injured in the 0-0 draw with Liverpool.

Rashford was forced to stay on for 90 minutes as United used up all their substitutions in the first half.

Ander Herrera, Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard all went off injured.

"If he plays, I will be surprised," said Solskjaer ahead of the league game against Crystal Palace on Wednesday.

"I have never seen the likes of this before," he added. "Three hamstrings in the first half?"

Solskjaer suggested Rashford's injury was the result of being "kicked" by Liverpool's players after the winger appeared to be hurt following an early challenge from Jordan Henderson.

Liverpool substitute Xherdan Shaqiri was booked late in the game for a poor tackle, while free-kicks were awarded to Rashford following fouls by defenders Andy Robertson and Joel Matip.

"Rashford was kicked. He did his ankle straight away," said Solskjaer. "We should have taken Rashford off as well but we couldn't."

"He was... you can't say targeted but you can say there were quite a few fouls on him, definitely. Normally you would take him off after five minutes. When he went straight through his ankle blew up.

"He wanted to run it off, then Juan [Mata] and Ander [Herrera] came off so we couldn't take the risk taking him off. Hopefully he has not damaged himself too much.

"We played with 10 and a half men," he added. "The fans made up for it and Rashford's attitude made up for it also."

Yes mate! GGMU!

Good result from our perspective but a worrying performance.
Our play in and around the box was sloppy and incoherent which led to no chances created. Good that we kept another clean sheet, we would have lost that without Van Dijk and Alisson but we need to improve and fast.
You lot played well and could have won it but for the aforementioned players.
A draw at OT is never a bad result considering our record there. Hoping our performances pick up soon though otherwise City will move above us quite soon

3 subs in the 1st half , lets be honest we would have taken a point once that happened

lingaard sub just silly ....was never fit and should not hve been thrown on ...yes hindsight is a great thing but that wasn't rocket science

lfc would be kicking themselves , barely created a thing
